Understanding Epoxy Adhesives
Epoxy adhesives are part of the class of adhesives called "structural adhesives," which include polyurethane, acrylic, cyanoacrylate and others. Epoxies are formulated as liquid reactive polymers that undergo a chemical reaction when mixed and then cure to form a solid plastic material. Once the two parts are mixed in their specified ratio, they begin the curing process and offer a limited working time where the adhesive can be applied and the two surfaces positioned as needed. This work life lasts anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. These structural adhesives provide high shear and peel strengths, depending on the formula, and better heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. In general, epoxy adhesives have the highest overall strength and offer the best performance and most resistance to high temperatures, solvents and outdoor weathering.
Epoxy adhesive (often referred to as epoxy glue) is widely used in building and home construction; aircraft and automobile manufacturing; bicycle, boat, golf clubs, ski and snowboard assembly as well as a host of home use and other applications. It is used virtually anywhere high-strength bonds are needed along with resistance to environmental conditions. These adhesives are popular for their ease of use, mechanical strength and chemical resistance. Formulations can be created to make epoxy for plastic flexible or epoxy for metal rigid, epoxy resin transparent or opaque, quick setting or slow setting. The versatility with which these adhesives can be formulated helps meet almost any requirement for bonding wood, metal, glass, stone and various plastics.

- Ceramics
- Wood and Fiberboard
- Glass
- Rubber
- Many Plastics
Known backups / known substitutes
- 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive 2216: The DP190 Translucent shares a similar base and accelerator with 3M Scotch-Weld 2216 B/A Translucent but offers faster curing. The DP190 Gray version is a 1:1 mix ratio equivalent of 2216 B/A Gray.
- UltraLok 54190: Offered by Chemical Concepts Inc. as a direct alternative, this epoxy is designed for bonding metals, ceramics, and many plastics, featuring good vibration and impact resistance, a 1:1 mix ratio, and room temperature curing.
- Other Structural Adhesives: While epoxies generally provide the highest overall strength and resistance to high temperatures, solvents, and outdoor weathering, other structural adhesive classes like polyurethanes, acrylics, and cyanoacrylates can serve as alternatives depending on specific application requirements.
Comparison Note
The 3M Scotch-Weld DP190 Translucent stands out with its extended 80-minute work life, providing a significant advantage for applications requiring careful alignment and adjustment of components, unlike many faster-setting epoxies. Its translucent finish is a key differentiator, making it suitable for aesthetic applications where an invisible bond line is crucial. This contrasts with the DP190 Gray version, which offers a higher modulus and a faster full cure time (7 days versus 14 days for translucent). Although it shares a similar chemical base with 3M Scotch-Weld 2216, the DP190 is conveniently packaged in a 1:1 Duo-Pak, simplifying mixing and dispensing. The combination of high shear and peel strength, flexibility, and environmental resistance positions it as a versatile and reliable choice for demanding industrial and assembly tasks where both robust bonding and visual appeal are important considerations.
