Polyolefins, thermoplastic polyesters, fluorocarbon plastics and other low surface energy plastics are generally not bondable with SG300 series. Prepare metal by removing dust, loose scale, rust and other surface residue including oil and grease. For maximum bond strength on steel, abrade surface prior to bonding.
Product Name
SciGrip SG300-B-15 Black 15-minute High Strength Toughened 490ml 10:1 MMA Methacrylate Adhesive
Brief Description
This is a two-component, 10:1 mix ratio Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) structural adhesive, formulated in black, offering a 15-minute working time. It is engineered for high strength and toughened performance, making it ideal for robust bonding of metals, composites, and various plastic parts.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Structural bonding applications, often replacing mechanical fasteners and welding joints.- Bonding dissimilar materials like metal to plastic or composites.- Production lines due to its fast cure speed.- Bonding panels for trucks and construction equipment, including side and roof panels, door panels, and aerodynamic components.- Electric motor manufacturing for bonding magnets to metal housings.- Composite bonding for truck trailer beds, fenders, stiffeners to door panels, and sliding roofs.- Marine applications such as bonding hulls, deck liners, ski boats, yachts, internal fixtures, canoes, kayaks, and marine window bonding.- Signage and displays, including bonding acrylic panels, frames, and metal supports.- Automotive panel bonding.- Rail carriage applications, including vertical and horizontal surfaces, cavities, dashboards, luggage storage compartments, and gangways.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/ Building Services- Energy (e.g., electric motor manufacturing)- General Manufacturing (for industrial manufacturing and assembly operations)- Marine- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Sign & Display- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- 15-minute working time, allowing for precise application and assembly.- Reduced bond line read-through, enhancing aesthetic finish on show surfaces.- Primerless bonding for most metals, simplifying surface preparation.- High viscosity for non-slump application, suitable for vertical and overhead bonding.- High impact strength and fatigue endurance, providing durable and resilient bonds.- Fast cure system, enabling quicker production cycles.- Permanent toughness, maintaining bond integrity under stress.- Ability to bond dissimilar materials with different flexibility.- Good chemical resistance.- Gap-filling capability to accommodate irregular surfaces.
Key Properties
- **Adhesive Type:** Two-component MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) Methacrylate Adhesive- **Mix Ratio (by volume):** 10:1 (Adhesive to Activator)- **Color (Cured):** Black- **Working Time:** 13-17 minutes (nominal 15 minutes)- **Fixture Time:** 30-40 minutes (time to achieve 80% of ultimate strength)- **Viscosity:** High (Non-slump)- **Tensile Strength:** > 12 MPa (> 1700 psi)- **Tensile Modulus:** > 276 MPa- **Service Temperature:** -40°F to 180°F (-40°C to 82°C)- **Chemical Resistance:** Excellent
Surface Compatibility
- **Bonds Well With:** - Metals: Aluminum, Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Coated Metals. - Composites: Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber, Unsaturated Polyester, Vinyl Ester, Gel-coats, Sheet Molding Compound (SMC), Epoxy. - Thermoplastics: ABS, Acrylics, Polycarbonates, PVC/CPVC, Styrenics.- **Generally Not Bondable With:** Polyolefins, thermoplastic polyesters, fluorocarbon plastics, and other low surface energy plastics.- **Surface Preparation:** Minimal surface preparation is required. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dust, loose scale, rust, oil, and grease. Abrading steel surfaces is recommended for maximum bond strength.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Other SCIGRIP SG300 series MMA adhesives (e.g., SG300-05 for faster cure, SG300-40 for longer working time), offering similar properties with varied work/fixture times.- Epoxy adhesives, though MMAs generally offer superior flexibility, toughness, and ability to bond dissimilar materials.- Traditional mechanical fasteners (bolts, screws) or welding, which this adhesive is designed to replace for improved aesthetics, reduced weight, and enhanced durability.
Comparison Note
SciGrip SG300-B-15 MMA adhesive provides significant advantages over traditional bonding methods and other adhesive types. Unlike many epoxies, MMAs offer greater flexibility and toughness, making them less prone to cracking under impact or vibration and more effective at bonding dissimilar materials. They also require less extensive surface preparation and cure rapidly at room temperature, boosting industrial productivity. When compared to mechanical fasteners or welding, this adhesive reduces labor, lowers overall weight, resists corrosion, effectively fills gaps, and delivers a cleaner, more professional finish. The SG300-B-15 variant offers a balanced 15-minute working time, suitable for a wide range of assembly operations, distinguishing it from faster or slower curing options within the SG300 series. However, it is not specifically formulated for applications exposed to extreme temperatures (beyond -40 to 180 °F) or for continuous below-the-waterline use.
