High-Strength Food-Contact Epoxy for Stainless Steel, Filters & Equipment

Permabond ET5164 is a professional-grade, two-part epoxy developed specifically for bonding stainless steel and other materials used in food-contact applications. Its balanced, lightly thixotropic consistency provides excellent flow control without becoming excessively runny, making it especially useful for stainless steel assemblies, filters, sieves, screens, and other equipment where clean, controlled adhesive application matters.

ET5164 is formulated to comply with FDA 21 CFR 175.300 and EU 10/2011 food-contact regulations, giving manufacturers, fabricators, repair technicians, and maintenance departments a dependable bonding option for applications where food-contact compliance is required.

The easy 1:1 mix ratio, long 50–70 minute working time, strong stainless steel adhesion, water and chemical resistance, and room-temperature cure make ET5164 a versatile choice for both production and repair work.

Why Choose Permabond ET5164?

  • Food-Contact Compliant – Formulated to comply with FDA 21 CFR 175.300 and EU 10/2011 food-contact regulations.

  • Excellent Stainless Steel Adhesion – Developed primarily for stainless steel bonding in food-contact applications.

  • High Structural Strength – Delivers approximately 2,465–3,335 psi shear strength on stainless steel under Permabond's specified cure conditions.

  • Easy 1:1 Mix Ratio – Straightforward dispensing from compatible dual cartridges.

  • 50–70 Minute Working Time – Gives you plenty of time to position, align, and assemble parts.

  • Excellent Flow Control – Lightly thixotropic consistency provides controlled penetration without excessive dripping or overflow.

  • Ideal for Filters & Sieves – Designed to penetrate and cover mesh effectively while maintaining controlled flow.

  • Water & Chemical Resistant – Suitable for equipment that may be exposed to water and common cleaning chemicals.

  • Room-Temperature Cure – Fully cures in approximately 24 hours at 73°F / 23°C.

  • Heat-Accelerated Cure – At 140°F / 60°C, working strength can be achieved in approximately 20 minutes and full cure in about 1 hour.

  • Clean White Appearance – Well suited for stainless steel, food equipment, and other applications where appearance matters.

  • Available in 50 mL and 400 mL Cartridges – Convenient options for repair work or higher-volume applications.

Permabond specifically highlights ET5164's stainless steel adhesion, controlled rheology, long working life, chemical and water resistance, and ability to cure either at room temperature or with heat.

What Does “Food Safe” Mean?

Permabond describes ET5164 as an FDA & EU food-safe epoxy adhesive and formulates it to comply with FDA 21 CFR 175.300 and EU 10/2011 requirements for food-contact applications.

From a practical standpoint, this means ET5164 can be considered for properly designed equipment and assemblies where the fully cured adhesive is used in food-contact environments covered by those regulations.

Typical examples include:

  • Food-processing equipment

  • Beverage-processing equipment

  • Stainless steel machinery

  • Filters and sieves

  • Screens and mesh assemblies

  • Food-handling equipment

  • Processing equipment exposed to routine washdown and cleaning

  • Components and assemblies where food-contact regulatory compliance is required

The important distinction is that food-contact compliant does not mean uncured epoxy is edible or safe to consume. ET5164 should be correctly mixed, properly applied, and allowed to fully cure before the finished assembly is placed into service.

Permabond states that ET5164 contains raw materials conforming to the applicable FDA and EU food-contact requirements and developed the adhesive specifically for food and beverage operations.

Popular Applications

Food Processing Equipment

ET5164 is an excellent choice for assembling and repairing stainless steel components used in food-processing machinery. Its food-contact compliance makes it particularly attractive when a general-purpose industrial epoxy is not appropriate.

Filters, Screens & Sieves

This is one of ET5164's standout applications. Permabond specifically designed the adhesive's flow characteristics to provide good penetration and coverage of mesh without excessive overflow.

That makes ET5164 an excellent candidate for:

  • Stainless steel filter assemblies

  • Food-processing screens

  • Sieves and strainers

  • Mesh bonding

  • Filter frame assembly

  • Industrial filtration components

Food & Beverage Manufacturing Equipment

ET5164 can be used in appropriately designed bonded assemblies throughout food and beverage production environments, including brackets, housings, fixtures, panels, filter assemblies, and other components requiring strong stainless steel adhesion.

Stainless Steel Fabrication

With excellent stainless steel adhesion and high shear strength, ET5164 provides an alternative joining method for fabricated components where welding or mechanical fastening may be undesirable.

Equipment Exposed to Cleaning Chemicals

Permabond reports great water and chemical resistance and specifically notes that ET5164 does not degrade in the presence of cleaning chemicals, making it particularly useful for equipment that undergoes routine cleaning and washdown.

Aluminum, Steel & Mixed-Material Assemblies

Although optimized for stainless steel, ET5164 can also bond mild steel, aluminum, certain plastics, ceramics, and composite materials, allowing it to handle many mixed-material equipment assemblies.

Recommended Accessories

For 50 mL ET5164 Cartridges

Maven DMA50 Manual Dispenser – 1:1 Configuration

A simple, economical manual dispenser for controlled application of 50 mL two-part adhesive cartridges. ET5164 uses a 1:1 mix ratio, so select the corresponding 1:1 DMA50 configuration.

MIXPAC MBQ 05-24L Static Mixing Nozzle

A long 24-element static mixer designed for compatible 50 mL dual cartridges. The nozzle automatically mixes the two components as ET5164 is dispensed, eliminating the need to manually measure and mix the epoxy.

For 400 mL ET5164 Cartridges

Maven MV400-36X High-Power Manual Dispenser

For higher-volume ET5164 applications, the Maven MV400-36X provides substantially more dispensing leverage than a standard manual gun. Its 36:1 mechanical thrust ratio makes it particularly useful for thicker two-part epoxies and repetitive dispensing.

MIXPAC MFQ 10-24T Static Mixing Nozzle

The MFQ 10-24T is a 24-element Quadro static mixer designed for larger 1:1 and 2:1 F-System cartridges, including 400 mL formats. Its square mixing technology provides efficient mixing while keeping the mixer relatively compact and reducing unnecessary adhesive waste.

Easy Application

For best bonding results:

  1. Make sure surfaces are clean, dry, and grease-free.

  2. Degrease surfaces with an appropriate solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol where suitable.

  3. Aluminum, copper, and similar metals may benefit from light abrasion to remove surface oxidation.

  4. Insert the cartridge into the appropriate dispenser.

  5. Remove the cartridge cap and dispense a small amount until both components are flowing evenly.

  6. Attach the appropriate static mixing nozzle.

  7. Dispense ET5164 onto one of the bonding surfaces.

  8. Assemble the parts within the usable working time.

  9. Clamp or fixture the assembly until sufficient handling strength is achieved.

  10. Allow approximately 24 hours at 73°F / 23°C for full cure, or use controlled heat to accelerate curing.
