Permabond® POP Polyolefin Primer has been developed for surface treatment of polyolefins, PTFE and silicones prior to bonding with Permabond® Cyanoacrylate adhesives. Due to their low surface energy, plastics such as PTFE (DuPont Teflon), Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE) and Silicones are difficult to bond without special surface treatment. However, after treatment with Permabond® POP Polyolefin Primer, durable bonds stronger than the substrate material can be achieved.
Permabond POP enhances adhesion to polyolefins.

Product Name
Permabond POP Plastics Primer for Superglue & Instant CA Adhesives (for bonding with Polyolefins, PTFE, Polyethylene, Polypropylene, and Difficult Plastics)
Brief Description
Permabond POP Polyolefin Primer is a specialized surface treatment designed to enable strong and durable bonding of low surface energy plastics, such as polyolefins (polypropylene, polyethylene), PTFE (Teflon), and silicones, with cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesives (superglues). These plastics are typically difficult to bond without special surface preparation due to their non-polar nature. The primer modifies the surface structure, allowing CA adhesives to achieve bonds often stronger than the substrate material itself.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Enhancing adhesion of instant adhesives to difficult-to-bond plastics.- Bonding polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) components.- Securing PTFE (Teflon) parts with CA adhesives.- Attaching silicone materials where cyanoacrylate bonding is desired.- Repair and assembly of products containing low surface energy plastics in manufacturing and service environments.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing- Plastic Fabrication- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Automotive Service/Repair- Aerospace/Defense- LED/Electronics- Prosumer (for advanced DIY or small-scale professional applications)- Distributers & Resellers- Chemical Industry- Engineering Services
Special and Unique Features
- Specifically formulated to enable strong bonding of low surface energy plastics with cyanoacrylate adhesives.- Eliminates the need for more complex and costly mechanical surface treatments like plasma, flame, or corona treatment.- Achieves durable bonds that are often stronger than the plastic substrate itself.- Colourless liquid appearance, maintaining aesthetic integrity.- Features UV-fluorescence for easy inspection of primer application.- Fast drying time, typically around 30 seconds, speeding up assembly processes.- One-part, solvent-based liquid for ease of application.- ISO 10993-5 Cytotoxicity certified, indicating suitability for certain medical device applications.
Key Properties
- Appearance: Colourless Liquid- Viscosity @ 25°C: 0.6 mPa.s (cP)- Specific Gravity: 0.7- Boiling Point: 98°C- Flash Point: -4°C- Evaporation Rate: 2.8 (butyl acetate = 1)- Drying Time @ 23°C: 30 Seconds- Effective bonding window: Up to 2 hours after treatment for polyolefins; immediate bonding recommended for PTFE.- Cure Method: Solvent, Room temperature- Durability: Durable bonds
Surface Compatibility
- Polyolefins (Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE))- PTFE (Teflon)- Silicones- Other low surface energy plastics- Also mentioned for PBT, Polystyrene, Polyurethane, FEP, ETFE, PMP, PFA, PPS, Fluoropolymers in general applications.
Known backups / known substitutes
- **Other Polyolefin Primers for CA Adhesives:** Weicon Contact Adhesive Primer for Polyolefins.- **Structural Acrylic Adhesives (often without primer):** Permabond TA4605, TA4610, TA4611, Infinity Bond MMA 500, Loctite AA 3035, Plexus MA8110, MA120. These are specifically designed for low surface energy plastics.- **Hot Melt Adhesives:** Super Tac 500 plastic glue for polyethylene and polypropylene.- **Epoxy Adhesives:** Special heat-cure epoxies for high-temperature resistant plastics (e.g., PEEK, PBT) or two-part epoxies for certain plastics.- **UV Curable Adhesives:** Effective for many plastics like ABS, Nylon, Phenolic, Polyamide, Polycarbonate, PVC.- **Welding Techniques:** Solvent, ultrasonic, or infrared welding for bonding polyethylene to itself in factory settings, often requiring pre-treatment like corona, plasma, or flame.
Comparison Note
The Permabond POP Plastics Primer offers a distinct advantage by enabling the use of readily available, fast-curing, and often cost-effective cyanoacrylate adhesives on plastics that are notoriously difficult to bond. While alternative adhesives like structural acrylics can bond these materials without a primer, they may involve different application methods (e.g., cartridge glue guns, static mixer nozzles), longer fixture times, or specific odor/flammability considerations. The primer provides a simple, wipe-on solution that allows for strong bonds, often exceeding the strength of the substrate, without the need for complex mechanical surface preparation.
