- Triangle 7/32 inch (5.7mm)
- Flat 1/16 x 5/8 (1.6mm x 16mm)
- Packaging Options are:
- Rods come in packs of 10, 20 & 40 Rods each
- Coils come in 100-ft (approx 1/2 pound) and 200-ft (approx 1 pound)
- Reels come in 500ft (aapprox 2.5 Lbs), 10-Lbs, 20-Lbs, and 50-Lbs
Made of 100% pure ABS moisture-free plastic (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) material, no impurities, vacuum sealed to minimize moisture absorption, which can ruin the rod and cause plastic burns and rough choppy welds. All Plastic Rods should be used with an appropriate plastic welding iron, heat dispenser or torch with applicable attachments.
ABS Rods, Coils & Reels can be used for several popular types of repair jobs, but each plastic repair job needs to be carefully matched to the same type of Plastic Rod or Coil. These Rods, Coils & Reels are ABS Plastic.
Warning: Mixing different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of the welds. Quite Simply, match your plastics and you're good... different plastics simply don't work well together.
ABS Rods, Coils & Reels: Often found without a Recycling label number, but may be found with # 9 recycling. ABS typically includes Lego building blocks, Keyboards, Power Tool Housings, Wall Outlet Covers, Toys
Product Name
Maven Plastics - ABS Black Plastic Welding Rods, Coils & Reels
Brief Description
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) black plastic welding rods, coils, and reels are specialized thermoplastic consumables designed for the repair, joining, and fabrication of ABS plastic components. They are utilized with various plastic welding techniques to create strong, durable, and seamless bonds.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Repairing cracked or damaged automotive parts such as bumpers, dashboards, interior trim, and motorcycle fairings.- Fabrication and assembly of ABS plastic components in manufacturing.- Repair of household items, appliances, and office equipment made from ABS.- Restoration of plastic tanks and chemical processing equipment.- Repair of recreational vehicle (RV) body panels and storage tanks.- 3D printing repairs.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Plastic Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Construction/ Building Services (for ABS pipes/fittings)- Prosumer (for DIY repairs)- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Sign & Display- Furniture- Thermoforming
Special and Unique Features
- Made from 100% pure ABS, moisture-free, and vacuum-sealed to prevent impurities and ensure clean welds.- Available in various shapes (round, triangle, flat) and packaging options (rods, coils, reels) to suit different welding needs.- Provides an excellent balance of properties at an economical price point.- Offers good chemical and stress resistance.- Ensures strong, reliable, and consistent bonds when matched with ABS material.
Key Properties
- **Material:** Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) thermoplastic.- **Color:** Black.- **High Surface Hardness:** Contributes to durability.- **Impact Resistance:** Known for its toughness.- **Good Oil Resistance:** Enhances durability in various environments.- **Chemical Resistance:** Resists inorganic salt solutions, alkalis, acids, and some oils.- **Stress Resistance:** Maintains integrity under stress.- **Rigidity and Creep Resistance:** Provides structural stability.- **Melting Point:** Approximately 230°C to 250°C (for the material itself), with welding temperatures typically between 270°C and 310°C for hot air welding.- **Thermoformable:** Can be easily shaped with heat.- **Electrical Properties:** Exhibits good electrical properties.- **Moisture Resistance:** Offers good moisture resistance.
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for welding ABS to ABS, ensuring the strongest and most consistent bonds.- Can be compatible with ABS/PC (Polycarbonate blend) and PMMA (Acrylic) in some welding methods like ultrasonic welding, though ABS to ABS provides the strongest bond.- May have possible compatibility with PS-GP, PS-HI, PVC-U, and SAN-NAS-ASA, but full compatibility is not guaranteed.- Not compatible with materials such as CA, CP, CAB, ECTFE, LCP, or PPO.- Crucially, plastic welding requires matching the welding rod material to the base material for a strong, lasting bond.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Other Plastic Welding Rods:** Rods made from other thermoplastic materials like Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE), PVC, or Polycarbonate (PC) for their respective plastic types.- **Adhesives/Epoxies:** Plastic bonders or epoxies (e.g., J-B Weld Plastic Bonder) can be used for repairs, though welding often provides a stronger, more material-integrated bond.- **Hot Staplers:** Used for reinforcing cracks and breaks, often in conjunction with welding.- **Solvent Welding:** Utilizes chemicals like methyl ethyl ketone to dissolve and fuse ABS surfaces, creating a bond without needing external heat.
Comparison Note
ABS welding rods create a homogeneous, material-bonded joint, often resulting in a repair as strong as the original material, unlike adhesive bonding which typically forms a superficial bond. The use of the correct ABS rod ensures optimal fusion and durability, whereas mismatched plastics or improper techniques can lead to weak or failed repairs.
