Product Name
Permabond ET515 1:1-Ratio Medium Set 10 - 20 min Two-Part Epoxy Adhesive Cartridges and Accessories
Brief Description
Permabond ET515 is a 1:1 mixable, semi-flexible, toughened two-part epoxy adhesive. It is engineered for structural bonding of diverse substrates, particularly in applications where differential thermal expansion is anticipated. This adhesive offers a relatively fast cure time, reaching handling strength in 20-30 minutes, and provides excellent impact and peel resistance.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding dissimilar materials where differential thermal expansion is anticipated.- Bonding handles onto tools.- Aerospace structures.- Kitchen countertops.- Motor housings and mounting brackets.- Repairing aluminum caravan panels and other vehicle components.- Bonding carbon fiber to various substrates.- Applications subject to flexing, movement, vibration, and shock.- Structural bonding of metal to GRP.- Automotive interior applications involving plastics and wood.- Filter end caps.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Construction/Building Services- Marine- Furniture- Cabinet & Woodworking- LED/Electronics- Fabrication- Industrial Supply- Distributers & Resellers
Special and Unique Features
- Semi-flexible and toughened adhesive formulation.- Provides good impact strength and high peel resistance.- Ideal for bonding dissimilar materials where differential thermal expansion is anticipated.- Achieves full cure at room temperature.- Easy to apply due to its convenient 1:1 mix ratio.- Can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods, suitable for processes like paint baking and wave soldering.- Cures to a clear appearance.
Key Properties
- **Mix Ratio:** 1:1 by volume.- **Usable / Pot Life @23°C:** 10-20 minutes.- **Handling Strength @23°C:** 20-30 minutes.- **Full Cure @23°C:** 72 hours.- **Maximum Gap Fill:** Up to 2mm (0.08").- **Service Temperature:** -55°C to +80°C (-65°F to 176°F), with tolerance for higher temperatures for short durations.- **Hardness (ISO868):** 30-50 Shore D.- **Elongation at Break (ISO37):** 20-40%.- **Appearance (Cured):** Clear.- **Viscosity @25°C:** Approximately 15,000 - 19,000 mPa.s (cP).
Surface Compatibility
- Wood- Metals (e.g., mild steel, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass, cast iron, zinc)- Ceramics- Various Plastics (e.g., Polycarbonate, PA6 30% filled)- Composites (e.g., Carbon Fibre, FRP Glass/Polyester, FRP Glass/Epoxy, GRP)- **Surface Preparation:** Surfaces should be clean, dry, and grease-free. Light abrasion with emery cloth or similar is recommended for some metals like aluminum and copper to remove oxide layers.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond ET500 (5-minute cure, clear epoxy)- Permabond ET505 (Toughened, high-peel strength epoxy)- Permabond ET510 (Rapid curing version of ET505)
Comparison Note
Permabond ET515 distinguishes itself among two-part epoxies through its unique combination of semi-flexibility and toughened properties, which contribute to its excellent impact and peel resistance. This makes it particularly effective for bonding dissimilar materials, where its ability to accommodate differential thermal expansion is a significant advantage. While other Permabond epoxies may offer faster cure times (e.g., ET500) or higher initial peel strength (e.g., ET505, ET510), ET515 provides a balanced profile of flexibility, toughness, and a moderate set time, making it a versatile choice for demanding structural bonding applications requiring resilience against movement and shock.
