Maven Plastics - PP Black Plastic (Homopolymer) Welding Rods, Coils & Reels. (Polypropylene Homopolymer)
Plastic Welding Rod Specs:
- 100% pure PP (Homopolymer) moisture-free
- Shape Options are:
- Round 1/8 inch (3mm), 5/32 inch (4mm), and 3/16 inch (5mm)
- Triangle 7/32 inch (5.7mm)
- Flat 1/16 x 5/8 (1.6mm x 16mm)
- Packaging Options are:
- Rods come in packs of 10, 20 & 40 Rods each
- Coils come in 100-ft (approx 1/2 pound) and 200-ft (approx 1 pound)
- Reels come in 10-Lbs and 30-Lbs
Made of 100% pure PP plastic (Copolymer) material, no impurities, vacuum sealed to minimize moisture absorption, which can ruin the rod and cause plastic burns and rough choppy welds. All Plastic Rods should be used with an appropriate plastic welding iron, heat dispenser or torch with applicable attachments.
PP (Copolymer) Rods, Coils & Reels can be used for several popular types of repair jobs, but each plastic repair job needs to be carefully matched to the same type of Plastic Rod or Coil. These rods & coils are ABS Plastic.
Warning: Mixing different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of the welds. Quite Simply, match your plastics and you're good... different plastics simply don't work well together.
PP (Copolymer) Rods, Coils & Reels: Often found without a Recycling label number, but may be found with # 9 recycling. ABS typically includes Lego building blocks, Keyboards, Power Tool Housings, Wall Outlet Covers, Toys
Product Name
Maven Plastics - PP-HO Black Plastic Welding Rods, Coils & Reels - Black (Polypropylene Homopolymer or PPHO)
Brief Description
These are specialized thermoplastic welding rods, coils, and reels made from 100% pure Polypropylene Homopolymer (PPHO) material. Designed for use with appropriate plastic welding irons, heat dispensers, or torches, they facilitate the joining and repairing of plastic components, specifically other polypropylene materials, through various heat welding techniques. The product is engineered to create strong, durable, and chemically resistant bonds.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Fabrication and repair of chemical storage tanks, plating tanks, and cleaning baths.- Welding of ventilation ducts for corrosive gases, fume hoods, and industrial exhaust systems.- Repair of automotive components, such as bumpers.- Construction and repair of boats and marine components.- Manufacturing of laboratory equipment and clean room components.- General plastic fabrication, including sheets, pipes, and other plastic structures.- Water treatment facilities and wastewater/exhaust gas discharge equipment.- Aquaculture construction and repair, such as indoor fish tanks and plastic film liners.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Chemical Industry- Plastic Fabrication- Automotive Service/Repair- Marine- General Manufacturing- Construction/ Building Services- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Food & Beverage Company or Distributor- Industrial Supply- Distributers & Resellers
Special and Unique Features
- Made from 100% pure Polypropylene Homopolymer (PPHO) material, ensuring no impurities.- Offers excellent chemical resistance to a wide array of chemicals, acids, alkalis, and corrosive substances.- Possesses a high strength-to-weight ratio, greater material stiffness, and enhanced durability.- Exhibits good thermal stability and high temperature resistance, with continuous operating temperatures up to 100°C.- Features low moisture absorption, helping to maintain its shape and integrity even in humid or wet conditions.- Is easily weldable and machinable, offering good processability and high welding speed.- Provides corrosion-free performance, making it suitable for harsh chemical and outdoor applications.- Available in various shapes, including round, triangle, and flat, and a range of sizes.
Key Properties
- Material: Polypropylene Homopolymer (PPHO)- Density: Approximately 0.91 g/cm³.- Chemical Resistance: Excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and many organic solvents.- Temperature Resistance: Good, with continuous operating temperatures up to 100°C.- Melting Point: Typically around 160-170°C (softening point), with a melting point of 305°F (151°C).- Tensile Strength: Approximately 30 MPa (3400 psi).- Impact Resistance: High impact strength and toughness.- Water Absorption: Very low, typically less than 0.01%.- Electrical Insulation: Exhibits good electrical resistance.- Lightweight: Yes, contributing to ease of handling and transport.
Surface Compatibility
- Strictly compatible with other Polypropylene (PP) materials, especially Polypropylene Homopolymer (PPHO).- It is not advised to weld different types of plastics together due to incompatibility and the likelihood of poor joint strength and longevity.- Specialized technologies exist for welding dissimilar polymers like PC to PP, but this product is specifically for PP to PP welding.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other plastic welding rods made from different thermoplastic polymers such as Polyethylene (PE) (HDPE, LDPE), PVC, ABS, TPO, and TEO, depending on the base material to be welded.- Adhesives or fasteners can be used for joining plastics, though they are often less effective for polypropylene due to its low surface energy and excellent chemical resistance.- Mechanical fitting through the use of fasteners or interlocking shapes.- Fiberglass mat or sheet with fiberglass resin for certain repair applications.
Comparison Note
- Polypropylene Homopolymer (PPHO) is generally stiffer and stronger than Polypropylene Copolymer (PPC), offering a marginally better maximum working temperature and superior chemical stability.- PPHO boasts a higher strength-to-weight ratio and greater material stiffness compared to polypropylene copolymer.- Compared to Polyethylene (PE), PP typically has a higher temperature resistance (up to 100°C) and is tougher, though it may exhibit lower impact strength.- Polypropylene is recognized as one of the easiest thermoplastics to weld.- Unlike many other plastics, polypropylene is difficult to bond effectively with conventional adhesives due to its chemical resistance and low surface energy, making welding the preferred and most reliable joining method.
