Product Name
- ASI 174 White Silicon/Latex Sealant For Construction & Industrial Use by American Sealants Inc (5.5oz Squeezable Tube)
Brief Description
- ASI 174 Siliconized Acrylic Latex is a high-performance, paintable sealant designed for both interior and exterior joints.- It cures to form a strong, flexible, and watertight seal, offering resistance to oxidation, UV degradation, and cold temperatures.- This sealant is based on a 100% acrylic emulsion, modified with special additives for enhanced durability and a long life expectancy.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Sealing interior and exterior joints.- Bathroom installation and sealing (e.g., tubs, tiles, sinks).- Window and door interior and exterior sealing.- Sealing around countertops, trimwork, and cabinets.- General construction and sealing applications.- Portable housing interior applications.- Filling gaps and cracks, especially prior to painting.- Sealing expansion joints between prefabricated building elements.- Assembly of wood, PVC, iron, and aluminum joinery.- Plastering of joinery and sealing of joints.- Combination of eternit, aluminum roof, and facade cladding plates.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Construction/ Building Services- Cabinet & Woodworking- Countertop- Metal Fabrication (for bonding to some metals)- Plastic Fabrication (for bonding to some plastics)- Concrete- Prosumer (DIY applications)- Cladding- PVC Trimboard- Commercial Door
Special and Unique Features
- Mold & Mildew Resistant When Cured.- Non-Sag, suitable for vertical or overhead joints.- Resistant to UV Degradation and Weathering.- Bonds to most common building materials.- Easy to use with water clean-up.- Paintable with most latex and oil-based paints.- Cures to form a strong, flexible, and watertight seal.- Expands and contracts with paint.- Good adhesion.- Non-yellowing.- Solvent-free and VOC compliant.- Will not crack.- Tack-free in 30 minutes to 1 hour.- Withstands +12.5% joint movement.
Key Properties
- Composition: Siliconized Acrylic Latex (100% acrylic emulsion with silicone additives).- Viscosity: 679,000 cps (Spindle 7, 4rpm).- Skin Formation Time: 60 minutes (70°F, 50% RH).- Density: 9 lbs./gal.- Hardness: 50 (Shore A).- Percentage Solids: 61%.- Elongation at Break: 600%.- Gun Grade: Pass (Non-Slump).- QUV Testing: Pass (4,000 hrs).- Service Temperature: -20°F to 180°F.- Curing: Water evaporation, cures quickly to a strong, flexible seal. Full cure time varies with environmental conditions.- Life Expectancy: Optimal life expectancy, some sources mention 25 years exterior life expectancy.- VOC Compliant.- Meets ASTM C834 (Clear).- Meets ASTM C920, Class 12.5; TT-S-00230C Class B (White).
Surface Compatibility
- Ceramics.- Glass.- Granite.- Marble.- Some Metals (e.g., aluminum).- Most Woods (painted & unpainted).- Some Plastics (e.g., vinyl, PVC).- Porcelain.- Porous Surfaces (Concrete, Brick, Stucco, Mortar, Plaster, Drywall, Fiber cement, Ytong).- Can be used primerless on most common building materials.- Surfaces should be dry and clean; 100% IPA or acetone can be used for cleaning. Do not use petroleum-based solvents.- Allow treated wood & asphalt to cure 6 months before application. Allow new concrete to cure 30 days before applying sealant.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Acrylic Caulk: Versatile, easy to apply, quick curing, paintable, good adhesion to wood, drywall, plaster. May not hold up as well in extreme temperatures or prolonged moisture.- Polyurethane Caulk/Sealant: Highly durable, flexible, strong, weather-resistant, can achieve similar strengths to MS polymer sealants, good for outdoor applications, can be paintable. May contain isocyanates which can be irritant.- Epoxy Adhesives: Heavy-duty bonding capabilities.- Butyl Rubber Sealants: Exceptional weather resistance and durability, good for outdoor applications (roofing, gutters, windows). Less flexible than silicone or polyurethane.- Hybrid Sealants (e.g., MS Polymer Sealants): Combine benefits of polyurethane and silicone, offering durability, paintability, weathering, and UV resistance. Often have higher performance than silicone sealants, good UV resistance, high strength, and can be painted.- 100% Silicone Sealants: Superior water resistance, extreme durability, flexible and resilient, ideal for high-moisture areas (bathrooms, kitchens), windows, doors, and outdoor projects. Generally not paintable.
Comparison Note
- ASI 174 is a siliconized acrylic latex sealant, offering a balance between the ease of use and paintability of acrylic latex and the enhanced flexibility, adhesion, and water resistance provided by silicone additives.- Unlike 100% silicone sealants, which are typically not paintable, ASI 174 can be painted with both latex and oil-based paints, allowing for a seamless finish.- It provides better flexibility and water resistance than pure acrylic latex caulk, while being easier to clean up with water than pure silicone.- It is designed for both interior and exterior applications, offering good resistance to UV degradation and weathering, which is a key advantage over basic acrylic caulks.
