Product Name
DOWSIL 3140 Clear RTV Coating 90ml Tube
Brief Description
DOWSIL 3140 Clear RTV Coating is a one-part, translucent, moisture-curing RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) silicone adhesive/coating. It is specifically engineered to protect sensitive electronic assemblies and components from environmental damage, corrosion, and electrical stress. This coating is solvent-free, flowable, and self-leveling, providing a clear, flexible barrier.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Protection of rigid and flexible circuit boards (PCBs).- Improved pin/solder joint coverage and sealing.- Thin-section encapsulation of electronic components.- Environmental and corrosion protection for sensitive components.- Dielectric protection and electrical insulation.- Shielding avionics and mission-critical systems.- Protecting automotive electronics and under-hood modules.- Safeguarding raw materials, sub-assemblies, and finished components during transport and storage, especially in harsh or humid environments.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Electrical Services or Products- LED/Electronics- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- One-part, ready-to-use formulation requiring no mixing.- Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) cure, eliminating the need for ovens.- Good flowability and self-leveling properties for smooth, consistent coverage.- Solvent-free composition, reducing environmental impact and outgassing.- Flame resistant, meeting UL 94 V-1 recognition.- Complies with MIL-A-46146, MIL-I-46058C, and IPC-CC-830 standards for high reliability.- Contains a UV indicator for easy manual and automated inspection.- Offers high elongation and flexibility, providing protection against mechanical shock and thermal cycling stress.- Non-corrosive to sensitive electronic components.
Key Properties
- Color: Clear to slightly hazy translucent liquid.- Viscosity: 34,400 cP (at 23°C).- Tack-free Time: Approximately 90-116 minutes at 25°C and 50% relative humidity.- Cure Time: Cures to a depth of 3mm in 24 hours; full physical properties attained in 7 days.- Durometer Hardness: 31.6 - 32 Shore A.- Tensile Strength: 3.1 MPa (434 psi).- Elongation at Break: 419-420%.- Dielectric Strength: 15-18 kV/mm (385 volts/mil).- Volume Resistivity: 2.1 x 10^14 ohm·cm.- Operational Temperature Range: -45°C to +200°C.- Specific Gravity (Cured): 1.05.
Surface Compatibility
- Forms a strong bond to most clean, dry surfaces including metals, glass, silicone, organic resins, and vulcanized silicone rubber.- Good adhesion to ceramics and many plastics.- For maximum adhesion, the use of primers such as DOW CORNING 1200 OS Primer is recommended.- Not typically recommended for non-reactive metal substrates or non-reactive plastic surfaces like Teflon, polyethylene, or polypropylene without specific surface preparation.
Known backups / known substitutes
- DOWSIL 3145 RTV Mil-A-46146 Adhesive / Sealant (a non-flow, high-strength alternative).- SYLGARD 184 Silicone Elastomer Kit (a two-part encapsulant).- Flowsil Self Levelling RTV Silicone (marketed as a direct equivalent/alternative).- CHT AS1524, AS1700, AS1620 (other 1-part RTV silicone sealants/coatings with varying cure chemistries).- Electrolube HPA200H High Performance Acrylic Conformal Coating (an acrylic-based conformal coating alternative).
Comparison Note
DOWSIL 3140 stands out as a one-part, solvent-free, self-leveling RTV silicone coating, offering an optimal balance of excellent dielectric properties, flame resistance, and flexibility. Its ease of application and room-temperature cure make it highly efficient for high-reliability electronic protection. Compliance with stringent military and industrial standards (MIL-A-46146, UL 94 V-1, IPC-CC-830) further positions it as a trusted solution for demanding applications where a clear, durable, and protective coating is essential.
