Restore worn parts without machining using Permabond HH040. This high-viscosity, gap-filling anaerobic retaining compound is engineered to bridge gaps up to 0.010 inches, making it the perfect solution for repairing worn shafts, spun bearings, and oversized housings. By creating a 100% solid contact seal, it locks cylindrical assemblies with high shear strength, prevents fretting corrosion, and eliminates the need for costly replacement parts.
Permabond HH040 is a single component liquid that cures only when in contact with metal parts and oxygen is excluded. The liquid adhesive fills the "air space" between parts and upon cure unitizes and retains male and female parts. Thus it prevents their movement relative to each other, eliminating wear, erosion, and pitting. HH040 cures to a tough cross-linked plastic that will prevent the corrosion of mated parts and provides excellent environmental and temperature resistance.
- Simple one-part system
- Shaft-hub assemblies can be made with slip fits
- Expensive press fits can be eliminated
- High viscosity for maximum gap filling ability
- Excellent shear strength
- Superior environmental resistance
- Thixotropic viscosity allows easy dispensing
Product Name
Permabond HH040 Anaerobic Retaining Compound
Brief Description
Permabond HH040 is a high-viscosity, single-component anaerobic retaining compound designed to secure cylindrical metal assemblies. It cures in the absence of oxygen when confined between metal surfaces, filling microscopic gaps to prevent relative movement, wear, erosion, and pitting. This adhesive forms a tough, cross-linked plastic that offers excellent environmental and temperature resistance, and prevents corrosion of mated parts.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Securing cylindrical assemblies, such as bearings in housings, bushings on shafts, and gears on spindles.- Eliminating the need for expensive press fits, shrink fits, or mechanical fasteners like keys and splines.- Restoring worn parts without machining, including worn shafts, spun bearings, and oversized housings.- Preventing fretting corrosion.- Filter bonding and sealing rolled seams on filter edges.- Used in high-vibration systems and under difficult environmental conditions.- Locking bushings and sleeves into housings and on shafts.- Rebuilding hole-shaft fitting parts and out-of-tolerance parts.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Industrial Supply- Engineering Services- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Simple one-part system.- Allows shaft-hub assemblies to be made with slip fits, eliminating expensive press fits.- High viscosity for maximum gap-filling ability (up to 0.010 inches / 0.25mm).- Excellent shear strength.- Superior environmental and temperature resistance.- Thixotropic viscosity allows easy dispensing.- Prevents corrosion of mated parts.- UV fluorescence for easy inspection.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Acrylic.- Appearance: Green.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 5,000 mPa.s (cP) Thixotropic.- Specific Gravity: 1.1.- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.25mm (0.01").- Handling Strength (M10 steel @23°C): 15 minutes.- Full Strength (M10 steel @23°C): 24 hours.- Torque Strength (M10 steel ISO10964): Break 25 N·m (220 in.lb), Prevail 37 N·m (330 in.lb).- Shear Strength (steel collar & pin ISO10123): 14 MPa (2000 psi).- Service Temperature Range: -55°C to 149°C (-65°F to 300°F).- Dielectric Strength: 11 kV/mm.- Thermal Conductivity: 0.2 W/(m.K).
Surface Compatibility
- Performs best on clean steel.- Also performs well on most metals, including aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and plated materials.- Can give good results on oily parts, but cleaning is recommended for optimum performance.- Copper and its alloys accelerate cure speed.- Oxidized or passivated surfaces (like stainless steel) reduce cure speed.- Not recommended for use in contact with oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, and other strong oxidizing materials.- Users must check compatibility with thermoplastics.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond HL138 (Close substitute for ASI 03RC, ASI 09RC).- Permabond HM160 (Close substitute for 3M 4173, 3M 4174, ASI 41RC).- Other anaerobic retaining compounds from brands like Loctite (Henkel), ResinLab (Cynergy RC 8000 Series), and Sealxpert.- Permabond HH040 Pure (NSF 61 certified version).
Comparison Note
Permabond HH040 is a high-strength retaining compound specifically formulated for bonding cylindrical components, offering superior gap-filling capabilities and environmental resistance compared to general-purpose threadlockers. It allows for looser machining tolerances and enhances load-carrying capacity, often eliminating the need for costly mechanical fastening methods.
