Product Name
Huntsman Araldite 2022-1 Toughened 10-15-min Acrylate MMA Multi-Use Formula
Brief Description
Araldite 2022-1 is a two-component, room-temperature curing, methacrylate (MMA) adhesive system designed for rapid assembly operations across a wide variety of substrates. It is a toughened, multi-purpose adhesive known for its excellent impact resistance, good resistance to heat, water, and chemicals, and its ability to bond effectively even with minimal surface preparation.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding of thermoplastics, composites (GRP, SMC, GRE, thermosets), and metals (ferrous metals, aluminum, copper).- Assembly of ABS, PVC, acrylics, and polycarbonates.- Adhering polyamides, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam, various rubbers, glass, quartz, gemstones, and ceramic materials.- Used in field work and production lines for structural bonding.- Ideal for applications requiring high impact resistance and fast curing.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense: For bonding composites and metals in demanding applications.- Automotive Service/Repair: For bonding various plastics and metals in vehicle components.- Fabrication: General bonding of diverse materials.- General Manufacturing: Multi-purpose adhesive for various production needs.- Marine: For bonding hulls, deck liners, internal fixtures, and composite parts in boats and yachts.- Metal Fabrication: Bonding ferrous metals, aluminum, and copper.- Plastic Fabrication: Excellent for bonding a wide range of thermoplastics and composites.- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle: Used for truck and construction equipment components like side panels, roof panels, and aerodynamic parts.
Special and Unique Features
- **Toughened Formula:** Provides high impact and peel strength, making bonds resilient to dynamic loads, vibrations, and shock.- **Fast Curing:** Offers an excellent ratio of working time to cure time, allowing for rapid assembly operations with a working time of 10-12 minutes and initial strength in about 18 minutes.- **Multi-Purpose & Versatile:** Bonds a wide range of similar and dissimilar substrates, including metals, plastics, and composites.- **Tolerant to Pretreatment:** Can be used effectively with minimal surface preparation, though degreasing is recommended for optimal results.- **Gap Filling:** Capable of filling gaps up to 4mm (0.157 inches).- **Chemical and Environmental Resistance:** Good resistance to heat, water, chemicals, gasoline, and oils.
Key Properties
- **Chemical Base:** Methyl Methacrylate (MMA).- **Components:** Two-component system.- **Cure Type:** Room temperature curing.- **Color:** Beige, off-white, or pale yellow.- **Mixing Ratio (by volume):** 1:1.- **Working Time (Pot Life):** Approximately 10-12 minutes at 23°C.- **Minimum Curing Time for Initial Strength:** 18 minutes for 1 N/mm² on aluminum at 23°C; 28 minutes for >10 MPa lap shear strength.- **Viscosity:** 60,000 mPa.s (thixotropic).- **Gap Filling Capacity:** Up to 4mm.- **Temperature Resistance:** -60°C to 100°C.- **Shear Strength:** Up to 25 N/mm² (on aluminum).- **Peel Strength:** 4 N/mm² (on aluminum).- **Tensile Strength:** 45 MPa.
Surface Compatibility
- **Plastics:** GRP, SMC, GRE, thermoset composites, ABS, PVC, acrylics, polycarbonate, polyamides, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam.- **Metals:** Ferrous metals, aluminum, copper, steel, stainless steel.- **Other Materials:** Various rubbers, glass, quartz, gemstones, ceramic materials. For optimal bonding, surfaces should be cleaned with a degreasing agent like acetone or iso-propanol. Mechanical abrading or chemical etching can further enhance bond strength and durability.
Known backups / known substitutes
Please note that Araldite 2022-1 in 50ml cartridges has been discontinued by Huntsman Advanced Materials, though other pack sizes (e.g., 380ml) or component forms (resin F 362-1 and hardener F 362-1) may still be available.- **Plexus MMA Adhesives:** Such as Plexus MA300, MA310, MA320, MA550, MA560-1, MA8210, MA205HV, which are also two-part methacrylate adhesives known for structural bonding of thermoplastics, metals, and composites with minimal surface preparation.- **Infinity Bond MMA Adhesives:** For example, Infinity Bond MMA 310, formulated for difficult substrates like metals, plastics, and fiberglass, offering strong bonds with little to no surface preparation.- **Other MMA Adhesives:** From brands like ASI, LOCTITE (Acrylics), and SCIGRIP.- **Epoxy Adhesives:** While generally having longer cure times and sometimes requiring more surface preparation, epoxies like JB Weld can be considered for high shear and tensile strength applications, especially where less flexibility is acceptable.
Comparison Note
Huntsman Araldite 2022-1 stands out as a toughened MMA adhesive offering a balance of fast cure, high impact resistance, and broad material compatibility, particularly excelling in bonding thermoplastics and dissimilar substrates with minimal surface preparation. Compared to traditional epoxies, MMA adhesives like Araldite 2022-1 generally offer faster cure times, better flexibility, and superior impact and peel strength, making them ideal for dynamic applications and production environments where speed and resilience are critical.
