Product Name
Permabond Initiator 46 (for use with Permabond TA4246 toughened structural acrylic adhesive)
Brief Description
Permabond Initiator 46 is a monomer specifically designed to initiate the rapid, room-temperature cure of Permabond TA4246, a toughened structural acrylic adhesive. It forms a crucial part of a two-part, no-mix adhesive system that creates very high-strength, durable bonds across a wide variety of substrates.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding a wide variety of substrate materials.- Replacing rivets or welding for more lightweight, durable assemblies.- Applications requiring high shear and peel strength.- Applications needing excellent impact resistance.- Structural bonding in demanding environments.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Cladding- Construction/Building Services- Distributers & Resellers- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Industrial Supply- Marine- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Designed to initiate the cure of Permabond TA4246.- Requires no dry time for the initiator.- Part of a two-part, no-mix system where the initiator is applied to one surface and the adhesive to the other.- Facilitates fast cure at room temperature.- Can be used to replace traditional fastening methods like rivets or welding.- Provides a short cure time for bonded components.- Contributes to excellent environmental durability and chemical resistance of the cured adhesive system.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Monomer (Initiator 46), Methyl methacrylate (TA4246)- Appearance: Amber liquid (Initiator 46), Amber liquid (TA4246)- High shear and peel strength (when used with TA4246).- Excellent impact strength (when used with TA4246).- Good chemical resistance (when used with TA4246).- Wide operating temperature range for cured adhesive: -40°C to 120°C (-40°F to 250°F) for continuous operation, with higher temperatures for brief periods.- Fixture time (aluminum, no gap): 1-2 minutes.- Full cure: 24 hours at 23°C.- Maximum gap fill: 0.5 mm (0.02 in).
Surface Compatibility
- Adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.- Metals (e.g., mild steel, aluminum, copper and its alloys, often benefiting from light abrasion).- Composites.- Plastics (compatibility check recommended for some thermoplastics).- Glass.- Ceramics.- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and grease-free prior to application.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other Permabond structural acrylic adhesives, such as Permabond TA439 & Initiator 43, Permabond TA452, Permabond TA4522, Permabond TA4605, Permabond TA4610, and Permabond TA4611.- Traditional mechanical fastening methods like riveting.- Welding.- Other brands of two-part structural acrylic adhesives.
Comparison Note
Permabond Initiator 46, when used in conjunction with Permabond TA4246, provides a high-performance alternative to conventional fastening methods such as rivets and welding. This no-mix system offers rapid room-temperature curing, exceptional shear and peel strength, and excellent impact resistance. It is particularly well-suited for demanding structural bonding applications across diverse materials where speed of assembly, durability, and the creation of lightweight structures are critical.
