PERMABOND® ET540 is a two-part, 2:1 mixable, semi-flexible toughened epoxy adhesive with a no-slump, non-drip rheology and good adhesion to a wide variety of substrates including wood, metal, ceramics, and some plastics and composites.
ET540 forms tough bonds that combine high peel resistance with high shear strength, plus excellent resistance to elevated temperatures. Its extended 120-150 minute working life makes it especially well suited to larger assemblies where parts need to be positioned and adjusted before the joint sets.
Why Choose Permabond ET540?
- Adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
- Full cure at room temperature
- Easy to apply with a non-drip, no-slump consistency
- High shear and peel strength
- Good impact strength
- High temperature resistance
- Extended 120-150 minute pot life for larger applications
Strong Bonding Performance
| Substrate | Shear Strength (ISO4587) |
|---|---|
| Mild Steel | 22-26 N/mm² (3,190-3,770 psi) |
| Stainless Steel | 32-35 N/mm² (4,640-5,075 psi) |
| Aluminium | 20-24 N/mm² (2,900-3,480 psi) |
| FRP Glass/Epoxy | 23-27 N/mm² (3,335-3,915 psi) |
| Carbon Fibre | >25 N/mm² (>3,625 psi, substrate failure) |
Peel strength on aluminium runs 60-80 N/25mm (13-18 PIW), with a cured hardness of 60-75 Shore D and 4-8% elongation at break.
Built Tough, Built Flexible
Unlike rigid, brittle epoxies, ET540's toughened semi-flexible formulation resists cracking under impact and vibration while still delivering structural-grade shear and peel strength. It carries a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 45-55°C (113-131°F) and can tolerate brief excursions to higher temperatures, such as paint-baking or wave-soldering processes, provided the joint isn't unduly stressed.
Easy 2:1 Mixing
ET540 mixes 2:1 by volume through a dual cartridge and static mixing nozzle. Usable pot life runs 120-150 minutes at 23°C, with handling time of 150-180 minutes and full cure reached in 72 hours at room temperature.
Recommended Accessories
For the 400ml dual cartridge: Maven MV400-36X Manual Dispenser and MixPac MFQ 10-24T Static Mixing Nozzle.
How to Use
- Insert the cartridge into the application gun and guide the plunger into the cartridge.
- Remove the cartridge cap and dispense material until both sides are flowing evenly.
- Attach the static mixer to the end of the cartridge and begin dispensing.
- Clean and degrease surfaces before applying the adhesive; lightly abrade metals such as aluminium or copper to remove the oxide layer.
- Apply material to one of the substrates.
- Join the parts within the usable pot life of the mixed adhesive.
- Clamp or otherwise apply pressure to the assembly until handling strength is obtained.
- Allow 72 hours at 23°C (73°F) for full cure; heat can be used to accelerate curing.
Typical Applications
- General manufacturing and structural assembly
- Automotive, marine, and transportation repair
- Construction and composite/carbon fibre fabrication
- Cabinetry and woodworking
- Bonding handles, brackets, and mounting hardware

Popular Use Cases for Permabond ET540
Permabond ET540 is a semiflexible, toughened, no-slump two-part epoxy built for jobs that need a strong structural bond without the brittleness of a standard epoxy. Its 2:1 mix ratio by volume and extended 120-150 minute pot life give installers room to position and adjust larger assemblies before the adhesive sets.
General Manufacturing & Structural Assembly
With shear strengths of 22-26 N/mm² on mild steel and 32-35 N/mm² on stainless steel, ET540 holds up to demanding structural loads while its toughened, semi-flexible formulation resists the cracking that can affect rigid epoxies under impact or vibration.
Typical applications include:
- Bonding handles, brackets, and mounting hardware onto metal housings
- General assembly across wood, metal, ceramics, and composites
- Appliance and enclosure assembly
- Repair and fabrication work needing high peel and shear strength
Automotive, Marine & Transportation Repair
ET540's high temperature resistance and good impact strength make it suitable for components exposed to heat, vibration, and the elements.
Common uses include:
- Automotive body and trim repair
- Marine vessel and watercraft repair
- Bonding components exposed to brief high-temperature excursions, such as paint-baking
Construction & Composite Fabrication
Strong adhesion to FRP glass/epoxy, carbon fibre, and composite substrates (both tested to substrate failure in Permabond's own data) supports fabrication work where the bond needs to outperform the material around it.
This supports:
- Composite and carbon fibre panel bonding
- Construction and building-component assembly
- Cabinetry and woodworking joints needing a gap-filling, non-drip adhesive
A Dependable Choice for Demanding General-Purpose Bonding
Overall, ET540 is especially useful when a job calls for a toughened, semi-flexible epoxy with high peel and shear strength across a wide range of substrates, a non-drip rheology that stays put on vertical or overhead joints, and an extended working time for larger assemblies — all while curing fully at room temperature.
