Polyolefins, thermoplastic polyesters, fluorocarbon plastics and other low surface energy plastics are generally not bondable with SG300 series. Prepare metal by removing dust, loose scale, rust and other surface residue including oil and grease. For maximum bond strength on steel, abrade surface prior to bonding.
Product Name
SciGrip SG300-B-40 Black Slow Set 40-Minute High Strength Toughened 490ml 10:1 MMA Methacrylate Adhesive
Brief Description
This product is a two-component, 10:1 mix ratio, black methyl methacrylate (MMA) structural adhesive from the SCIGRIP SG300 series. It is formulated for high strength and toughness, offering a slow set time of 40 minutes, which is ideal for applications requiring extended working time for assembly or positioning. It is designed to bond a wide range of materials, including metals, composites, and various thermoplastics, often without the need for extensive surface preparation or primers.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding metals and plastics in various assemblies- Replacing mechanical fasteners and welding joints in structural applications- Strengthening side and roof panels, door panels, and aerodynamic components for trucks and construction equipment- Bonding hulls, deck liners, ski boats, yachts, and internal fixtures for watercraft- Joining aluminum panels in various contexts- Bonding magnets in loudspeaker and electric motor manufacturing- Attaching panels, brackets, and performing general metal bonding in automotive and transport- Bonding fiberglass and composite materials- Joining ABS, acrylic, PVC, or polycarbonate in plastic fabrication- Bonding acrylic panels, frames, and metal supports in signage and displays
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/ Building Services (e.g., bonding aluminum composite panels)- Fabrication (general, metal, and plastic)- General Manufacturing- Marine- Metal Fabrication (e.g., joining aluminum, steel, powder-coated parts)- Plastic Fabrication (e.g., joining ABS, acrylic, PVC, polycarbonate)- Sign & Display- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle (e.g., trucks, buses, rail)
Special and Unique Features
- **Slow Set 40-Minute Working Time:** Provides an extended open time (35-45 minutes) for larger assemblies or complex positioning, allowing for careful alignment before curing begins.- **High Strength & Toughened Formula:** Delivers robust, load-bearing bonds with excellent resistance to shear, peel, and impact stresses.- **Primerless Metal Bonding:** Bonds most metals without the need for primers, simplifying surface preparation and improving efficiency.- **Reduced Bond Line Read-Through:** Minimizes the visibility of adhesive lines on show surfaces, contributing to a cleaner, more aesthetic finish.- **Non-Sag Application:** High viscosity ensures the adhesive stays in place, making it suitable for vertical or inverted applications.- **Excellent Environmental & Chemical Resistance:** Maintains strong, permanent bonds even in harsh operating conditions and against various chemicals.
Key Properties
- **Adhesive Type:** Two-component MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) Structural Adhesive- **Color:** Black- **Mix Ratio (Volume):** 10:1 (Adhesive to Activator)- **Working Time:** 35-45 minutes- **Fixture Time:** 80-90 minutes (time to achieve 80% of ultimate strength)- **Tensile Strength:** 1,700 - 2,200 psi (12 - 15 MPa)- **Shear Strength:** 2,300 - 2,800 psi (16 - 19 MPa)- **Maximum Tensile Elongation:** >40%- **Gap Fill:** 0.02 - 0.375 inches (0.50 - 9.5 mm)- **Cure Mechanism:** Room temperature exothermic polymerization reaction
Surface Compatibility
This adhesive is highly versatile and bonds well to a wide range of substrates, including:- **Metals:** Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Coated Metals (most metals without primer)- **Composites:** Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber, Thermoset Composites (Vinylester, Polyester, Gelcoats, Epoxy, Sheet Molding Compound)- **Thermoplastics:** ABS, Acrylics, PVC/CPVC, Styrenics, Polycarbonates- **Other:** Glass, Wood, Magnets**Note:** Polyolefins, thermoplastic polyesters, fluorocarbon plastics, and other low surface energy plastics are generally not bondable with this series.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Other MMA Adhesives:** Brands like 3M, Infinity Bond, Plexus, and Sika offer various MMA formulations.- **Epoxy Adhesives:** While also structural, epoxies generally offer higher tensile and shear strength and superior heat/chemical resistance, but are typically more brittle, require more surface preparation, and have longer cure times.- **Polyurethane Adhesives:** These are also structural adhesives but often require extensive surface preparation and priming.
Comparison Note
The SciGrip SG300-B-40 stands out among structural adhesives due to its unique combination of high strength, rubber-toughened flexibility, and a generous 40-minute working time. Unlike many epoxies, it offers excellent impact and peel strength, can bond dissimilar materials, and requires minimal surface preparation for most metals. Its slow set allows for greater precision and assembly of larger or more complex components, a key advantage over faster-curing MMAs or epoxies. While epoxies might offer higher ultimate tensile strength and heat resistance in some formulations, the SG300-B-40 provides a balanced profile of toughness, flexibility, and ease of use, making it a versatile choice for demanding applications where reduced bond line read-through and primerless metal bonding are critical.
