Permabond HM162 is a medium viscosity retaining compound that cures when confined between metal parts to form an extremely tough bond. It is best suited for cylindrical parts and where high temperature resistance is required. In the uncured, liquid state, the adhesive wets the metal surfaces, keying into all surface irregularities and fills the space between the mated parts.
Feature:
- Rapid cure
- Very high strength
- Improved fatigue life
- Excellent chemical resistance
- Excellent temperature resistance
Product Name
Permabond HM162 Retaining Compound Green Bottle
Brief Description
Permabond HM162 is a medium viscosity anaerobic retaining compound designed to cure when confined between close-fitting metal parts. It forms an extremely tough, high-strength bond, making it ideal for cylindrical assemblies requiring excellent temperature and chemical resistance.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding bearings into housings- Securing gears onto shafts- Retaining cylindrical, non-threaded assemblies- General assembly of metal components requiring high strength and temperature resistance
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Energy- Engineering Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Industrial Supply- Marine- Medical Device/ Prosthetics (for retaining applications in device assembly)- Metal Fabrication- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Rapid cure for efficient assembly- Very high strength for durable bonds- Improved fatigue life of assembled components- Excellent chemical resistance against various fluids- Excellent temperature resistance, up to 200°C continuous, with brief periods at higher temperatures- Medium viscosity for controlled application- UV fluorescence for easy inspection
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Acrylic- Appearance: Green liquid- Viscosity @ 25°C: 1,000 mPa.s (cP)- Specific Gravity: 1.1- Maximum gap fill: 0.2mm (0.008")- Handling strength (M10 steel) @23°C: 5 minutes- Full strength (M10 steel) @23°C: 24 hours- Torque strength (M10 steel ISO10964): Break 32 N·m (280 in.lb), Prevail 57 N·m (510 in.lb)- Shear strength (steel collar & pin ISO10123): 30 MPa (4300 psi)- Operating temperature range: -55°C to 200°C (-65°F to 392°F)
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for metal parts- Best results on clean, dry, and grease-free surfaces- Roughened surfaces (~25μm) generally yield higher bond strengths- Cure speed is faster on active metals like copper and its alloys- Cure speed may be reduced on inactive or passivated surfaces such as stainless steel, zinc, and aluminum- Not recommended for use with oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or strong oxidizing materials- Users should check compatibility with thermoplastics as the product may adversely affect some
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite Green High Strength Retaining Compound (e.g., Loctite 648, 609, 620 are common types)- Permabond HM160 (close substitute for 3M 4173, 3M 4174 anaerobic adhesives)- Permabond HM165 (close substitute for Adhesive Systems (ASI) 20RC)- Permabond HM167 (close substitute for Adhesive Systems (ASI) 60RC)- Other Permabond retaining compounds like HM163 and HM165, depending on specific requirements
Comparison Note
Permabond HM162 stands out for its combination of rapid cure and high-temperature resistance, making it suitable for demanding applications where quick assembly and performance under heat are critical. While HM163 offers rapid cure and good gap fill for chrome parts, and HM165 provides maximum gap fill and high-temperature resistance, HM162 offers a balanced profile of fast curing and robust high-temperature performance.
