Get the strength of a structural adhesive with the speed of a super glue. Permabond 731 is a toughened, crystal-clear instant adhesive engineered to resist impact, vibration, and peel forces that would crack standard super glues. Its unique 'slow-set' formula gives you valuable seconds to align parts perfectly before locking them in place, making it the ideal choice for bonding dissimilar materials, flexible components, and aesthetic assemblies where failure is not an option.
PERMABOND 731 is a toughened and flexible cyanoacrylate adhesive designed to provide excellent impact and peel strength, outperforming conventional cyanoacrylates. This product is a 100% reactive, solvent-free adhesive that cures rapidly at room temperature. It's ideal for a wide range of applications due to its robust bonding capabilities on various materials, including metals, plastics, and elastomers.

Directions for Use
-
Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and grease-free. For best results on metals like aluminum, lightly abrade the surface to remove oxide layers.
-
Apply a sparing amount of adhesive to one surface.
-
Bring components together quickly and with accurate alignment.
-
Apply sufficient pressure to spread the adhesive into a thin film.
-
Do not disturb the bond until sufficient strength is achieved (in seconds). Full strength is reached in 24 hours.
Note: For difficult or porous surfaces, using a Permabond activator is recommended. To bond polyolefin materials (polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, silicone), prime the surface first with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP).
Product Name
Permabond 731 Instant Adhesive-Toughened & Flexible Slow-Set General Purpose
Brief Description
Permabond 731 is a toughened, flexible, and crystal-clear ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive engineered to provide superior impact, vibration, and peel strength. It offers a unique 'slow-set' formula, providing valuable seconds for accurate alignment of parts before locking them in place. This 100% reactive, solvent-free adhesive bonds rapidly at room temperature to a wide variety of materials.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding dissimilar materials, such as rubber to metal, with no compromise in bond strength.- Applications requiring resistance to impact, vibration, and peel forces.- Bonding flexible components.- Aesthetic assemblies where a clear, invisible bond line is desired.- General purpose bonding in various manufacturing and repair scenarios.- Ideal for situations where accurate alignment of parts is critical.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Automotive Service/Repair- Fabrication- Furniture- Sign & Display
Special and Unique Features
- **Toughened and Flexible Formula:** Offers superior impact, vibration, and peel strength compared to conventional cyanoacrylates, ensuring more durable bonds.- **Crystal-Clear Cure:** Cures clear/colorless for invisible bond lines, a distinct advantage over many toughened CAs which are often black.- **Slow-Set Advantage:** Provides an extended fixture time (ranging from 15 seconds to 3 minutes depending on the substrate), allowing for accurate positioning and alignment of parts before the adhesive fully sets.- **Rapid Room Temperature Cure:** Bonds quickly without the need for heat or special curing equipment.- **User-Friendly:** Comes ready to use with no mixing required.- **Versatile Bonding:** Effectively adheres to a wide range of materials.- **100% Reactive, Solvent-Free:** A pure adhesive formulation.- **Surface Insensitive:** Bonds well to difficult surfaces, including acidic or plated metals.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Ethyl Cyanoacrylate- Appearance: Clear / Colorless / Transparent- Viscosity @ 25°C: ~150 mPa.s (cP)- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.15 mm (0.006 in)- Fixture/Handling Time (approximate): - Steel: < 30 seconds - Aluminum: 120-180 seconds (2-3 minutes) - Buna N Rubber: 15-20 seconds - ABS: 30-45 seconds - Neoprene: 15-20 seconds- Full Strength: 24 hours- Temperature Range (Cured): -55°C to 100°C (-65°F to 212°F)- Shear Strength (Steel): 24-30 N/mm² (3500-4400 psi)- Peel Strength (ASTM D-903): 40-60 N/25mm (9-13 PIW)- Hardness: 85 Shore D- Cure Mechanism: Moisture cure
Surface Compatibility
- Metals: Steel, Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, Zinc- Plastics: ABS, PVC, Polycarbonate, and other general plastics- Elastomers/Rubbers: Buna N, Neoprene, and other general rubbers- Composite Materials- Wood, Leather- Bonds well to difficult surfaces including acidic or plated metals.- For optimal bonding on polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, or silicone, priming with a polyolefin primer (e.g., Permabond Polyolefin Primer) is recommended.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite 435 (Clear, toughened, impact resistant - considered the closest direct equivalent)- Loctite 431 (Medium viscosity, but less toughened)- 3M Scotch-Weld PR100 (Plastic/Rubber bonder, clear)- Permabond 737 (Toughened, but cures opaque black)- Loctite 480 (Toughened, but cures black)
Comparison Note
Permabond 731 occupies a unique niche by combining the benefits of a clear, toughened, and slow-setting cyanoacrylate adhesive. While standard super glues are typically fast-setting and clear but brittle, and many toughened CAs are tough but cure black, Permabond 731 offers the enhanced durability and impact resistance of toughened adhesives with the aesthetic advantage of a clear bond line, plus the added benefit of a longer fixture time for precise component alignment.
