Product Name
LORD 406/17 Fast Setting (4-6 Minute) Acrylic Adhesive
Brief Description
LORD 406/17 is a two-component, fast-setting modified acrylic adhesive system, combining LORD 406 adhesive with LORD Accelerator 17. It is engineered to replace traditional mechanical fastening methods such as welding, brazing, and riveting. This adhesive system delivers high impact and peel strengths, particularly effective in low-temperature environments, and cures efficiently at room temperature.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Replacing welding, brazing, riveting, and other mechanical fastening methods in various assemblies.- Bonding body panels, structural components, and composite parts within the automotive and transportation sectors.- Applications demanding high impact or high peel loads, especially in low-temperature conditions.- Adhering prepared and unprepared metals.- Bonding engineered thermoplastics, including materials like XENOY®, polycarbonate, ABS, and acrylics.- Used in sign manufacturing and assembly.- General manufacturing for both structural and non-structural bonding applications.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Cladding- Construction/Building Services- General Manufacturing- LED/Electronics- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Sign & Display- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Fast setting with a working time of 4-6 minutes.- Two-component acrylic adhesive system for robust bonding.- Effectively replaces mechanical fasteners such as welding, brazing, and riveting.- Optimized performance in low-temperature environments.- Provides high impact and peel strengths.- Non-sag formula ensures it remains in position when applied on vertical or overhead surfaces.- Resistant to extreme temperatures, performing from -40°F to +300°F (-40°C to +149°C).- Exhibits resistance to solvents, oils, moisture, UV exposure, and dilute acids/alkalis.- UL 746C certified when mixed with LORD Accelerator 19.
Key Properties
- Adhesive Type: Two-component Modified Acrylic (MMA)- Set Time: 4-6 minutes- Appearance: Off-white to Tan Paste- Viscosity: 100,000 - 300,000 cP @ 77°F (25°C)- Temperature Resistance: -40°F to +300°F (-40°C to +149°C)- Environmental Resistance: Resists dilute acids, alkalis, solvents, greases, oils, moisture, salt spray, weathering, and indirect UV exposure.- High Impact and Peel Strength- Non-sagging
Surface Compatibility
- Prepared and unprepared metals.- Engineered thermoplastics, including XENOY®, polycarbonate, ABS, and acrylics.- FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic).- Most plastics (may require cleaning or abrading for optimal performance).
Known backups / known substitutes
- LORD 403 and LORD 410 acrylic adhesives (offer different working times within the same series).- LORD 406 with Accelerator 19 or 19GB (alternative accelerators providing varied properties like enhanced high-temperature resistance or bondline thickness control).- Maxlok MX/T3 (a fast-cure, non-sag acrylic adhesive with 6-8 minute handling time and 3-5 minute working time).- Maxlok MX/T6 (a high-strength acrylic adhesive with 20-24 minute handling time and 6-9 minute working time).- Maxlok MX/T18 (an acrylic adhesive with extended working time, 48-72 minute handling time and 18-24 minute working time).- Other structural acrylic adhesives from manufacturers like ASI, Bostik, Permabond, RAMPF, REXCO, and Robnor ResinLab.
Comparison Note
LORD 406/17 is part of the LORD 400 series (including 403, 406, and 410), which provides a range of working times to suit diverse process requirements. This specific formulation is distinguished by its fast-setting nature (4-6 minutes) and is particularly engineered to deliver high impact and peel strengths, performing exceptionally well in low-temperature environments. It serves as an effective replacement for traditional mechanical fastening methods, offering superior environmental resistance compared to conventional joining techniques and certain other adhesive types, such as rubber-based adhesives, which may degrade quickly in outdoor conditions.
