Permabond ET5143 is a professional-grade, two-part epoxy adhesive designed for strong, durable bonding with excellent resistance to impact and vibration. Its thick, thixotropic consistency helps the epoxy stay where you put it while filling gaps up to 2 mm (0.08 in.), making it a great choice for repair, fabrication, maintenance, and assembly work.
What makes ET5143 especially useful for food-industry applications is its FDA-compliant formulation. Permabond has specifically formulated ET5143 to meet the requirements of FDA 21 CFR 175.105, the U.S. regulation covering adhesives used as components of articles intended for packaging, transporting, or holding food.

What Does “Food Safe” Mean?
Permabond ET5143 is specifically formulated to meet FDA 21 CFR 175.105 requirements for adhesives used in food-related articles.
This does not mean that uncured ET5143 is edible or that it can automatically be used in every direct-food-contact application. FDA 175.105 governs how adhesives can be incorporated into articles used for packaging, transporting, or holding food, and the finished assembly still needs to be used in accordance with the applicable FDA conditions.
Strong Bonding Performance
ET5143 delivers excellent mechanical strength once fully cured.
| Property | Typical Performance |
|---|---|
| Mild Steel Shear Strength | 18–22 N/mm² / 2,600–3,200 psi |
| Stainless Steel Shear Strength | 12–15 N/mm² / 1,750–2,200 psi |
| Aluminum Shear Strength | 10–14 N/mm² / 1,450–2,000 psi |
| Aluminum Peel Strength | 30–50 N/25 mm / 7–11 PIW |
| Hardness | >75 Shore D |
| Maximum Gap Fill | 2 mm / 0.08 in. |
Actual bond strength will vary with substrate, joint design, gap, and surface preparation.
Easy 1:1 Mixing
ET5143 uses a convenient 1:1 mix ratio by volume, making it well suited for dual-cartridge dispensing systems and static mixing nozzles.
At approximately 23°C / 73°F:
-
Usable / Pot Life: 60–80 minutes
-
Handling Time: 3–5 hours
-
Working Strength: approximately 16 hours
-
Full Cure: approximately 72 hours
Heat can substantially accelerate the curing process. At 60°C / 140°F, Permabond lists approximately 30 minutes to working strength and 1 hour to full cure.

How to Use
-
Make sure bonding surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease.
-
For metal surfaces, clean with an appropriate solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol.
-
Some metals, including aluminum and copper alloys, may benefit from light abrasion before bonding.
-
Insert the dual cartridge into the appropriate dispenser.
-
Remove the cartridge cap and dispense a small amount until both components are flowing evenly.
-
Attach the appropriate static mixing nozzle.
-
Dispense ET5143 onto one bonding surface.
-
Assemble the parts within the 60–80 minute working time.
-
Clamp or hold the assembly for approximately 5 hours or until handling strength is reached.
-
Allow approximately 72 hours at room temperature for full cure.
These preparation and application instructions follow Permabond's current ET5143 technical datasheet.

Popular Use Cases for Permabond ET5143
Permabond ET5143 is a versatile structural epoxy designed for applications that require strong bonding, gap filling, and resistance to impact and vibration. Its thixotropic consistency helps it stay in place during assembly, while its 1:1 mix ratio makes it convenient to dispense through dual cartridges and static mixing nozzles.
Food Processing & Packaging Equipment
One of the biggest advantages of ET5143 is its FDA-compliant formulation. Permabond specifically formulated ET5143 to meet FDA 21 CFR 175.105, making it a strong option for bonding components used in food-related equipment, packaging systems, and assemblies where this adhesive regulation applies.
Typical applications can include repairing or assembling:
- Food-processing machinery components
- Packaging and filling equipment
- Conveying-system components
- Food-handling fixtures and assemblies
- Metal housings, brackets, guards, and supports used around food-production equipment
Stainless Steel & Metal Fabrication
ET5143 performs particularly well on common metals. Permabond reports typical shear strengths of 1,750–2,200 psi on stainless steel, 2,600–3,200 psi on mild steel, and 1,450–2,000 psi on aluminum.
That makes it useful for:
- Stainless-steel fabrication
- Metal brackets and mounting hardware
- Equipment housings
- Aluminum assemblies
- Metal-to-metal repairs
- Fixtures and structural components
Equipment Repair & Maintenance
Because ET5143 has good resistance to impact and vibration, it is well suited to maintenance and repair jobs where a brittle general-purpose adhesive may not be ideal.
Common examples include:
- Repairing broken machine components
- Reattaching brackets or supports
- Bonding replacement parts
- Reinforcing damaged assemblies
- Maintenance repairs on industrial equipment
Gap-Filling Repairs
ET5143 can fill gaps up to 2 mm / 0.08 in., making it helpful when mating surfaces are not perfectly flush.
This is especially useful for:
- Irregular or imperfect joints
- Worn components
- Uneven metal surfaces
- Repair work where machining a perfectly matched surface is impractical
Fabrication & Assembly
With a 60–80 minute working life, ET5143 gives users plenty of time to position, align, and clamp larger or more complicated assemblies before the adhesive begins to set.
It is a good fit for:
- Custom fabrication
- Prototype assembly
- Equipment manufacturing
- Fixture construction
- Multi-piece bonded assemblies
- Jobs requiring time for careful positioning
High-Temperature Process Applications
ET5143 can also tolerate elevated temperatures for short periods when the bonded joint is not heavily stressed. Permabond specifically notes examples such as paint-baking and wave-soldering processes.
A Versatile Choice for Tough Bonding Jobs
Overall, ET5143 is especially useful when you need a strong structural epoxy with good impact resistance, gap-filling capability, and FDA 21 CFR 175.105 compliance. It works particularly well for metal fabrication, industrial maintenance, food-related equipment assemblies, and general-purpose structural bonding where a dependable long-working-time epoxy is preferred.
