Permabond HM161 is a single component liquid that cures only when in contact with metal parts and oxygen is excluded. The liquid adhesive fills the “air space’ between parts and upon cure unitizes and retains the mated parts. Thus it prevents their movement relative to each other, eliminating wear, erosion and pitting. HM161 cures to a tough cross-linked plastic that will prevent the corrosion of mated parts and provides excellent environmental and temperature resistance.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
♦ Speeds up production
♦ Improves alignment
♦ Strengthens joint
♦ Simple one-part system
♦ Excellent shear strength
♦ Good environmental resistance
MIL-R-46082B Type III Each lot of HM161 is tested to the lot requirements of these specifications. ASTM D5363 AN 0421 Group 04 Class 2 Grade 1
Each lot of HM161 is tested to the general requirements defined in paragraphs 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 and the detail requirements defined in section 5.2
Product Name
PERMABOND HM161 ANAEROBIC RETAINING COMPOUND ADHESIVE GREEN BOTTLE
Brief Description
Permabond HM161 is a high-strength, one-component anaerobic retaining compound adhesive. It is designed to fill the "air space" between metal parts, curing in the absence of oxygen and in contact with metal surfaces to unitize and retain mated components. This prevents relative movement, wear, erosion, and pitting, while also offering excellent shear strength, corrosion prevention, and resistance to environmental factors and temperature.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Securing bearings, gears, pulleys, and bushings onto shafts or into housings.- Bonding rotors to shafts.- Augmenting press fits and keyways.- Securing cylindrical components in slip, press, or shrink fit assemblies.- Preventing loosening, wear, and fretting corrosion in rotating machinery.- Strengthening joints and improving alignment.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Engineering Services- Distributers & Resellers- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- One-component liquid system.- Cures only when in contact with metal parts and oxygen is excluded.- Prevents corrosion of mated parts.- Provides excellent environmental and temperature resistance.- High-strength, permanent retention.- MIL-SPEC Compliant (MIL-R-46082B Type III, ASTM D5363 Group 04, Class 2, Grade 1).- Fills gaps and enhances joint strength, reducing the need for tight press fits.- Fast curing at room temperature (handling strength in ~10 minutes).- 100% solids, solvent-free.- UV Fluorescence for quality control.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Methacrylates.- Appearance: Green.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 2,000 mPa.s (cP) (medium viscosity, thixotropic).- Specific Gravity: 1.1.- Gap Fill: 0.25 mm (0.01 in).- Handling Strength: ~10 minutes at 23°C (73°F).- Full Cure Time: 24 hours.- Torque Strength (M10 steel ISO10964): Break 31 N·m (275 in.lb), Prevail 45 N·m (400 in.lb).- Shear Strength (steel collar & pin ISO10123): 24 MPa (3500 psi).- Temperature Range: -55°C to 150°C (-65°F to 300°F).
Surface Compatibility
- Performs best on clean steel.- Also performs well on most metals, including aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and plated materials.- Can give good results on oily parts, but cleaning is recommended for optimum performance.- Cure speed is faster on active metals like copper and its alloys.- Cure speed is slower on oxidized or passivated surfaces like stainless steel, zinc, and aluminum.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite® 648- 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ RT38- Permatex® High-Strength Retaining Compound- Loctite® 680 (similar high-strength, green, anaerobic retaining compound)- Permabond HM160, HM162, HM165, HM167 (other Permabond retaining compounds)
Comparison Note
Permabond HM161 is a premium, high-performance alternative to other well-known retaining compounds, offering MIL-SPEC compliance and robust performance for critical industrial applications. It is specifically formulated for gap fill and slip fits, providing high shear strength and excellent resistance to environmental factors.
