Product Name
Permabond 792 Instant Adhesive-for Difficult Plastics & Rubbers (Certified P1 Food Grade Compound)
Brief Description
Permabond 792 is a low-viscosity, ultra-fast setting, surface-insensitive ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive, commonly known as instant adhesive or super glue. It is engineered for rapidly bonding a diverse range of substrates, including challenging plastics and rubbers, as well as acidic surfaces like wood and plated metals. A key characteristic is its certification as a P1 Food Grade Compound, meaning it is NSF Approved as a Non-food Compound (Category Code S4, Reg. No. 156137), suitable for use in food processing areas where there is no possibility of direct food contact.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Rapid assembly operations involving small components.- Bonding difficult-to-bond plastics and rubbers, such as EPDM, nylon, polypropylene, and polyethylene (often with the use of an appropriate primer).- Adhering acidic surfaces like wood and plated metals.- Ideal for high-speed production lines due to its fast cure.- Wicking applications, allowing the low-viscosity adhesive to penetrate tight-fitting parts and for post-assembly bonding.- Suitable for industrial, medical, and general manufacturing environments.- Compliant for military and aerospace applications.- Maintenance and assembly of equipment within food processing areas, specifically for non-food contact applications.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Food & Beverage Company or Distributor (for non-food contact applications in processing areas).- General Manufacturing.- Medical Device/ Prosthetics.- Aerospace/Defense.- Automotive Service/Repair.- Plastic Fabrication.- Metal Fabrication.- LED/Electronics.- Industrial Supply.- Distributers & Resellers.
Special and Unique Features
- Certified P1 Food Grade Compound (NSF S4/P1 approved for non-food contact in food processing areas).- Surface insensitive, enabling strong bonds on acidic and difficult-to-bond surfaces.- Ultra-fast setting time, achieving handling strength in 2-3 seconds.- Low viscosity, ideal for wicking into tight gaps and for precision application.- Minimizes the occurrence of frosting and fogging, improving aesthetic finish.- MIL-SPEC Compliant (MIL-A-46050C Type II, Class 2 and CID A-A-3097 Type II, Class 2).- Single-part adhesive, requiring no mixing or heat cure, simplifying application.- 100% reactive and solvent-free, contributing to an eco-friendly profile with no VOCs.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Ethyl cyanoacrylate.- Appearance: Colourless/Clear.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 60-125 mPa.s (cP), a low viscosity similar to cooking oil.- Gap Fill: Up to 0.15 mm (0.006 in).- Fixture / Handling Time: Typically 2-3 seconds for steel, Buna-N rubber, and phenolic.- Full Cure Time: Achieves full strength within 24 hours.- Shear Strength (ISO 4587): Steel: 18-22 N/mm² (2600-3200 psi); ABS: 8 N/mm² (1160 psi); SF. PVC: >10 N/mm² (>1450 psi); Polycarbonate: 10 N/mm² (1450 psi).- Tensile Strength (ISO 6922): >20 N/mm² (>3000 psi).- Temperature Range: Operates from -55°C to 82°C (-65°F to 180°F), with brief tolerance for higher temperatures.
Surface Compatibility
- Plastics, including difficult-to-bond types like EPDM, nylon, polypropylene, and polyethylene (with appropriate primer).- Rubbers and elastomers, including silicone (with appropriate primer).- Metals, including plated metals.- Ceramics.- Wood.- Paper, card, and leather.- Acidic surfaces.- Porous surfaces (enhanced with an activator).
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite® 401.- 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ CA40.- Permatex® Surface-Insensitive Super Glue.- Loctite® 416™ Super Bonder® Instant Adhesive.- Other Permabond cyanoacrylates such as Permabond 795, 798, and 910FS.
Comparison Note
Permabond 792 stands out as an ultra-fast, high-strength bonding solution, frequently positioned as a direct alternative to other leading surface-insensitive cyanoacrylates like Loctite 401 and 3M CA40. Its adherence to MIL-SPEC standards and its NSF P1/S4 approval for non-food contact in food processing environments provide distinct advantages for applications within regulated industries.
