Devcon Dev-Thane 5 400ML Grey Urethane Adhesive
Brief Description
Devcon Dev-Thane 5 is a two-part, medium-setting, primerless, high-performance urethane adhesive. It is engineered to provide a unique balance of flexibility, strength, and durability, making it suitable for bonding a wide range of materials. This adhesive is designed to withstand vibration, thermal expansion, and demanding environmental conditions.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding dissimilar substrates such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, concrete, wood, glass, and ABS.- Used in structural applications and for flexible bonding.- Ideal for panel bonding, including composite panels like aluminum honeycomb panels, truck panels, cladding, and SIPs panels.- Assembling interior panels and various components in vehicles and aircraft.- Applications in construction for bonding insulation, flooring, building materials, brick slips, and in PVC composite door manufacturing.- Joining wooden frames and laminated surfaces in furniture production.- Serves as an alternative to traditional fastening methods such as riveting and welding in manufacturing processes.- Suitable for applications requiring resistance to vibration, thermal cycling, and complex material combinations.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Cabinet & Woodworking- Cladding- Concrete- Construction/ Building Services- Commercial Door- Distributers & Resellers- Fabrication- Flooring Installer or Manufacturer- Furniture- General Manufacturing- Industrial Supply- LED/Electronics- Marine (for exterior or immersed applications due to general urethane water resistance)- Metal Fabrication- PVC Trimboard- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Two-part adhesive system.- Primerless application on a wide variety of substrates.- Features a creamy consistency for easy and smooth application.- Capable of bonding to galvanized metals effectively.- Specifically designed to bond dissimilar substrates.- Low shrinkage formula ensures stable and consistent bonds.- Offers excellent tear resistance and high elongation, up to 200%.- Provides good resistance to vibration and impacts.- Forms a flexible bond line that can absorb vibrations and accommodate thermal expansion.- RoHS II compliant.
Key Properties
- Color: Grey- Mix Ratio: 1:1 by volume and weight- Working Time: 5-8 minutes- Fixture Time: 30-45 minutes- Full Cure: 24 hours to 7 days for optimal strength- Service Temperature: -40°F to 250°F (-40°C to 121°C)- Shore Hardness: 63 Shore D- Tensile Strength: 14.5 MPa (2,100 psi)- Shear Strength: 12.7 MPa (1,840 psi for stainless steel, 1,270 psi for aluminum)- Peel Strength: 110 to 128 N/cm (65-75 pli)- Mixed Viscosity: Thixotropic paste- Shelf Life: 9 months to 1 year
Surface Compatibility
- Steel- Aluminum- Stainless Steel- Galvanized Steel- Wood- Glass- ABS- Concrete- Urethanes- Composites- Primed or painted metal, ceramic, rubber, paper, leather, and many fabrics (general urethane adhesive compatibility)- Thermoplastic, thermoset plastics, fiber-reinforced plastic, polycarbonate, and PVC (general urethane adhesive compatibility)
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other two-part urethane adhesives with comparable properties.- Epoxy adhesives, though urethanes generally offer more flexibility and vibration resistance, while epoxies are typically stiffer and provide higher mechanical resistance.- Thermosetting acrylics and cyanoacrylates, where urethanes often provide superior toughness.- High-bond structural tapes, which can serve as an alternative to traditional fastening methods.
Comparison Note
Devcon Dev-Thane 5 is a two-part urethane adhesive distinguished by its excellent balance of high strength and flexibility. This makes it particularly well-suited for applications that require significant vibration absorption, resistance to thermal expansion, and the ability to bond dissimilar materials effectively. When compared to epoxy adhesives, Dev-Thane 5 typically offers greater flexibility and peel strength, whereas epoxies are generally known for higher shear strength and rigidity. A key advantage of this product is its primerless application on many substrates, which streamlines the bonding process and reduces preparation time.
