Odorless Mineral Spirits is a premium, highly refined solvent formula which effectively thins and blends well into oil-based paint, stain and varnish. It is very low odor and dries with minimal residue, so it is an excellent cleaner for paint brushes, tools and equipment immediately after use. Not intended for sale or use in California. Our solvents and thinners are mixed into wet paint, varnish, stain and other finishes to weaken consistency and thin them out. They're also great for clean up; like elbow grease in a can. They're formulated for professional use to strip years of old paint, clean up heavy-duty spills, and give homes a second chance.
Product Name
Quality Aerosols Mineral Spirits QUA01000 - 5 Gal
Brief Description
Quality Aerosols Mineral Spirits QUA01000 is a petroleum-derived clear liquid, primarily composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons, serving as a versatile organic solvent. It is widely recognized as a paint thinner for oil-based paints, a powerful degreaser, and an effective general-purpose cleaner for various industrial and household applications.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Thinning oil-based paints, varnishes, and stains for smoother application.- Cleaning paint brushes, rollers, and other painting equipment.- Degreasing automotive parts, bicycle gears, tools, and industrial machinery.- Removing tough grease, grime, and sticky adhesive residues from various surfaces.- Cleaning and restoring wood furniture and surfaces without raising the grain.- Preparing surfaces in industrial settings for painting or welding.- Spot cleaning scuff marks from floors made of linoleum, wood, laminate, tile, and vinyl.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- **Artist, Artisan:** For thinning oil paints and cleaning art tools.- **Automotive Service/Repair:** Essential for degreasing engine components, brakes, and other intricate parts.- **Chemical Industry:** Used as an organic solvent in the formulation of aerosols, paints, wood preservatives, lacquers, varnishes, and asphalt products.- **Construction/Building Services:** For paint thinning, equipment cleaning, and surface preparation on job sites.- **Distributers & Resellers:** Supplied in bulk (5-gallon pails) for distribution to various industrial and commercial clients.- **General Manufacturing:** Utilized for cleaning machinery, degreasing parts, and general maintenance.- **Industrial Supply:** A core product for industrial cleaning, thinning, and surface preparation needs.- **Metal Fabrication:** Instrumental in degreasing metal surfaces before painting or welding.
Special and Unique Features
- More refined than typical paint thinners, leading to fewer impurities.- Generally has a milder odor compared to less refined paint thinners, making it more pleasant for indoor use.- Slower evaporation rate allows for smoother paint application and finish.- Effective for thinning oil-based paints and varnishes without significantly altering their properties.- Acts as an excellent degreaser for metal and industrial equipment.
Key Properties
- **Composition:** Petroleum-derived, primarily aliphatic hydrocarbons (C7 to C12).- **Boiling Point:** Ranges between 150°C to 200°C.- **Flash Point:** Typically around 38°C, indicating a lower flammability risk compared to some other solvents like acetone.- **Odor:** Mild, especially in refined versions, due to the lack of aromatic compounds.- **Solvency:** Moderate solvency, suitable for thinning and cleaning.- **Toxicity:** Lower toxicity due to fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aromatics compared to less refined paint thinners.- **Water Solubility:** Insoluble in water.
Surface Compatibility
- **Metals:** Ideal for degreasing automotive parts, tools, and industrial equipment.- **Wood:** Safe for cleaning and restoring wood surfaces, does not raise the grain.- **Oil-based Paints, Stains, Varnishes:** Designed for thinning and cleaning these finishes.- **Flooring:** Can be used to clean scuff marks off linoleum, laminate, tile, and vinyl floors (test in an inconspicuous area first).- **Plastics:** Can remove adhesive residue from non-porous plastic surfaces (test first).
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Paint Thinner:** A broader category that often includes less refined mineral spirits, turpentine, acetone, or naphtha. Generally less expensive but may have a stronger odor and faster evaporation.- **Turpentine:** A natural solvent derived from pine trees, stickier, and can dissolve more solutions, but often has a stronger odor and is more toxic.- **Acetone:** A powerful, fast-evaporating solvent with a strong odor, highly flammable, used for thinning lacquers and dissolving dry oil paint.- **Naphtha:** Another petroleum-derived solvent, often found in some paint thinners.- **Denatured Alcohol:** Effective for cleaning but generally not suitable for thinning paints.- **Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol):** A safer alternative for cleaning brushes and surfaces, also used as a disinfectant.- **Eco-friendly Solvents:** Various green cleaning solutions are designed to replace traditional mineral spirits with lower VOCs and reduced hazards.- **Oil, Soap, and Water:** A gentler, non-chemical option for cleaning paint brushes and some surfaces.
Comparison Note
Quality Aerosols Mineral Spirits QUA01000 stands out from generic paint thinners due to its higher refinement, resulting in a milder odor and fewer impurities. While both serve to thin oil-based paints and clean tools, mineral spirits offer a slower evaporation rate, contributing to a smoother finish and a more pleasant working environment, especially indoors. It provides a balanced solvency, making it effective for a wide range of cleaning and thinning tasks without being overly aggressive.
