Plastic Welding Rod Specs:
- 100% pure ABS moisture-free
- Shape Options are:
- Round 1/8 inch (3mm), 5/32 inch (4mm), and 3/16 inch (5mm)
- Triangle 7/32 inch (5.7mm)
- Flat 1/16 x 5/8 (1.6mm x 16mm)
- Packaging Options are:
- Rods come in packs of 10, 20 & 40 Rods each
- Coils come in 100-ft (approx 1/2 pound) and 200-ft (approx 1 pound)
- Reels come in 500ft (aapprox 2.5 Lbs), 10-Lbs, 20-Lbs, and 50-Lbs
Made of 100% pure ABS moisture-free plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) material, no impurities, vacuum sealed to minimize moisture absorption, which can ruin the rod and cause plastic burns and rough choppy welds. All Plastic Rods should be used with an appropriate plastic welding iron, heat dispenser or torch with applicable attachments.
ABS Rods, Coils & Reels can be used for several popular types of repair jobs, but each plastic repair job needs to be carefully matched to the same type of Plastic Rod or Coil. These rods & coils are ABS Plastic.
Warning: Mixing different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of the welds. Quite Simply, match your plastics and you're good... different plastics simply don't work well together.
ABS Rods, Coils & Reels: Often found without a Recycling label number, but may be found with # 9 recycling. ABS typically includes Lego building blocks, Keyboards, Power Tool Housings, Wall Outlet Covers, Toys
Product Name
Maven Plastics - ABS Natural (Off-White) Plastic Welding Rods, Coils & Reels
Brief Description
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) welding rods are specialized thermoplastic fillers used to create strong, durable bonds when repairing or joining ABS plastic components. These natural (off-white) rods are designed for hot air, nitrogen, or airless plastic welding processes.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Repairing and fabricating automotive parts such as instrument panels, consoles, armrest supports, bumpers, grilles, and sport bike fairings.- Mending household and office items, including toys and power tool housings.- Welding plastic tanks and chemical processing equipment.- Used in 3D printing applications.- Fabricating and repairing structural components and pipe systems.- Creating compact and durable casings for consumer electronics like television frames, mobile phone bodies, and LCD panels.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Construction/ Building Services- Food & Beverage Company or Distributor- General Manufacturing- LED/Electronics- Marine- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Packaging Services or Contractor- Plastic Fabrication- Pool/Spa/Plumbing- Prosumer- Thermoforming- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Made from 100% pure ABS material, ensuring consistent quality and optimal weld performance.- Available in rods, coils, and reels for various project sizes and application methods.- Natural (off-white) color for versatile use where a specific color match isn't critical or for subsequent painting.- Exhibits superior mechanical and thermal properties compared to many commodity plastics.- Good chemical and stress resistance.
Key Properties
- Material: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)- Color: Natural (Off-White)- Rigid thermoplastic with a balance of toughness, rigidity, and creep resistance.- High surface hardness and impact resistance.- Good oil resistance.- Dimensionally stable.- Excellent mechanical properties, including impact strength.- Good chemical and electrical insulation properties.- Melting point: Approximately 230°C to 250°C.- Continuous use temperature: Max. 85°C to 100°C.- Hygroscopic properties (up to 1.5% water absorption), requiring sufficient drying before use.
Surface Compatibility
- Strictly compatible with ABS plastic surfaces.- Mixing with different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of welds due to differing chemical compositions and melting points.
Known backups / known substitutes
- ASA (Acrylic ester-styrene-acrylonitrile) welding rods: An alternative to ABS with improved weather and chemical resistance and toughness, used in 3D printing and automotive industries.- PC+ABS (Polycarbonate + Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) welding rods: Used for welding PC+ABS plastic, found in automotive consoles, instrument panels, and consumer electronics.- Other plastic welding rods for different plastic types: Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride).- Mechanical fasteners or adhesives for non-welding repairs, depending on the application.
Comparison Note
- ABS welding rods offer an excellent balance of properties at an economical price point, providing a combination of toughness with rigidity and creep resistance.- They are a versatile and indispensable technique for modern manufacturing and repair of ABS components, ensuring durable and enduring bonds when matched correctly with the base material.- Compared to other welding methods, hot air or nitrogen welding with rods like ABS is efficient for various parts, though extrusion welding can be faster for very large volumes.
