LOCTITE® 290™ is a green, low-viscosity, medium-to-high-strength anaerobic threadlocker designed to wick into already-assembled metal fasteners by capillary action. It cures when confined without air between close-fitting metal surfaces, helping prevent loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration. It can also seal porosity in welds, castings, and powdered-metal parts.
Primary Features & Benefits:
- Wicks into preassembled threaded fasteners, reducing the need for disassembly
- Low-viscosity formula flows into close-fitting threads and fine porosity
- Medium-to-high-strength locking and sealing for metal assemblies
- Helps resist loosening and leakage from shock and vibration
- One-component anaerobic adhesive; no mixing required
- Fluoresces under UV light to support application inspection
- Activator can be used when faster curing is needed or gaps are larger
Typical Applications:
- Locking and sealing preassembled threaded metal fasteners
- Securing screws, bolts, and fittings in industrial equipment and machinery
- Maintenance and repair work where disassembly before application is impractical
- Sealing porosity in welds, castings, and powdered-metal components
- Vibration-resistant assemblies in automotive, transportation, manufacturing, and fluid-power equipment
Compatible Materials:
- Close-fitting metal surfaces including steel, stainless steel, brass, and plated metals
- Cure speed varies by substrate, gap, temperature, and use of activator
- Not normally recommended for plastics, particularly thermoplastics that may stress-crack; confirm compatibility before use
- Do not use in pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems, or as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidizing materials
Technical Properties:
- Technology: Acrylic
- Chemical type: Dimethacrylate ester
- Cure mechanism: Anaerobic; activator may be used as a secondary cure method
- Color / appearance: Green liquid
- Components: One component; no mixing required
- Strength: Medium to high
- Specific gravity at 25°C: 1.08
- Brookfield viscosity at 25°C: 20-55 mPa·s (cP)
- Fluorescence: Positive under UV light
- Breakaway torque after 24 hours at 22°C on M10 steel nuts and bolts: 10 N·m (90 lb·in), ISO 10964
- Prevail torque after 24 hours at 22°C on M10 steel nuts and bolts: 29 N·m (260 lb·in), ISO 10964
- Breakloose torque on pre-torqued M10 steel nuts and bolts: 30 N·m (270 lb·in), ISO 10964
- Maximum prevail torque on pre-torqued M10 steel nuts and bolts: 40 N·m (350 lb·in), ISO 10964
- Compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars: at least 5.4 N/mm² (780 psi), ISO 10123
Directions:
- For best results, clean the threads or area with a suitable LOCTITE® cleaning solvent and allow to dry.
- For preassembled fasteners with through holes, apply several drops at the screw-and-body junction and allow the product to wick into the engaged threads. Avoid touching the bottle tip to metal.
- For blind-hole assembly, apply several drops down the internal threads to the bottom of the hole before assembly.
- When cure speed is too slow or gaps are larger, apply a suitable LOCTITE® activator according to its instructions.
- For porosity sealing, clean the area, heat it to approximately 121°C (250°F), allow it to cool to approximately 85°C (185°F), and then apply the product.
- For disassembly, first use standard hand tools. If necessary because of excessive engagement length, heat the nut or bolt locally to approximately 250°C (482°F) and disassemble while hot.
Storage:
- Store unopened in a dry, well-ventilated location in the original container.
- Optimal storage temperature: 8°C to 21°C (46°F to 70°F).
- Storage below 8°C or above 28°C (82°F) can adversely affect product properties.
- Do not return unused material to the original container because contamination can reduce shelf life.
Certifications / Agency Approvals:
- Tested to the lot requirements of Military Specification Mil-S-46163A; regional approval
- North American production lots are tested to applicable general and detail requirements of ASTM D5363
- NSF Category P1 registered for use as a sealant where there is no possibility of food contact in and around food-processing areas; regional approval
- Certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for commercial and residential potable-water systems not exceeding 82°C (180°F); regional approval
Safety & Transportation:
- Warning: Causes serious eye irritation, may cause respiratory irritation, and is harmful to aquatic life.
- Use only with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing mist or vapor and wear eye protection; butyl or nitrile gloves are recommended.
- According to the supplied Australian SDS dated March 10, 2026, the product is not classified as dangerous goods under ADG road/rail, IMDG marine, or IATA air transport rules.
- The supplied SDS does not provide a U.S. DOT classification; confirm U.S. ground requirements against the current U.S. SDS before shipment.
- For complete handling, first-aid, disposal, and transportation precautions, consult the current Safety Data Sheet.
