Why Use MA590 for Large Marine Installations?
Many structural MMA adhesives cure relatively quickly. That can become difficult when installing or positioning large marine components because installers may need considerable time to apply adhesive across the complete bonding area before final assembly.
Plexus MA590 provides 90–105 minutes of working time at 74°F (23°C), allowing considerably more time for adhesive application and component positioning. The product was developed specifically with large marine structures in mind and is commonly used for bonding fiberglass boat stringers and liners.
This makes MA590 particularly attractive for installation jobs where working time and positioning flexibility are more important than extremely fast fixture time.

Application Notes
For maximum bond performance, apply enough adhesive to completely fill the joint when the parts are assembled. Adhesive dispensing, component positioning, and fixturing should all be completed before the 90–105 minute working time expires.
Once positioned, the assembly should remain undisturbed until the specified fixture time has been reached. Application temperatures between approximately 65°F and 85°F (18°C–30°C) are recommended for consistent curing performance.
Chemical Resistance
MA590 offers excellent resistance to:
-
Hydrocarbons
-
Salt solutions
-
Acids and bases between approximately pH 3–10
The adhesive is more susceptible to:
-
Polar solvents
-
Strong acids
-
Strong bases
Safety & Handling
Plexus MA590 is a flammable methacrylate adhesive. Use only with adequate ventilation and keep the product away from heat, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. Wear appropriate gloves and eye protection during handling and application.
The supplied SDS identifies the adhesive for transportation as UN1133, Adhesives, Class 3, Packing Group II.

Popular Use Cases for Plexus MA590
Plexus® MA590 is designed for demanding structural bonding applications where long working time, high toughness, and strong gap-filling capability are important. Its 90–105 minute working time makes it especially useful for large assemblies that require extra time for adhesive placement, alignment, and fixturing.
Seakeeper Ride Installations
MA590 is well suited for marine installation projects where installers need plenty of time to dispense adhesive, position components, and complete assembly before the adhesive begins to set. Its non-sagging consistency and ability to fill gaps up to 1.5 inches make it useful when bonding large or irregular mating surfaces.
Fiberglass Boat Construction
One of MA590's primary intended applications is the structural assembly of large fiberglass boats. Plexus specifically identifies it for bonding stringers and liners into large fiberglass vessels, making it a strong choice for boat builders and marine manufacturers.
Stringer & Liner Bonding
MA590 can be used to create durable structural bonds between fiberglass stringers, liners, hull components, and other composite structures. Its combination of impact resistance, fatigue endurance, and toughness helps accommodate the vibration and repeated loading commonly encountered in marine applications.
FRP & Composite Assembly
The adhesive is recommended for bonding materials including FRP, gelcoat, polyester composites, DCPD-modified polyester, and vinyl ester. This makes it useful for assembling fiberglass panels, molded composite components, structural reinforcements, and other large composite parts.
Large Structural Bonding Projects
With a working time of up to approximately 105 minutes, MA590 is especially useful when a large bonding area would be difficult to complete with a fast-setting adhesive. Installers have more time to apply adhesive across the joint and accurately position large components before cure begins.
Thick & Irregular Bond Lines
MA590 fills gaps ranging from approximately 0.03" to 1.50", making it useful for assemblies where surfaces do not fit together perfectly or where substantial adhesive thickness is required.
Metal-to-Composite Bonding
MA590 can also bond aluminum and stainless steel to compatible composite or plastic substrates. Plexus recommends primer for these metals where appropriate, particularly for demanding exterior applications.
Thermoplastic Assembly
In addition to marine composites, MA590 is recommended for several thermoplastics, including ABS, acrylic, PVC, styrenics, and urethanes, making it useful for mixed-material assemblies and fabricated plastic components.
Overall, Plexus MA590 is particularly valuable for large marine and composite assemblies where installers need extended working time without sacrificing structural strength, impact resistance, or bond-line flexibility.
