Product Name
Permabond Initiator 43 (for use with the TA series of Toughened structural acrylic adhesive)
Brief Description
Permabond Initiator 43 is a solvent-free, brush-on liquid adhesive activator designed to be used in conjunction with Permabond TA series structural acrylic adhesives. It functions as a no-mix resin and initiator system, facilitating the rapid curing and strong bonding of various substrates.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Used with Permabond TA (structural acrylic) adhesives.- Facilitates high-strength bonding of metals, ferrites, ceramics, and hard plastics.- Ideal for applications requiring high impact and high temperature resistance.- Magnet bonding, particularly for electric motors.- Plastic-to-metal bonding in automotive, appliances, and electronics.- Bonding polyolefin surfaces (e.g., polypropylene, polyethylene) without primer or surface treatment when used with specific TA adhesives (e.g., TA4610, TA4611).- Bonding dissimilar materials.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Construction/ Building Services- Electrical Services or Products (especially for sealed electric motors and sensitive electronic components)- Engineering Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- LED/Electronics- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Solvent-free formulation.- Allows for a long open time if required, or parts can be bonded immediately.- Brush-on liquid for quick and easy application.- Formulated to minimize attack and maximize performance on certain plastics.- Non-corrosive to sensitive copper parts or other electrically conductive surfaces (when used with specific TA adhesives like TA459).- Rapid cure and strength development.- Room temperature cure.
Key Properties
- Color: Green.- Viscosity: 10 mPa.s (10 cP).- Flashpoint: >90°C.- Specific Gravity: 1.0.- On-part life: 30 minutes.- Handling time (with Permabond TA436 at 23°C): <2 minutes for ~0mm gap, 10 minutes for 0.25mm gap, 20 minutes for 0.5mm gap.- Shelf Life: 12 months when stored in original unopened containers at 5 to 25°C.- Nonflammable.- Requires no drying time.
Surface Compatibility
- Metals- Ferrites- Ceramics- Hard plastics- Thermoplastics- Low surface energy plastics (e.g., polypropylene, polyethylene, HDPE, PTFE) when used with specific TA adhesives (e.g., TA4610, TA4611).- Composites- Rubbers (e.g., EPDM)- Glass- Wood- Dissimilar surfaces/materials.- Surfaces should be clean, dry, and grease-free for optimal bonding.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond Initiator 41 (used with TA430, TA435, TA437).- Permabond Initiator 44 (used with TA459).- Permabond Initiator 46 (used with TA4246).- Other structural acrylic adhesives or activators from Permabond or other manufacturers (e.g., 3M Scotch-Weld, Loctite).- Welding or brazing (Permabond structural acrylics are presented as an alternative).
Comparison Note
Permabond Initiator 43 is specifically designed to work with the Permabond TA series of toughened structural acrylic adhesives as a "no-mix" system, offering a balance of long open time and rapid cure. Other initiators (like 41, 44, 46) are formulated for different Permabond TA series adhesives or specific applications. For instance, some TA adhesives (e.g., TA4611) are designed to bond low surface energy plastics without primers and feature a 1:1 mix ratio. While some TA adhesives (e.g., TA437) can cure anaerobically without an initiator in close-fitting metal joints, the use of an initiator significantly accelerates the curing process.
