Product Name
3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 Black Glue for Polyethylene PE, Polypropylene PP, and TPO Soft Rubbery Plastics (PE, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PPCO, PPHO)
Brief Description
3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 Black is a two-part acrylic-based structural adhesive specifically formulated to create strong, durable bonds on challenging low surface energy (LSE) plastics, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and thermoplastic polyolefins, without the need for extensive surface preparation like priming or etching. It is also capable of bonding dissimilar substrates such as plastics to metals, composites, ceramics, and wood.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding low surface energy plastics (PE, PP, TPO, TPEs) to themselves and to other materials like metals, composites, ceramics, and wood.- Replacing mechanical fasteners such as screws and rivets.- Eliminating the need for plastic welding in many applications.- Appliance manufacturing and repair.- Repair of sporting goods and equipment.- Impact-resistant composite bonding.- Assembly of small joints.- Structural assembly of polyolefins.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/ Building Services- Electronics- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Sign & Display- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Bonds low surface energy plastics (polypropylene, polyethylene, TPO/TPEs) without special surface preparation (no primer needed).- Ability to bond dissimilar substrates, including plastics to metals and composites.- Cures at room temperature.- Excellent resistance to water, humidity, and various chemicals.- Solvent-free adhesive system.- One-step bonding process, simplifying application.- Contains 0.008-inch glass beads for controlled bondline thickness.- Medium viscosity allows for controlled dispensing and good surface wet-out.
Key Properties
- Adhesive Type: Two-part acrylic- Mix Ratio by Volume (B:A): 10:1- Work Life: 2.5 - 3 minutes- Time to Handling Strength: 2 - 3 hours- Time to Full Cure: 8 - 24 hours- Cured Color: Black- Viscosity: Medium- Shore D Hardness: 60- Shear Strength: 2,000 psi
Surface Compatibility
- Polyethylene (PE, HDPE, LDPE)- Polypropylene (PP, PPCO, PPHO)- Thermoplastic Polyolefins (TPO)- Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs)- Metals- Composites- Ceramics- Wood- Most other plastics
Known backups / known substitutes
- 3M Scotch-Weld Structural Plastic Adhesive DP8005 Off-White/Translucent (same formulation, different color).- 3M Scotch-Weld DP8010NS Blue (non-sag version for vertical applications).- Other structural acrylic adhesives designed for LSE plastics.- Cyanoacrylate adhesives (super glues) with specific primers for polyolefins.- Epoxy or polyurethane adhesives (generally require surface treatment for LSE plastics).- Mechanical fasteners (screws, rivets) or plastic welding, which DP8005 is designed to replace.
Comparison Note
3M Scotch-Weld DP8005 Black stands out from many conventional adhesives by providing strong, structural bonds on notoriously difficult-to-bond low surface energy plastics (like PE and PP) without requiring costly and time-consuming surface preparation steps such as chemical etching, plasma, flame, corona treatment, or priming. This one-step process simplifies manufacturing and repair, offering a robust alternative to mechanical fastening and plastic welding.
