- Shape Options are:
- Round 1/8 inch (3mm), 5/32 inch (4mm), and 3/16 inch (5mm)
- Triangle 7/32 inch (5.7mm)
- Flat 1/16 x 5/8 (1.6mm x 16mm)
- Packaging Options are:
- Rods come in packs of 10, 20 & 40 Rods each
- Coils come in 100-ft (approx 1/2 pound) and 200-ft (approx 1 pound)
- Reels come in 500ft (aapprox 2.5 Lbs), 10-Lbs, 20-Lbs, and 50-Lbs
Made of 100% pure LDPE plastic (High Density Polyethylene), no impurities. All Plastic Rods, Coils & Reels should be used with an appropriate plastic welding iron, heat dispenser or torch with applicable attachments.
LDPE Rods, Coils & Reels can be used for several popular types of repair jobs, but each plastic repair job needs to be carefully matched to the same type of Plastic Rod or Coil. Repair jobs can include windshield washer bottles, radiator overflow tanks, variety of gas tanks, fender repairs (popular for Off-Road, ATV, dirt bikes, motocross), variety of water tanks, kayaks, canoes, and agricultural water/fertilizer tanks.
These Rods, Coils & Reels are LDPE Polyethylene Plastic.
Warning: Mixing different types of plastics will likely result in poor quality repairs and poor longevity of the welds. Quite Simply, match your plastics and you're good... different plastics simply don't work well together.
Because Polyethylene is very stable (meaning few things will react with it), it is almost impossible to get quality repairs using adhesives, and also why it is used to contain chemicals (gasoline, pesticides, etc.) that would react with other plastics. Welding is the best repair method for polyethylene.
LDPE Rods, Coils & Reels: Use with any plastic labeled Recycling # 2. Also typically includes Plastic Barrels, Chemical Resistant Containers, Plastic Dustbins, Chemical-resistant pipes, plastic carrying cartons
Product Name
Maven Plastics - LDPE Natural (Mildly-Translucent White) Plastic Welding Rods, Coils & Reels
Brief Description
These are low-density polyethylene (LDPE) welding rods, available in a natural (mildly-translucent white) color, and supplied in various forms including rods, coils, or reels. They are specifically designed for plastic welding applications, primarily for joining or repairing LDPE plastics, and are also compatible with HDPE in certain welding scenarios.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Repair of plastic tanks, including water, gas, and agricultural fertilizer tanks.- Repair of kayaks, canoes, and other marine vessels.- Repair of automotive and RV PE parts, such as fluid reservoirs and inner fender liners.- Fabrication and repair of bins, liners, laboratory vessels, and cutting boards.- General plastic fabrication and repair where flexibility, toughness, and chemical resistance are required.- Construction of plastic pipes and aquaculture components.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Plastic Fabrication- Automotive Service/Repair- Marine- General Manufacturing- Chemical Industry- Construction/ Building Services- Distributers & Resellers- Prosumer
Special and Unique Features
- Supplied in natural (mildly-translucent white) color, allowing for less visible repairs on similarly colored plastics.- Available in rods, coils, and reels for various application needs and convenience.- Known for low-temperature flexibility and impact resistance.- Good resistance to chemical attack, including mineral lubricants, aliphatic hydrocarbons, gasoline, mineral acids, alkalis, and alcohols.- Ease of fabrication and cost-effectiveness.- Can be welded to HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) base material, though HDPE cannot be used to repair LDPE.
Key Properties
- Material: Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)- Color: Natural (Mildly-Translucent White)- Flexibility: High- Toughness: High- Chemical Resistance: Good resistance to many chemicals, acids, alkalis, and alcohols.- Corrosion Resistance: Yes- Impact Resistance: High ductility and impact strength.- Water Absorption: Low- Machinability: Yes- Melting Point: Approximately 130°C to 145°C (266°F to 293°F).- Continuous Use Temperature: Max. -80°C to +70°C.- Electrical Insulation: Good electrical insulation properties.- Sliding Properties: Good.- Stiffness/Strength: Low strength, hardness, and stiffness compared to other plastics.- Transparency: Translucent.- Susceptibility: Susceptible to stress cracking from UV light and some chemicals, especially wetting agents.
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily compatible with Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastics.- Can be welded to High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) base materials.- It is critical to match the welding rod material to the base plastic material for a strong, consistent weld; different plastic types are generally not cross-compatible.
Known backups / known substitutes
- HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) Welding Rods: Used for welding HDPE, which has higher stiffness and strength.- PP (Polypropylene) Welding Rods: Offers excellent chemical resistance, low specific gravity, and high tensile strength, used for different applications.- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Welding Rods: Used for plumbing, drainage, and electrical insulation, known for durability and weathering resistance.- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) Welding Rods: Offers high strength and resilience, used in automotive and consumer goods.- LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene) Welding Rods: Another form of polyethylene, often used where higher tensile strength or puncture resistance is needed compared to LDPE.- Adhesives: For some plastic repairs, especially thermoset plastics which cannot be welded, or when welding is not feasible.
Comparison Note
LDPE welding rods are distinct from other plastic welding rods (like HDPE, PP, PVC, ABS) primarily due to their lower density, higher flexibility, and specific chemical resistance profile. While LDPE rods can be used to weld to HDPE, the reverse is not true due to density differences affecting the breakdown of components during welding. LDPE is not suitable for applications requiring high stiffness, high-temperature resistance, or structural strength, where HDPE or other engineering plastics might be preferred. It is crucial to match the welding rod to the parent material for optimal weld quality and longevity.
