Epoxies are widely used in the marine, automotive, aerospace, appliance, general assembly and construction industries. Applications are diverse and include bonding handles onto tools, aerospace structures, kitchen counter tops, motor housings and mounting brackets.
PERMABOND ET5401 is a two-part, 2:1 mixable, semiflexible toughened no slump epoxy adhesive with good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as wood, metal, ceramics and some plastics and composites. Permabond ET5401 forms tough bonds providing high peel resistance and high shear strength coupled with excellent resistance to high temperatures. ET5401 performance is enhanced by curing at high temperature or being exposed to high temperature (such as during paint-stoving).
Features & Benefits
- Adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
- Full cure at room temperature
- Set time 10 - 12 min
- Easy to apply
- High shear and peel strength
- Good impact strength
- High temperature resistance
- Non-drip rheology
Product Name
Permabond ET5401 Epoxy Medium Set 10 - 12 min Two Component Epoxy Clear Cartridges & Accessories
Brief Description
Permabond ET5401 is a two-part, 2:1 mixable, semi-flexible, toughened, no-slump epoxy adhesive designed for creating strong, durable bonds. It offers excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates and maintains high performance even under elevated temperatures.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding handles onto tools- Aerospace structures- Kitchen countertops- Motor housings and mounting brackets- General assembly applications- Construction applications- Appliance manufacturing- Concrete crack filling and edge sealing- Processes involving paint baking and wave soldering
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Cabinet & Woodworking- Construction/ Building Services- Countertop- General Manufacturing- LED/Electronics- Marine- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication
Special and Unique Features
- Two-part, 2:1 mixable system- Semi-flexible and toughened formula- Non-drip / no-slump rheology- High peel and shear strength- Good impact strength- Excellent high-temperature resistance, with performance enhanced by heat curing or exposure to high temperatures- Full cure at room temperature- Easy to apply- Can withstand brief periods of higher temperatures like paint baking and wave soldering processes
Key Properties
- **Appearance (Uncured)**: White (Part A), Black (Part B)- **Mix Ratio by Volume**: 2:1- **Usable / Pot Life @23°C**: 10-12 minutes- **Handling Time**: 30-60 minutes- **Full Cure**: 72 hours at 25°C (77°F)- **Maximum Gap Fill**: 5 mm (0.2 in)- **Continuous Service Temperature**: -40°C to +140°C (-40°F to +285°F)- **Peak Temperature Resistance**: Up to +180°C (for brief periods)- **Shear Strength (Mild Steel)**: 30-33 N/mm² (4400-4800 psi)- **Viscosity @ 25°C**: Thick paste (both components)- **Hardness (Shore D)**: 75- **Tg**: 50°C
Surface Compatibility
- Wood- Metal (e.g., mild steel, aluminum, copper, cast iron)- Ceramics- Plastics (some types)- Composites (e.g., FRP Glass Polyester, FRP Glass Epoxy, Carbon Fibre)- Concrete- **Surface Preparation**: Surfaces should be clean, dry, and grease-free. Degreasing with acetone or isopropanol is recommended. Light abrasion may benefit metals like aluminum and copper.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other Permabond two-part epoxies with similar properties or for specific applications (e.g., Permabond ET540 for high temperature, ET536 for excellent gap fill, ET514 for impact resistance)- General structural adhesives from other manufacturers, including various epoxies, polyurethanes, and methacrylates.
Comparison Note
Permabond ET5401 is distinguished by its unique combination of semi-flexibility, toughened characteristics, high temperature resistance, and non-slump rheology. This makes it particularly well-suited for demanding applications that require both robust bonding strength and a degree of flexibility. A notable feature is its performance enhancement upon exposure to heat.
