Product Name
- Permabond Initiator 41 (for use with the TA series of Toughened structural acrylic adhesive)
Brief Description
Permabond Initiator 41 is a solvent-free, amber-colored liquid designed as a no-mix resin and initiator system for use with Permabond TA (Toughened Structural Acrylic) adhesives. It acts as an activator to accelerate the cure of these structural acrylic adhesives, allowing for either a long open time or immediate bonding after application.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Accelerating the cure of Permabond TA series structural acrylic adhesives.- Bonding metals, ferrites, ceramics, and various thermoplastics.- Non-corrosive bonding to sensitive copper parts or other electrically conductive surfaces when used with Permabond TA459.- High-temperature applications and bonding ferrites and metals when used with Permabond TA437.- Structural bonding applications requiring high tensile, shear, and peel strength, as well as shock and impact resistance.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense (for high-performance structural bonding)- Automotive Service/Repair (for bonding metals, plastics, and composites in vehicles)- Chemical Industry (as a chemical product used in various processes)- Construction/Building Services (for structural bonding of diverse materials)- Electrical Services or Products (due to non-corrosive properties for copper and use in electric motors and electronics)- Engineering Services (for designing and implementing adhesive solutions)- Fabrication (for general bonding in manufacturing processes)- General Manufacturing (for a wide range of bonding applications)- LED/Electronics (for sensitive electronic applications and non-corrosive bonding)- Marine (for demanding structural bonding applications)- Metal Fabrication (primarily for bonding various metals)- Military (for demanding and high-performance applications)- Plastic Fabrication (for bonding certain plastics, including polyolefins)- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle (for structural bonding in vehicle manufacturing and repair)
Special and Unique Features
- No-mix resin and initiator system, simplifying application.- Solvent-free formulation, contributing to a safer work environment.- Allows for a long open time if needed, providing flexibility in assembly.- Enables immediate bonding after application without waiting for solvent evaporation.- Brush-on liquid for quick and easy application.- Formulated to minimize attack and maximize performance on certain plastics.
Key Properties
- **Color:** Amber- **Viscosity:** <50 mPa.s- **Flashpoint:** >90°C- **Specific Gravity:** 1.0- **On-part life:** 30 minutes- **Handling time (with Permabond TA435 at 23°C):** <2 minutes for ~0mm gap, 10 minutes for 0.25mm gap, 20 minutes for 0.5mm gap.- **Storage Temperature:** 5 to 25°C
Surface Compatibility
- Compatible with surfaces that are clean, dry, and grease-free prior to application.- Designed for use with Permabond TA structural acrylic adhesives on a wide variety of substrates.- Effectively bonds metals (including sensitive copper parts), ferrites, ceramics, and various thermoplastics.- Can be used with TA46XX series adhesives for bonding low-surface-energy plastics like polypropylene, polyethylene, UHMW, and PTFE, as well as composites.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Bostik Prime Grip:** A one-component, universal, solvent-free primer and adhesion promoter for impervious substrates.- **Henkel Teroson PR Primer Eco:** A water-based primer for preparing substrates for sealing strips, rapid drying, solvent- and isocyanate-free.- *Note: These are general primers/adhesion promoters and may not be direct, exact substitutes for the specific no-mix initiator system of Permabond Initiator 41 with TA series adhesives.*
Comparison Note
Permabond Initiator 41 stands out as a dedicated, solvent-free initiator specifically formulated to work in conjunction with Permabond's TA series of toughened structural acrylic adhesives. Its no-mix system simplifies application, and its properties allow for flexible open times or immediate bonding. While other primers or accelerators exist, they may be designed for different adhesive chemistries or require different application methods, making Initiator 41 a tailored solution for the Permabond TA range.
