LORD Chemlok 7701 adhesion enhancer/surface modifier is a solvent-based surface treatment used to Prepare a variety of Natural Rubbers, Vulcanized Rubbers and Synthetic Rubbers for bonding.  LORD 7701 chemically alters the surface of the rubber, making it more receptive to bonding. WARNING: Do not apply to metal surfaces, only apply to rubber surfaces.

Lord 7701 can be used with a broad range of adhesives, including Epoxies, Urethanes, Polyurethanes and MMA's (Acrylics).  As long as you're bonding some form of Natural, Vulcanized or Synthetic rubber (both to itself or other surfaces), the Lord 7701 will likely enable your bond to be successful.

Lord 7701 is specified with National Stock Number (NSN) 8040-01-151-4258

Compatible Materials:

It works with a variety of cured and thermoset materials, including natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene, SBR, butyl, polybutadiene, neoprene, EPDM, nitrile, polyurethane, styrene-butadiene block copolymers, styrene isoprene rubbers and polyvinyl chloride.

Lord 7701 is similar to another primer, the Lord 459X, but they work with different rubbers. Below is a comparison between LORD 459X and LORD 7701, both of which are adhesion enhancers/primers for improving bonding to hard to bond surfaces, but they differ significantly in chemistry, usage, and compatibility.

Which Should You Use?

  • Choose LORD 7701 if you're bonding:

    • Rubbers, either natural, vulcanized or synthetic (EPDM, NBR, NR, etc.)

    • Soft Flexible forms of PVC (often used on flooring)\
  • Choose LORD 459X if you're bonding:
    • Thermoplastic Elastomers (rubber-like plastics).  Polyolefins (Low Surface Energy / Hard-to-bond Plastics)

    • Examples include:

TPE Type Description Typical Use
TPE-S (Styrenic block copolymers) Easy to process, low cost Grips, soft-touch handles
TPE-O (Olefinic TPEs) Good for automotive, lightweight Car interiors, bumpers
TPE-U (Thermoplastic polyurethanes - TPU) High abrasion & tear resistance Sporting goods, cables, seals
TPE-V (Vulcanizates) More rubber-like, heat-resistant Under-the-hood car parts
TPE-E (Thermoplastic copolyester) Excellent fatigue and chemical resistance Automotive belts, gears

  • Choose Either One Lord 458X or Lord 7701 if you're bonding:
    • Soft rubbery plastics (Thermoplatic Elastomers (TPEs))
    • Examples are Vulcanized Plastics (plastic-rubber blends)
    • TPO / TPE-O Thermoplastic Polyolefins (blended PO's with rubbers)
    • TPU / TPE-U (rubbers blended with polyurethanes)

Feature LORD 459X LORD 7701
Type Surface treatment primer Surface treatment primer
Primary Use Case Improves bonding to:
  • Polyolefins (Low Surface Energy / Hard-to-bond Plastics)

  • Examples include Nylons (PA's), Polyethylenes (PE, HDPE, LDPE, UHMW, LLDPE), Polypropylenes (PP, PPCO, PPHO, COPP, HOPP)

Improves bonding to:
  • Natural Rubbers

  • Vulcanized Rubbers

  • Synthetic Rubbers (EPDM, NBR, NR, etc.)

  • Soft Flexible forms of PVC (often used on flooring)
And both work with:
  • Soft rubbery plastics (Thermoplatic Elastomers (TPEs))
  • Examples are Vulcanized Plastics (plastic-rubber blends)
  • TPO / TPE-O Thermoplastic Polyolefins (blended PO's with rubbers)
  • TPU / TPE-U (rubbers blended with polyurethanes)
  • Soft rubbery plastics (Thermoplatic Elastomers (TPEs))
  • Examples are Vulcanized Plastics (plastic-rubber blends)
  • TPO / TPE-O Thermoplastic Polyolefins (blended PO's with rubbers)
  • TPU / TPE-U (rubbers blended with polyurethanes)

LORD 7701 adhesion enhancer/surface modifier is used in conjunction with a broad range of LORD adhesives, including epoxy and urethane adhesives, for bonding cured rubber. It improves adhesion to a variety of cured and thermoplastic polymeric materials, including natural rubber, synthetic polyisoprene, SBR, butyl, polybutadiene, neoprene, EPDM, nitrile, polyurethane, styrene-butadiene block copolymers, styrene isoprene rubbers and polyvinyl chloride.

Shelf Life
Shelf life is six months from date of shipment when stored at 21-27°C (70-80°F) in original, unopened container.
Avoid storage in lit areas. Store only in original container or UV-filtering plastic or glass container. Do not store in metal containers. Store LORD 7701 surface treatment in a cool, dark area away from oil, grease, sawdust, floor sweepings, easily oxidized organic compounds, ammonia, amines, ammonia salts, and metallic materials. Do not pollute with water or alcohol. In the event of a spill, use large quantities of water to flush the area.

Features and Benefits

  • Works with various most natrual, vulcanized, and synthetic rubbers, as well as some thermoplastic polymeric materials like soft stretchy/flexible plastics like Flexible PVC
  • Versatile – functions as a cleaner and surface conditioner; treats a wide variety of elastomer functional materials.
  • Easy to Apply – applies easily by wipe, brush, dip or flood methods.
  • Convenient – requires no mixing.
  • Improved Adhesion – improves adhesion to cast urethanes and cured rubber.
  • Fast Drying – adhesion enhancer/surface modifier flashes off within five minutes or less.
  • Environmentally Resistant – promotes increased environmental resistance by allowing the treated surface to be more easily wet.

Storage

Store LORD Adhesion Enhancers/Surface Modifiers should in theiroriginal containers. When transferringto another container, only transfer the amount needed for the application. Do not return unused material to the original container as this will cause pollution. LORD 7701 cannotbe stored in metal containers orbe used with metal acid brushes as this will cause the material to precipitate white particles. Keep all
LORD adhesion enhancers/surface modifiers (except LORD 459T or 459X) in a cool, dark and dry area.
