Permabond ES558 single part epoxy adhesive is cured by oven, infra-red or induction heating. It is ideal for bonding and sealing metal components and can be applied to pre-assembled joints. When heated for curing, the adhesive flows like solder and wicks into small gaps where it will cure, forming a high strength durable bond.Permabond ES558 is often used instead of welding or brazing joints, simplifying production lines and reducing the hazards associated with labour-intensive welding processes. The adhesive provides 100% seal between components and provides better stress distribution, as well as giving an aesthetically pleasing finish. It is ideal for a wide range of applications and is particularly popular for sealing heat exchanger tubes.
EASY TO USE
Permabond ES558 comes in convenient 320ml cartridges which fit in a regular caulking gun or in bulk. The adhesive requires no measuring or mixing. It is also available in bulk for use with automatic dispensing equipment. Adhesive can be applied at leisure and when you are certain parts are aligned correctly and clamped, the adhesive can then be heat cured.
What can it bond?
Permabond ES558 is suitable for bonding a wide variety of materials including:
- Aluminium (particularly popular for heat exchanger tube sealing)
- Steel, copper and most other metals
- Tungsten carbide (ideal for wear tips, tooling etc.)
- Magnets, ferrites, ceramic materials
- Some plastics
- Composite materials
Feature:
- Excellent adhesive strength
- Excellent resistance to vibration
- Easy to use - no mixing required
- High shear and peel strength
- Good impact strength
- High temperature resistance
- Good resistance to chemicals
Product Name
Permabond ES558 1-Part Heat-Cure Epoxy, Cartridge and Starter Kit
Brief Description
Permabond ES558 is a single-part, heat-cure epoxy adhesive paste engineered for high-strength, durable bonding and sealing across a variety of materials, including metals, ceramics, and composites. This toughened adhesive flows like solder when heated, wicking into small gaps before curing to form a robust, impact-resistant bond.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding and sealing metal components.- Sealing heat exchanger tubes.- Replacing welding or brazing joints in manufacturing processes.- Bonding tungsten carbide for tools and machinery wear tips.- Applications requiring high temperature and chemical resistance.- Can withstand solder reflow processing, making it suitable for certain electronic applications.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Chemical Industry- Electrical Services or Products- Energy- Engineering Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- Government & Military- Industrial Supply- LED/Electronics- Marine- Medical Device/ Prosthetics- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Single-part epoxy formulation, eliminating the need for mixing.- Cures rapidly with heat (oven, infra-red, or induction heating).- Flows like solder when heated, allowing it to wick into small, pre-assembled joints.- Rubber-toughened for maximum impact resistance.- Exhibits high peel and shear strength.- Offers excellent resistance to vibration.- Provides high temperature resistance, capable of withstanding paint bake oven cycles and solder reflow.- Possesses good resistance to various chemicals.- Creates a 100% seal between components.- Ensures better stress distribution compared to traditional joining methods like welding or brazing.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Epoxy Resin.- Appearance: Silver-grey.- Viscosity: 100,000 - 300,000 mPa.s (paste).- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.5 mm.- Cure Speed: Approximately 60 minutes at 130°C or 45 minutes at 150°C (actual times vary with assembly size).- Shear Strength (Steel): 27-41 N/mm².- Hardness: 80 Shore D.- Operating Temperature Range: -40°C to +180°C.- Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents.
Surface Compatibility
- Aluminium (particularly effective for heat exchanger tube sealing).- Steel, copper, and most other metals.- Tungsten carbide.- Magnets and ferrites.- Ceramic materials.- Some plastics.- Composite materials.- Recommended surface preparation includes degreasing with solvents like acetone or isopropanol, and light abrasion for certain metals to remove oxide layers.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Loctite E-310 (Henkel) - a 1-part, heat-cure epoxy.- Loctite E-309 (Henkel) - a 1-part, heat-cure epoxy.- Permabond ES550 - a similar 1-part, heat-cure epoxy paste from the same manufacturer.- Other 1-part heat-cure epoxies with comparable performance characteristics for structural bonding.
Comparison Note
Permabond ES558 stands out as a single-part, heat-cure epoxy that streamlines production by eliminating the need for mixing and offering a safer alternative to welding or brazing. Its unique ability to flow like solder when heated, combined with a rubber-toughened formulation, ensures high impact and peel strength, providing superior stress distribution and an aesthetically pleasing finish for demanding industrial applications.
