PLEXUS MA2290 - 50 Gallon Pail Adhesive
Brief Description
PLEXUS MA2290 is a two-part methacrylate adhesive engineered for the structural bonding of thermoplastic, metal, and composite assemblies. It is known for its excellent fatigue endurance, outstanding impact resistance, and superior toughness, often requiring minimal surface preparation.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Composite bonding in marine and transportation industries.- Bonding of composite stringers, liners, and deck to hull in marine applications.- Manufacturing of wind blades, turbine housing assemblies, and lightning suppression systems in the wind energy sector.- Bonding floating floors and modular washrooms in railway carriages.- Bonding composite body panels on buses and coaches, as well as doors, headlamp surrounds, and front grills for trucks.- General structural bonding in manufacturing processes.- Filling gaps ranging from 0.03 inches to 1.5 inches.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Marine- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle (including rail, bus, coach, truck manufacturing)- General Manufacturing- Aerospace/Defense- Construction/Building Services- Countertop Fabrication- Cladding (Facade/Cladding)- Wind Energy- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication
Special and Unique Features
- Two-part methacrylate adhesive system.- Features a 10:1 mix ratio.- Requires virtually no surface preparation for many substrates.- Provides excellent fatigue endurance.- Offers outstanding impact resistance.- Delivers superior toughness.- Exhibits lower exotherm and shrinkage compared to similar acrylic adhesives, mitigating read-through/printing.- Highly thixotropic, allowing for the dispensing of large, non-sag beads.- Incorporates low shrink technology.- Available in blue or black colors.- Capable of filling significant gaps from 0.03 inches to 1.5 inches.
Key Properties
- Color: Off-White (Part A), Blue/Black (Activator)- Mix Ratio (by Volume): 10:1- Working Time: 80 – 110 minutes- Fixture Time: 170 – 215 minutes (to reach approx. 500 and 1000 psi respectively)- Shear Strength: 1,700-2,300 psi (11.7 – 15.8 MPa)- Tensile Strength: 2,200 – 3,100 psi (15.2 – 21.2 MPa)- Tensile Elongation: 40 – 100 %- Operating Temperature: -40°F – 180°F (-40°C – 82°C)- Gap Tolerance: 0.03 - 1.5 inches (0.75 - 38 mm)- Resistance: Excellent to hydrocarbons, acids and bases (pH 3-10), salt solutions.- Susceptibility: Polar solvents, strong acids and bases.- Flash Point: 51°F (11°C)
Surface Compatibility
- Composites: DCPD, FRP, Gelcoat, Phenolics, Epoxy Based Composites, RIM- Thermoplastics: ABS/ABS Blends, Acrylics, PBT, Polycarbonate, Rigid PVC, TPUs- Coated Metals: Powder coated or E-coated Metals- Raw Metals: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Raw Steel (PC120 primer recommended for optimal adhesion on aluminum/steel, though often primerless)
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other Plexus methacrylate adhesives such as MA8105 (strong, low odor multi-material bonder), MA8110 (specialty for galvanized/coated metals), MA830 (high-speed production), MA310 (longer open time), MA320, MA330, MA920, and MA2045, depending on specific application requirements like cure speed, odor, or material focus.- General two-component (2K) structural adhesives including other epoxies, urethanes, or methacrylates from various manufacturers.
Comparison Note
PLEXUS MA2290 is a distinct two-part methacrylate adhesive characterized by its extended working time of 80-110 minutes, which is beneficial for applications requiring longer assembly or positioning periods. It stands out for its ability to fill substantial gaps (up to 1.5 inches) and its high strength, toughness, and impact resistance, often achieved without the need for extensive surface preparation, differentiating it from many other structural adhesives that may have shorter working times or require primers.
