PERMABOND 4C20 is an intermediate viscosity, medical device grade, cyanoacrylate that is used to bond through intermediate gaps. It is fast setting and suitable for use on plastics, rubber and metals.
Cyanoacrylate adhesives are single component adhesives that polymerize rapidly when pressed into a thin film between parts. The moisture adsorbed on the surface initiates the curing of the adhesive. Strong bonds are developed extremely fast and on a great variety of materials. These properties make PERMABOND cyanoacrylates the ideal adhesives for high speed production lines.

Brief Description
Permabond 4C20 is an intermediate viscosity, high purity, medical device grade, ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive. It is a fast-setting, single-component adhesive that polymerizes rapidly when pressed into a thin film between parts, initiated by moisture adsorbed on the surface. This adhesive is specifically formulated for bonding various materials in medical device manufacturing and is suitable for high-speed production lines.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding medical devices.- High-speed production lines for increased productivity.- Assembly of single-use medical items such as catheters, respiratory and anesthesia masks, syringes, needles, and cannulas.- Bonding or coating interior joints and exterior surfaces of medical devices.- Used in life-saving equipment, including resuscitation tubes, respirators, and blood filters.- Ideal for bonding a wide range of plastics, rubber, and metals commonly found in the medical device industry.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Medical Device/ Prosthetics
Special and Unique Features
- Medical device grade, meeting USP Class VI and Cytotoxicity requirements.- Fast-setting properties.- Intermediate viscosity, allowing for some gap-filling capability up to 0.25 mm.- Ideal for automated dispensing systems.- Withstands EtO (Ethylene Oxide) sterilization.- High purity formulation.- Colourless appearance.- Single-component adhesive for ease of use.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Ethyl cyanoacrylate.- Appearance: Colourless liquid.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 400-600 mPa.s (cP).- Maximum gap fill: 0.25 mm (0.008 in).- Fixture/handling time (0.3 N/mm² shear strength): 10 seconds (Steel, Buna N Rubber, Phenolic).- Full strength: 24 hours.- Shear strength (Steel): 20-22 N/mm² (2900-3200 psi).- Hardness (ISO868): 85 Shore D.- Service temperature range: -55°C to 80°C (-65°F to 176°F).- Specific gravity: 1.1.- Flash point: 83°C.- Dielectric strength: 25 kV/mm (250 V/mil).
Surface Compatibility
- Plastics- Rubber (e.g., Buna N Rubber)- Metals (e.g., Steel)- Phenolic
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond C Surface Activator (CSA) or Permabond QFS 16 can be used to accelerate cure speed on larger gaps or acidic surfaces.- Other Permabond medical device grade cyanoacrylates, such as Permabond 4C10, 4C30, and 4C40, which may offer different viscosities.- Competitor products like Cyberbond Apollo 2241-05 and Cyberbond Apollo 2000.- Other Permabond cyanoacrylates with specific features, such as Permabond 940 (low odor) or Permabond 820 (high temperature resistant).- General medical-grade cyanoacrylates from other manufacturers (e.g., Infinity Bond, Incure Cyro-Weld series).- Other types of medical-grade adhesives, including silicones, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or structural adhesives (e.g., urethane, acrylic, epoxy), depending on specific application requirements.
Comparison Note
Permabond 4C20 is characterized by its intermediate viscosity within the Permabond 4C series, differentiating it from lower (e.g., 4C10) or higher (e.g., 4C30, 4C40) viscosity variants. As a medical-grade cyanoacrylate, it undergoes stringent purification, precise formulation, and rigorous testing to meet biocompatibility standards like ISO 10993 and USP Class VI, which is a critical distinction from general-purpose consumer super glues. Its fast bonding and high strength make it particularly well-suited for high-speed production lines in medical device assembly. Unlike some surgical cyanoacrylates (e.g., 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate like Dermabond) used for direct tissue repair, Permabond 4C20 (an ethyl cyanoacrylate) is primarily designed for bonding components within medical devices.
