Plastic Welding Rod Specs:
- 100% pure PP (Copolymer) moisture-free
- Shape Options are:
- Round 1/8 inch (3mm), 5/32 inch (4mm), and 3/16 inch (5mm)
- Triangle 7/32 inch (5.7mm)
- Flat 1/16 x 5/8 (1.6mm x 16mm)
- Packaging Options are:
- Rods come in packs of 10, 20 & 40 Rods each
- Coils come in 100-ft (approx 1/2 pound) and 200-ft (approx 1 pound)
- Reels come in 500ft (aapprox 2.5 Lbs), 10-Lbs, 20-Lbs, and 50-Lbs
Made of 100% pure PP plastic (Copolymer) material, no impurities, vacuum sealed to minimize moisture absorption, which can ruin the rod and cause plastic burns and rough choppy welds. All Plastic Rods should be used with an appropriate plastic welding iron, heat dispenser or torch with applicable attachments.
PP (Copolymer) Rods, Coils & Reels can be used for several popular types of repair jobs, but each plastic repair job needs to be carefully matched to the same type of Plastic Rod or Coil. These rods & coils are ABS Plastic.
Warning: Mixing different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of the welds. Quite Simply, match your plastics and you're good... different plastics simply don't work well together.
PP (Copolymer) Rods, Coils & Reels: Often found without a Recycling label number, but may be found with # 9 recycling. ABS typically includes Lego building blocks, Keyboards, Power Tool Housings, Wall Outlet Covers, Toys
Product Name
Maven Plastics - PP-CO Light Gray Plastic Welding Rods, Coils & Reels - (Polypropylene Copolymer)
Brief Description
These are 100% pure Polypropylene Copolymer (PP-CO) welding rods, coils, and reels, specifically designed as a filler material for joining and repairing polypropylene plastic structures and components. They are utilized with hot air plastic welders to create strong, durable, and chemically resistant bonds.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Repairing automotive parts such as bumpers, fenders, and various tanks (e.g., windshield washer, radiator overflow, fuel).- Fabrication and repair of chemical tanks, plating tanks, and industrial pipelines.- Construction and repair of water tanks, fish tanks, and aquaculture equipment.- Joining PP components in general plastic production, including housings, cladding, and industrial containers.- Marine applications for boat construction and repair, including water and fish holding tanks.- Repair of various plastic items like kayaks, canoes, and other plastic goods.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Construction/ Building Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Marine- Plastic Fabrication- Pool/Spa/Plumbing- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Made from 100% pure Polypropylene Copolymer (PP-CO) material, free from impurities.- Vacuum sealed to minimize moisture absorption, preventing rough welds and plastic burns.- Offers strong, flexible, and durable repairs.- Excellent chemical resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments.- Lightweight with high impact resistance and good mechanical strength.- Easy to weld using thermoplastic welding equipment.- Compatible with both PP-CO and PP-HO (Homopolymer Polypropylene) for versatile repairs.
Key Properties
- **Material:** Polypropylene Copolymer (PP-CO)- **Chemical Resistance:** High resistance to many chemical solvents, bases, acids, and organic solvents.- **Impact Strength:** High impact resistance and toughness, especially as a copolymer.- **Flexibility/Durability:** Provides flexible and durable bonds.- **Lightweight:** Low density and high strength-to-weight ratio.- **Moisture Absorption:** Low moisture absorption.- **Thermal Properties:** Good thermal insulation properties; high melting point (around 160-170°C / 320-338°F); becomes brittle below 0°C. Welding temperatures typically range from 230-280°C.- **Processability:** Easy to machine, form, and weld.
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for welding with Polypropylene Copolymer (PP-CO) materials.- Also compatible with Polypropylene Homopolymer (PP-HO).- Crucially, plastic welding requires matching the welding rod material to the parent plastic material for a strong, lasting bond; different plastic types generally do not cross-weld effectively.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Other Plastic Welding Rod Materials:** HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin), PC (Polycarbonate), PA (Nylon).- **Alternative Joining Methods:** Mechanical fasteners (screws, rivets) or structural adhesives, although adhesives can be challenging with polypropylene due to its low surface energy.
Comparison Note
Polypropylene welding rods are favored for their excellent chemical resistance, impact strength, and lightweight properties, making them ideal for applications where durability and resistance to harsh environments are critical. Unlike many adhesives, welding creates a molecular bond, often resulting in a stronger and more permanent joint for thermoplastics like PP. It is essential to match the welding rod material to the base plastic for optimal results.
