Product Name
PERMABOND ET536 Slow Set 50 - 80 min Dark Gray High Strength Chemical Resistant Epoxy
Brief Description
PERMABOND ET536 is a two-part, 1:1 mixable, toughened epoxy adhesive known for its high strength, excellent chemical resistance, and extended work life. It cures at room temperature and features a non-drip, thixotropic rheology, making it ideal for larger applications, gap filling, and vertical or inverted bonding.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding handles onto tools.- Aerospace structures.- Kitchen countertops, islands, ADA vanities, and shelving.- Motor housings and mounting brackets.- General assembly and construction.- Bonding and laminating metal-to-metal and metal-to-membrane in manufacturing.- Chemical tanks, piping, and processing plants.- Marine applications and protective metal coatings.- Gap filling and vertical/inverted applications due to its non-slump nature.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Construction/Building Services- Energy- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Marine- Medical Device/Prosthetics- Metal Fabrication- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Slow set time (50-80 minutes usable/pot life) allows for adjustment and suitability for larger applications.- Dark gray appearance.- High strength, including high peel and shear strength.- Excellent chemical resistance to solvents, fuels, acids, alkalis, oils, and water.- Toughened for good impact strength.- Thixotropic (non-drip/non-slump) rheology, suitable for gap filling and vertical applications.- Full cure at room temperature.- Easy to apply.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Epoxy Resin (A side), Polyamine Hardener (B side).- Mix Ratio by Volume: 1:1.- Appearance (Uncured): White (A side), Black (B side), resulting in Dark Gray when mixed.- Usable / Pot Life @23°C: 50-80 minutes.- Handling Time @23°C: 90-120 minutes.- Working Strength @23°C: 24 hours.- Full Cure @23°C: 72 hours.- Max Gap Fill: 5mm (0.2").- Shear Strength: 15 - 24 N/mm² (22-32 MPa / 3190-4640 psi).- Hardness: 75 Shore D.- Elongation: 10%.- Viscosity (Mixed): Thixotropic paste, 290,000 mPa.s (at 20 rpm), 50,000-100,000 mPa.s (20 rpm) / 150,000-300,000 mPa.s (2 rpm), 80,000 mPa.s (A side) / 500,000 mPa.s (B side).- Temperature Resistance: -40°C to +80°C.
Surface Compatibility
- Wood- Metal (e.g., aluminum, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper)- Ceramics- Some Plastics- Composites (e.g., carbon fiber, SMC)- Concrete
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond ET538: Also a toughened, thixotropic epoxy with excellent gap fill and flow control, but with a longer pot life (2-3 hours) for very large assemblies.- Permabond ET514: Toughened, impact resistant, high strength thixotropic paste with a handling time of 60-120 mins.- Other Permabond ET series epoxies may be considered depending on specific requirements (e.g., ET515 for clear and flexible, ET505 for general purpose).- General chemical-resistant epoxy adhesives from other manufacturers.
Comparison Note
PERMABOND ET536 offers a balance of extended work life, high strength, and excellent chemical resistance, making it suitable for applications requiring precise alignment over a longer period and exposure to harsh environments. Its thixotropic nature distinguishes it for vertical and gap-filling applications where slump is undesirable, compared to lower viscosity epoxies.
