Product Name
Permabond Anaerobic Threadlocker Adhesive HM118
Brief Description
Permabond HM118 is a high-strength, red, thixotropic anaerobic adhesive specifically engineered for permanently locking and sealing metal threaded fasteners. It effectively prevents loosening caused by vibration, shock, and thermal expansion, while also providing robust corrosion protection to the assembly.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Permanent locking of bolts, nuts, and screws in critical assemblies.- Securing fasteners in machinery and equipment manufacturing.- Automotive assembly, including engine bolts, transmission bolts, and other critical components.- Aerospace industry applications for fasteners in aircraft components to ensure safety and reliability under extreme conditions.- Heavy machinery and industrial equipment to secure bolts and screws subjected to heavy loads and vibrations.- Securing screws in circuit boards and small electronic devices, preventing loosening due to thermal expansion or vibration.- Preventing loosening, leakage, and corrosion in various threaded assemblies.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/Building Services (for heavy machinery and industrial equipment)- Electrical Services or Products (for electronics applications)- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Metal Fabrication- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Provides high-strength, permanent locking for threaded fasteners.- Prevents loosening caused by vibration and shock.- Meets MIL-SPEC MIL-S-46163A (Group 03, Class 3, Grade 1) and ASTM D5363 AN 0331, ensuring compliance for military and aerospace applications.- Achieves handling strength in approximately 10 minutes at 23°C and full cure within 24 hours at room temperature.- Features a non-drip, thixotropic formula that stays in place during application.- Offers excellent corrosion protection for fasteners.- Demonstrates superior environmental resistance.- Formulated as 100% solids and solvent-free, making it environmentally friendly.- Lubricates threads for easier assembly.- Includes UV fluorescence for easy inspection.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Methacrylate esters.- Appearance: Red.- Viscosity @ 25°C (20 RPM): 1,800 mPa.s (cP), Thixotropic.- Specific Gravity: 1.1.- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.2mm (0.008").- Maximum Thread Size: M20 (3/4").- Handling Strength (M10 steel) @23°C: 10 minutes.- Full Strength (M10 steel) @23°C: 24 hours.- Torque strength (M10 steel ISO10964): Break 23 N·m (200 in.lb); Prevail 32 N·m (280 in.lb).- Shear Strength (steel collar & pin ISO10123): 17 MPa (2500 psi).- Temperature Range: -55°C to 150°C (-65°F to 300°F).
Surface Compatibility
- Cures fast and reliably on active metals such as steel, cadmium, zinc, and other plated fasteners.- Copper and its alloys will accelerate the cure speed.- Oxidized or passivated surfaces, like stainless steel, may reduce cure speed; activators (e.g., Permabond A905 or ASC10) or increased temperature can be used to reduce curing time.- Best results are achieved on clean, dry, and grease-free surfaces; suitable solvent-based cleaners (e.g., acetone or isopropanol) are recommended for surface preparation.- Roughened surfaces (approximately 25μm) generally yield higher bond strengths.- Not recommended for use in contact with oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or strong oxidizing materials.- Users should verify compatibility with thermoplastics before use.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite® 271- 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ TL71- Permatex® Red Threadlocker- Permabond MM115 (general-purpose threadlocker and sealant)- Permabond HM128 (high strength adhesive for permanent assembly)- Permabond HH120 (permanent, maximum strength, for large diameter bolts)
Comparison Note
Permabond HM118 is a high-strength, permanent anaerobic threadlocker, ideal for applications where fasteners require maximum resistance to loosening and where disassembly is not a regular requirement. It provides an equivalent, high-performance solution to other industry-standard red, high-strength threadlockers. While lower strength threadlockers (e.g., purple or blue) allow for easier disassembly, HM118 is designed for permanent assemblies, offering superior off-torque strength. Its thixotropic, non-drip consistency ensures precise application, and its 100% solids, solvent-free formulation underscores its environmental benefits. For removal of permanently locked fasteners, careful heating of the part to 450-600°F is typically required to soften the cured adhesive.
