Product Name
- PERMABOND HM165 RETAINING COMPOUND ANAEROBIC ADHESIVE GREEN BOTTLE
Brief Description
- Permabond HM165 is a high viscosity, thixotropic anaerobic retaining compound designed to create a strong, durable bond between cylindrical metal parts. It cures in the absence of air when confined between metal surfaces, eliminating gaps and preventing movement in press-fit or slip-fit assemblies. This adhesive is formulated to provide high strength, improved fatigue life, and resistance to chemicals and high temperatures.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Securing bearings into housings or onto shafts.- Retaining gears, pulleys, and bushings onto shafts.- Bonding rotors to shafts in electric motors.- Augmenting press fits and keyways for enhanced strength and reliability.- Locking bushings and sleeves into housings and on shafts.- Preventing fretting corrosion and improving fatigue life in assemblies.- Used in dynamic or periodic loading conditions.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Energy- Engineering Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Industrial Supply- Marine- Metal Fabrication- Petroleum Industry, Products or Services- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- High viscosity and thixotropic properties allow for larger tolerances and prevent run-off during application.- Cures quickly on active metal surfaces in the absence of air.- Provides superior resistance to heat, vibration, hydrocarbons, gases, water, oils, and many chemicals.- Improves fatigue life of assembled components.- Reduces the need for costly press fits, shrink fits, or mechanical fasteners.- Allows for looser machining tolerances.- Fluorescent formula (common for retaining compounds, though not explicitly stated for HM165 in all snippets, it's a general feature of some retaining compounds).
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Acrylic- Appearance: Green- Viscosity @ 25°C: 2 rpm: 25,000 mPa.s (cP); 20 rpm: 10,000 mPa.s (cP)- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.3 mm (0.01 in)- Handling Strength (M10 Steel) @ 23°C: 15-20 minutes- Full Strength (M10 Steel) @ 23°C: 24 hours- Shear Strength (steel collar & pin ISO10123): 20 MPa (2900 psi)- High Temperature Resistance: Withstands working temperatures up to 300°F (150°C) and higher for brief periods.- Minimum Temperature: -55°C (-65°F)- UV fluorescence: Yes
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for bonding metal parts.- Best results are obtained on clean, dry, and grease-free surfaces.- Roughened surfaces (~25μm) generally yield higher bond strengths.- Cure speed can be affected by the type of metal; copper and its alloys cure faster, while oxidised or passivated surfaces (e.g., stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) may have reduced cure speed.- Activators (e.g., Permabond A905 or ASC10) can be used to accelerate cure on inactive surfaces or in colder conditions.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite Retaining Compounds (e.g., Loctite 609, 648, 680)- Other brands of anaerobic retaining compounds from manufacturers like Huyett or Sealxpert.- Mechanical fastening methods such as press fits, shrink fits, keys, and splines (though retaining compounds often augment or replace these for improved performance).
Comparison Note
- Permabond HM165 is a high-strength retaining compound specifically formulated for securing cylindrical metal assemblies, distinguishing it from anaerobic threadlockers (used for threaded fasteners) and gasketing compounds (used for flange sealing). It offers superior gap-filling capabilities and higher strength compared to many threadlockers, making it ideal for applications requiring robust, permanent bonding of non-threaded components.
