Product Name
Permabond UV610 UV translucent glue for Glass and Metals
Brief Description
Permabond UV610 is a single-part, fast-setting, UV-curable adhesive specifically engineered for high-strength bonding of glass and metal. It cures rapidly upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, providing a clear, strong, and durable bond.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding glass furniture, including the creation of high-strength edge joints.- General glass-to-metal assembly in various manufacturing processes.- Architectural and interior design applications such as bonding glass partitions, railings, and shower enclosures to metal frames or fixtures.- Potting and tacking applications in the electronics industry.- Assembly of decorative items and for creative endeavors involving glass and metal.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Furniture- General Manufacturing- Metal Fabrication- LED/Electronics- Construction/Building Services- Sign & Display- Artist, Artisan- Distributers & Resellers
Special and Unique Features
- Cures on demand when exposed to UV light, allowing for precise positioning before hardening.- Exhibits high shear strength, ensuring robust and lasting bonds.- Achieves fast curing times, even with low-power UV lamps, enhancing production efficiency.- Formulated with 100% solids and no solvents, contributing to environmental benefits and reduced shrinkage.- Cures to an optically clear, non-yellowing finish, crucial for aesthetic applications.- Provides excellent adhesion to both metal and glass substrates.- Capable of withstanding higher temperatures for brief periods, such as during paint baking and wave soldering processes, provided the joint is not unduly stressed.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Methacrylate ester.- Appearance: Translucent.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 600-1300 mPa.s (cP) or 800-1000 mPa.s (cP), indicating a medium viscosity.- Specific gravity: Approximately 1.0 to 1.1.- Tensile strength (steel to glass): 13-16 N/mm² (1900-2300 psi).- Tensile strength (ISO37): 17 N/mm² (2500 psi).- Refractive index (cured): >1.490.- Elongation (ISO37): 95-96%.- Hardness (ISO868): 65-75 Shore D.- Dielectric strength: 12 KV/mm.- Dielectric constant 1MHz@25°C: 4.- Water absorption (ISO62) 2 hours in boiling water: 3%.- Optimal cure wavelength: 365 - 400 nm.- Typical fixture time (low power 4mW/cm² lamp): 10-11 seconds.- Operating temperature range for cured adhesive: -55°C to 120°C, with brief tolerance for higher temperatures.
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for bonding glass and various metals, including steel, aluminum, copper, and their alloys.- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of grease before adhesive application.- Special care should be taken to remove silicone-based cleaning agents from glass surfaces.- Light abrasion with emery cloth can improve adhesion on some metals (e.g., aluminum, copper) by removing oxide layers.- Isopropanol is recommended for degreasing most surfaces.- For thermoplastic surfaces, compatibility tests are advised.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond UV620: An alternative offering excellent optical clarity.- Permabond UV625: A thixotropic gel suitable for vertical surfaces or applications with large gaps.- Permabond UV630 or UV632: Designed specifically for bonding plastics.- Permabond UV7141: Features a dual UV/anaerobic cure mechanism for bonding in shadow areas.- Loctite 349: An acrylic, high-viscosity UV light-cure adhesive for glass-to-glass and glass-to-metal applications.- Other UV-curable adhesives from manufacturers like Incure or Dymax, which offer similar glass-to-metal bonding capabilities.- Epoxy adhesives such as 3M Scotch-Weld DP110 or Permabond ET500, though these are not UV-cured.
Comparison Note
Permabond UV610 is specifically formulated to provide structural strength for glass-to-metal bonds, setting it apart from other UV adhesives that might prioritize optical clarity (e.g., Permabond UV620) or suitability for vertical applications and gap filling (e.g., Permabond UV625). Its composition of 100% solids with no solvents, combined with its rapid cure time under UV light, offers significant advantages in applications where both aesthetic quality and production efficiency are paramount, surpassing many traditional adhesive solutions.
