Permabond 4C40 Instant Adhesive intermediate high_ viscosity, high purity, medical device grade, cyanoacrylate adhesive
Brief Description
Permabond 4C40 is a one-component, medium-high viscosity, medical device grade cyanoacrylate adhesive. It is specifically formulated for large gap fill applications and provides faster set times and improved gap-filling capabilities compared to conventional cyanoacrylates. This adhesive forms strong bonds extremely quickly, curing rapidly at room temperature via polymerization with moisture. It undergoes rigorous purification and testing to meet ISO 10993 standards for biocompatibility and passes USP Class VI and Cytotoxicity requirements.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding a wide range of medical device materials, including metals, rubber, and plastics.- Ideal for high-speed production lines due to its fast curing properties.- Assembly of disposable medical devices such as catheters, syringes, and IV sets.- Securing delicate components like sensors and intricate electronic parts within medical devices.- Creating microfluidic channels in diagnostic devices.- Sealing components within medical devices to prevent leaks and ensure sterility.- Repairing small defects or imperfections in medical device components.- Bonding rubber bumpers and tube caps on wheelchairs.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Medical Device/ Prosthetics: Extensively used for bonding and assembly in the medical device industry due to its medical-grade formulation and biocompatibility.- General Manufacturing: Utilized in manufacturing processes requiring fast, strong, and reliable bonding, especially on high-speed production lines.- LED/Electronics: Applied in the assembly of electronic components within wearable and other medical devices.- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle: Used in applications such as bonding components for wheelchairs.
Special and Unique Features
- Medical device grade formula, ensuring high purity and suitability for sensitive applications.- Biocompatible, meeting stringent ISO 10993 standards and USP Class VI requirements.- Fast curing and instant setting, significantly accelerating assembly processes.- Excellent gap-filling capabilities due to its medium-high viscosity, suitable for large gaps.- Versatile and general purpose, capable of bonding a wide array of substrates.- Cures at room temperature, minimizing heat impact on sensitive components.- Capable of microscopic bonding, ideal for intricate device designs.- Effectively bonds difficult-to-bond plastics, such as polyacetals, and can be used on passivated metal surfaces.- Withstands solvent washes without compromising bond strength.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Ethyl cyanoacrylate.- Appearance: Colourless / Clear / Transparent liquid.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 1200-2400 mPa.s (cP) (intermediate high / medium-high).- Specific Gravity: 1.05 - 1.1.- Cure Method: Moisture / Condensation Cure.- Fixture/Handling Strength Time: 0.08 to 0.83 minutes (seconds).- Shear Strength (on mild steel): 1,800 psi.- Impact Strength: 4 to 9.5 Nm.- Temperature Resistance: -55°C (-65°F) to 83°C (can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods like paint baking and wave soldering).- Hardness: Shore D 85.- Elongation: <5%.- Solubility: Insoluble in water (hardens on contact), miscible with organic solvents.
Surface Compatibility
- Metals: Bonds well to various metals, including aluminum and steel.- Plastics: Compatible with a wide range of plastics, such as phenolic, polyethylene (LDPE, HDPE), and polyacetals.- Rubbers/Elastomers: Forms strong bonds with different types of rubber and elastomers.- Ceramics: Suitable for bonding ceramic materials.- Fabrics: Can also bond some fabric materials.- Surface Preparation: Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of grease. Light abrasion may benefit some metals like aluminum and copper to remove oxide layers.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond 4C30: A similar single-component, medical device grade cyanoacrylate adhesive.- Permabond 200: A high viscosity cyanoacrylate adhesive.- Permabond 265: Offers faster set times and improved gap-filling capabilities compared to conventional cyanoacrylates.- Other medical-grade cyanoacrylates: Various brands like 3M, Dymax, Aron Alpha, and Loctite offer medical-grade cyanoacrylate alternatives.- Structural adhesives: While Permabond 4C40 is a structural adhesive, other types like urethane, acrylic, and epoxy can be considered for certain load-bearing applications.
Comparison Note
- Permabond 4C40 offers faster set times and improved gap-filling capabilities compared to many conventional cyanoacrylates.- Unlike standard superglues, this product undergoes rigorous purification and testing to meet ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards, making it specifically suitable for medical device applications.- Its instant cure time significantly accelerates assembly lines, providing a faster and often more efficient alternative to traditional fastening methods such as welding or solvent bonding.- The adhesive cures at room temperature, which is a critical advantage for bonding heat-sensitive components, unlike some bonding techniques that require elevated temperatures.
