Product Name
Permabond 240 Instant Adhesive-Slow-Set Gap Filling, Great for Plastic & Rubber
Brief Description
Permabond 240 is a high-viscosity, fast-curing, single-component ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive. It is specifically formulated for effective large gap filling and bonding porous substrates. This 100% reactive, solvent-free adhesive rapidly bonds a wide variety of materials, including plastics, rubbers, and metals, making it ideal for high-speed production environments where efficiency and strong, reliable bonds are crucial.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Rapid assembly of small parts.
- Bonding porous materials.
- Large gap filling applications (up to 0.017 inches or 0.4 mm).
- General-purpose bonding of metals, plastics, and rubbers.
- High-speed production lines.
- Electronic component assembly and wire tacking.
- Bonding rubber valve seatings, flaps for hoppers, and O-rings.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing: For rapid assembly and general-purpose bonding of various components.
- Plastic Fabrication: Excellent for bonding a wide range of plastics.
- Metal Fabrication: Suitable for bonding various metals.
- LED/Electronics: Used in electronic component assembly and wire tacking.
- Aerospace/Defense: Approved to MIL-A-46050C Type II Class 3.
- Government & Military: Due to its MIL-spec approval.
- Automotive Service/Repair: For general bonding and repair of plastic, rubber, and metal components.
- Medical Device/ Prosthetics: Relevant for electronic component assembly within devices, and general cyanoacrylate use in disposable medical devices.
Special and Unique Features
- High Viscosity: Specifically designed for large gap filling, accommodating gaps up to 0.017 inches (0.4 mm).
- Ideal for Porous Substrates: Effectively bonds porous materials.
- Rapid Strength Development: Achieves high strength quickly, with fixture times of 15-20 seconds.
- Ease of Use: Single-component adhesive requiring no mixing or heat cure.
- 100% Reactive & Solvent-Free: Environmentally conscious formulation with no solvents.
- MIL-Spec Approved: Approved to MIL-A-46050C Type II Class 3 for existing designs.
Key Properties
- Chemical Base: Ethyl Cyanoacrylate.
- Viscosity: High viscosity, typically 1200-2500 cP (mPa.s).
- Color: Clear.
- Fixture/Handling Time: 15-20 seconds (on steel, Buna N rubber, phenolic).
- Full Cure Time: 24 hours.
- Shear Strength (Steel): 21-25 N/mm² (3000-3600 psi).
- Service Temperature Range: -55°C to 82°C (-65°F to 180°F).
- Gap Fill: Up to 0.017 inches (0.4 mm).
- Cure Mechanism: Cures rapidly by reacting with trace moisture on substrate surfaces.
Surface Compatibility
Permabond 240 bonds a wide range of materials, including:
- Metals: Steel, Aluminum, Zinc.
- Plastics: ABS, PVC, Polycarbonate (PC), Phenolic materials.
- Rubbers: Buna N Rubber, and other general rubbers.
For difficult-to-bond plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, or silicone, the use of Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is recommended for optimal adhesion.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other Permabond Cyanoacrylates: Depending on specific needs, other Permabond grades can serve as alternatives. Examples include Permabond 101 (low viscosity, wicking), Permabond 102 (medium viscosity, general purpose), Permabond 105 (for difficult plastics/rubbers), Permabond 2050 (flexible, high viscosity gel), Permabond 910 (methyl cyanoacrylate, good for metals), and toughened grades like Permabond 731, 735, or 737 for enhanced impact and peel strength.
- General Cyanoacrylate Adhesives: Similar instant adhesives from other manufacturers (e.g., Loctite, Devcon, 3M, Maven Adhesives) may offer comparable performance for certain applications.
Comparison Note
Permabond 240 is an ethyl cyanoacrylate, which typically provides stronger bonds on most plastics and rubbers compared to methyl cyanoacrylate grades. Its high viscosity and significant gap-filling capability (up to 0.017 inches) set it apart from lower viscosity instant adhesives, making it particularly suitable for applications with larger bond line gaps or porous materials. While classified as an "instant adhesive," its "slow-set" characteristic (15-20 seconds fixture time) offers a slight advantage for component alignment in more demanding assembly tasks compared to ultra-fast setting CAs.
