Permabond ET5147 Two Component Epoxy is used for structural bonding of metal, wood, and certain plastics. It has high shear, peel, and impact strength making it useable on a wide variety of substrates. Set time 40-60 min
Substitute for Loctite 2046, which has been discontinued
Permabond ET5147 meets a few regulatory specs:
1) Food Grade FDA Approved, CFR 175.105 and CFR 175.300
2) Plastics Regulation 10/2011, a sub-section of the European Framework Regulation EU 1935/2004
Caution: While this product is considered food grade, it is only suitable for applications where cured product may incidentally come into contact with food or beverage, but it is not intended to be used in a situation where it is in constant contact with food or beverage. For example, it should not be used to repair a broken coffee mug or food plate.

Product Name
- PERMABOND ET5147 Food Grade Epoxy Slow Set 40-60 min, Thixotropic Thick Gel Off White
Brief Description
- PERMABOND ET5147 is a two-part, off-white, thixotropic (non-sagging) epoxy adhesive. It is specifically formulated to be food-grade compliant with FDA CFR 175.105 and European Framework Regulation EU 1935/2004, including EU Plastics Regulation 10/2011. This adhesive offers a slow set time, allowing for repositioning, and is designed for structural bonding and sealing applications where incidental food or beverage contact may occur.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding and sealing food contact equipment and appliances.- Structural bonding of metals, composites, ceramics, wood, and certain plastics in food processing environments.- Filter bonding in the food processing industry.- Repair applications by manufacturers of food preparation, processing, and packaging equipment.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Food & Beverage Company or Distributor- General Manufacturing (for food-contact equipment)- Fabrication (of food processing and handling equipment)- Packaging Services or Contractor (for food packaging equipment)- Industrial Supply- Distributers & Resellers
Special and Unique Features
- **Food-Grade Compliance:** Formulated with FDA-approved raw materials, complying with FDA CFR 175.105 and European Framework Regulation EU 1935/2004, including EU Plastics Regulation 10/2011.- **Thixotropic, Thick Gel Consistency:** Prevents sagging during application, making it suitable for vertical or overhead bonding and gap filling.- **Slow Set Time:** Offers a pot life of 40-60 minutes, providing ample time for accurate alignment and repositioning of parts before curing.- **Versatile Curing:** Cures at room temperature, with the option to accelerate the curing process by applying heat.- **High Performance:** Exhibits excellent shock and impact resistance, high shear and peel strength, and good environmental durability.- **Chemical and Temperature Resistance:** Offers excellent resistance to water, food, cleaning fluids, and a wide temperature range.
Key Properties
- **Chemistry:** Two-part Epoxy- **Appearance:** Off-white, thixotropic paste- **Mix Ratio (by volume):** 2:1- **Pot Life @ 23°C:** 40-60 minutes- **Time to Working Strength @ 23°C:** 16 hours- **Full Cure @ 23°C:** 72 hours- **Temperature Range:** -40 to +120 °C (-40 to +250 °F)- **Maximum Gap Fill:** 2mm (0.08 in.)- **Shore D Hardness:** 70-72- **Shear Strength (mild steel):** 18-20 N/mm² (2600-2900 psi)- **Peel Strength (aluminum):** 40-70 N/25mm (9-16 PIW)
Surface Compatibility
- Metals (e.g., mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and its alloys)- Composites- Ceramics- Wood- Certain plastics
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond ET5145 (another food-grade epoxy from Permabond with a 1:1 mix ratio and 50-80 min pot life)- Permabond ET5162 (EU 10/2011 compliant food-grade epoxy)- Permabond ET5365 (approved for contact with drinking water)- Loctite 2046 (discontinued, with ET5147 serving as a substitute)- AA-BOND FDA series (e.g., FDA15, FDA26)- Other two-part epoxies with similar properties (e.g., Resinlab EP965, HB Fuller MP54420)
Comparison Note
- PERMABOND ET5147 is distinguished by its specific food-grade certification (FDA CFR 175.105 and EU regulations), making it ideal for applications requiring incidental food contact. Its thixotropic, thick gel consistency and slow set time (40-60 minutes) are key advantages for precise alignment, gap filling, and non-sag performance, setting it apart from faster-curing or lower-viscosity alternatives. Furthermore, it offers a higher temperature resistance compared to some other Permabond food-grade epoxies like ET5145.
