PERMABOND HM160 Anaerobic Retaining Compound Adhesive Green Bottle
Brief Description
Permabond HM160 is a high-strength, medium-viscosity anaerobic retaining compound adhesive designed for securing cylindrical metal assemblies. It cures in the absence of oxygen when confined between metal parts, forming a tough, impact-resistant polymer that prevents loosening due to vibration, thermal expansion, or heavy loads. This adhesive also effectively seals joints against environmental damage and corrosion.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Securing bearings, shafts, bushings, and cylindrical assemblies.- Retaining gears, sprockets, and pulleys onto shafts.- Bonding cylinder liners into engine blocks or sleeves into housings.- Augmenting press fits and keyways.- Dressing worn parts to keep machinery online.- Used in slip-fit, press-fit, or shrink-fit assemblies.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle- Industrial Supply- Distributers & Resellers- Military
Special and Unique Features
- High-strength, permanent retention.- MIL-SPEC Compliant (meets MIL-R-46082B Type II and ASTM D5363).- Fills small gaps and enhances fit strength, reducing the need for tight press fits.- Fast curing at room temperature, achieving handling strength in approximately 15 minutes.- Prevents corrosion and moisture ingress.- Increases bearing and shaft life by reducing stress, wear, and misalignment.- 100% Solids, solvent-free formulation.- Withstands vibration and thermal expansion.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Methacrylates.- Appearance: Green liquid.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 600 mPa.s (medium viscosity).- Specific Gravity: 1.1.- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.2 mm (0.008 in).- Handling Strength: ~15 minutes at 23°C (73°F).- Full Cure Time: 24 hours.- Temperature Range: -55°C to 150°C (-65°F to 300°F).- Shear Strength (Steel Collar & Pin, ISO 10123): 14 MPa (2000 psi).- Torque Strength (M10 Steel, ISO 10964): Break: 30 N·m (270 in.lb), Prevail: 50 N·m (450 in.lb).
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for use with metal parts.- Cures when confined between metal parts in the absence of oxygen.- Best results are achieved on clean, dry, and grease-free surfaces.- Copper and its alloys can accelerate cure speed, while oxidized or passivated surfaces (e.g., stainless steel) may reduce it.- Not recommended for plastic components.

Comparison Note
Anaerobic retaining compounds like Permabond HM160 offer significant advantages over traditional mechanical joining methods such as press fits, shrink fits, keys, splines, riveting, or welding. They provide 100% surface-to-surface contact, leading to greater load-carrying capacity, often more than 5 times that of mechanical joining techniques. This product helps eliminate fretting corrosion, reduces assembly stresses, and allows for looser machining tolerances, which can result in reduced costs and faster production. Retaining compounds are generally of higher strength and specifically formulated for bonding cylindrical elements, distinguishing them from threadlockers which are designed for threaded fasteners.
