Product Name
Permabond UV6160 UV glue with High Optical Clarity, Very Clear, Transparent, thicker slow flow
Brief Description
Permabond UV6160 is a single-part, fast-setting methacrylate ester adhesive that cures rapidly upon exposure to UV light. It has been specifically formulated to provide excellent optical clarity and enhanced transparency, even when used in thick layers, in compression, or in heavily loaded joints.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Glass bonding (glass to glass, glass to metal)- Architectural glasswork, including glass balconies, staircases, shower doors, and handles.- Glass furniture, such as display cases, tabletops, decorative panels, and shelving.- Plastic bonding for items like point-of-sale display items and signs.- Flat panel displays, touch screens, and lamination in devices like phones, tablets, LCD screens, OLED/LED displays, curved/flexible screens, and AR/VR displays.- Optical equipment, including cameras, telescopes, lenses, fiber optics, and camera modules.- Medical disposable equipment, such as catheters, syringes, facemasks, breathing circuits, endoscopes, and diagnostic tools.- Automotive applications for bonding mirrors, headlights, interior trims, and sensor housings.- Jewelry and crafts, including resin jewelry and miniature models.- Bonding components like resistors to circuit boards.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense (for internal cabin elements and weight reduction)- Artist, Artisan (for jewelry, crafts, and art glass)- Automotive Service/Repair (for automotive assembly)- Construction/Building Services (for architectural bonding and glasswork)- Distributers & Resellers (as a product sold through distribution channels)- Electrical Services or Products (for bonding components on circuit boards)- Fabrication (for glass, plastic, and metal fabrication)- Furniture (for glass furniture and display units)- General Manufacturing (due to its fast cure and precision)- LED/Electronics (for displays, touchscreens, optical components, and circuit boards)- Medical Device/Prosthetics (for disposable medical equipment and devices)- Plastic Fabrication (for plastic bonding and display items)- Sign & Display (for point-of-sale displays and signs)
Special and Unique Features
- Cures on demand with UV light.- Offers high optical clarity and enhanced transparency, even in thick layers or heavily loaded joints.- Provides good resistance against sunlight yellowing.- Is 100% solids, containing no solvents.- Achieves fast curing with low-power lamps.- Maintains optical clarity even under very high stress.- Can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods (e.g., paint baking, wave soldering processes) provided the joint is not unduly stressed.- Forms a colorless, clear bond.- Exhibits moisture resistance.- Creates an “invisible” adhesive joint.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Methacrylate ester.- Appearance: Colourless, clear.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 1,000-2,000 mPa.s (cP).- Specific gravity: 1.1.- Typical fixture time: <10 seconds (low power 4mW/cm² battery lamp), 2 seconds (LED 100mW/cm² lamp), 1 second (UV light guide 30W/cm²).- Cure wavelength: 365-400 nm.- Shear strength (Glass to steel): 11 N/mm² (1600 psi) at 23°C, 18 N/mm² (2600 psi) at 80°C, 16 N/mm² (2300 psi) after 8 weeks sunlamp exposure.- Tensile strength (ISO37): 15 - 25 N/mm².- Elongation (ISO37): 100 - 150%.- Hardness (ISO868): 65-75 Shore D.- Refractive index (cured): >1.490.- Dielectric strength: 12 KV/mm.- Dielectric constant 1MHz@25°C: 4.- Water absorption (ISO62) 2 hours in boiling water: <2%.- Maximum gap fill: 1.5 mm.- Minimum temperature for cured adhesive: -55°C (-67°F).
Surface Compatibility
- Glass (to glass, glass to metal, glass to acrylic).- Plastics (e.g., acrylic, polycarbonate).- Metals (e.g., steel, aluminium, copper, and its alloys), often benefiting from light abrasion to remove oxide layers.- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and grease-free before application.- Special care should be taken to remove silicone-based cleaning agents from glass.- Isopropanol can be used to degrease most surfaces.- Not recommended for use in contact with strong oxidizing materials.- For thermoplastic surfaces, compatibility tests are recommended to ensure bond strength is not affected by mold release agents.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond UV7141 (UV and anaerobic curing, for ceramic coated glass, mirrors, glass, and metal).- Permabond UV610 (provides structural strength on steel to glass).- Permabond UV620 (known for optical clarity).- Permabond UV625 (thixotropic gel, ideal for vertical surfaces and large gaps).- Permabond UV670 (flexible to absorb stress between glass and metal).- Permabond UV632 (ideal for bonding acrylic).- Dymax 429 Lightweld Adhesive (for glass bonding).- Dymax 425 UV Light Cure Adhesive (for architectural bonding).- Dymax Adhesives 9701, Dymax Adhesives 110-MSK UV Light Cure Adhesive (for flat panel displays).- MG Chemicals UV adhesives (general UV adhesives).- 3M Scotch-Weld (general adhesives).- Loctite (general adhesives).- Permatex (adhesives for the automotive industry).- Pacer Technology (Super Glue Corporation).
Comparison Note
Permabond UV6160 is particularly noted for its exceptional optical clarity and transparency, maintaining these properties even in thick layers or under high stress, and its resistance to yellowing. It offers a fast, on-demand cure with UV light, making it highly suitable for high-throughput applications where aesthetics and invisible bonds are critical. While other UV adhesives exist for specialized purposes (e.g., higher flexibility, thixotropic properties, or dual-cure capabilities), UV6160 stands out for its balanced combination of high strength, superior optical performance, and rapid cure specifically for clear substrates.
