Permabond 801 Cyanoacrylate Super Glue Instant Adhesive is a low viscosity modified ethyl cyanoacrylate suitable for applications where high temperature resistance is required. This material is fast setting and has good adhesion to rubber, metal and plastics. It is also a thin/low viscosity formula so works well in tight-fitting parts and surfaces. Surfaces should be clean, dry and grease-free before applying the adhesive. Use a suitable solvent (such as acetone or isopropanol) for the degreasing of surfaces. Some metals such as aluminium, copper and its alloys will benefit from light abrasion with emery cloth (or similar), to remove the oxide layer.
Product Name
Permabond 801 Instant Adhesive-Fast-Set Temperature-Resistant Thin General Purpose
Brief Description
Permabond 801 is a low viscosity, fast-setting, modified ethyl cyanoacrylate (CA) instant adhesive. It is specifically formulated for applications that require high-temperature resistance. This single-component adhesive polymerizes rapidly when pressed into a thin film between parts, initiated by surface moisture, forming strong bonds quickly on a variety of materials. Its properties make it particularly suitable for high-speed production lines.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding a wide range of materials including rubber, metals, and plastics.
- Applications requiring resistance to elevated temperatures.
- Ideal for high-speed production and assembly lines due to its rapid curing.
- Wicking into pre-assembled components or for bonding close-fitting parts due to its low viscosity.
- Speaker bonding.
- Electric motor tacking and bonding.
- Moisture-resistant encapsulation for Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing
- Metal Fabrication
- LED/Electronics
- Plastic Fabrication
- Automotive Service/Repair
- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
- Distributers & Resellers
- Industrial Supply
Special and Unique Features
- **High Temperature Resistance:** Engineered to perform in applications exposed to elevated temperatures.
- **Rapid Curing:** Achieves handling strength in seconds, facilitating fast assembly processes.
- **Low Viscosity:** A thin, wicking-grade formula that penetrates small gaps effectively.
- **Single Component:** Requires no mixing, simplifying application and reducing waste.
- **100% Reactive:** Contains no solvents, ensuring a solid bond with minimal shrinkage.
- **Moisture Cured:** Curing is initiated by moisture adsorbed on the surface of the parts.
Key Properties
- **Chemical Composition:** Modified Ethyl Cyanoacrylate
- **Appearance:** Colourless / Clear / Transparent Liquid
- **Viscosity @ 25°C:** 10-15 mPa.s (cP)
- **Specific Gravity:** 1.1
- **Maximum Gap Fill:** 0.05 mm (0.002 in)
- **Fixture/Handling Time:** 10-15 seconds (on Steel, Buna N Rubber, Phenolic)
- **Full Strength:** 24 hours
- **High Temperature Resistance:** Up to 82°C (180°F) continuous, with brief excursions up to 204°C (400°F) for processes like paint baking or wave soldering.
- **Low Temperature Resistance:** -55°C (-65°F)
- **Shear Strength (Steel):** 19-23 N/mm² (2800-3300 psi)
- **Hardness (ISO868):** 85 Shore D
- **Dielectric Strength:** 25kV/mm
- **Chemical Resistance:** Good resistance to water, ethanol, and gasoline. Not recommended for continuous contact with strong oxidizing materials and polar solvents, though it will withstand a solvent wash.
Surface Compatibility
- **Excellent Adhesion To:** Rubber (e.g., Buna N), Metals (e.g., Steel, Aluminum, Copper alloys), and Plastics (e.g., ABS, PVC, Polycarbonate, Phenolic).
- **Porous Surfaces:** Can be bonded effectively, often benefiting from the use of a Permabond activator.
- **Difficult-to-Bond Plastics:** For low surface energy plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, or silicone, pre-treatment with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is recommended.
- **Surface Preparation:** Surfaces should be clean, dry, and grease-free. Light abrasion may be beneficial for some metals.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Permabond 802:** A close substitute within the Permabond range.
- **Other Permabond Cyanoacrylates:** Such as Permabond 101, 105, 240, or 920, which offer varying viscosities or specific substrate compatibilities.
- **Adhesive Systems (ASI) HT100:** Identified as a close substitute.
- **General Cyanoacrylate Adhesives:** From other manufacturers like 3M (e.g., 3M CA3, 3M CA8).
Comparison Note
Permabond 801 distinguishes itself as a low-viscosity, fast-setting ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive specifically engineered to provide robust bonds in applications demanding high-temperature resistance. While many instant adhesives offer rapid curing, 801's combination of thinness (allowing for wicking into tight assemblies) and its enhanced thermal performance sets it apart. This makes it a preferred choice for manufacturers seeking efficiency and durability in challenging environments, particularly where traditional cyanoacrylates might fall short on heat resistance. Its ability to bond a diverse range of common industrial materials further solidifies its position as a versatile general-purpose adhesive with a specialized edge.
