Permabond MH196 is an anaerobic material designed for making “formed in situ” gaskets between metal surfaces. It is capable of replacing a wide range of conventional gaskets, thereby offering potential for reduced stock holdings. By allowing surface to surface contact, load transmission can be improved. As the product does not shrink, creep or relax after curing, no bolt re-tightening is required. It has excellent chemical and high temperature resistance or up to 200°C.
High temperature resistant anaerobic gasketmaker
- Toughened, slightly flexible - excellent impact and vibration resistance.
- High temperature resistance - to 200C.
- Seals between metal faces / flanges (up to 0.5mm gap) and bolt holes.
- Replaces conventional paper / cork / rubber or silicone gaskets.
- Makes all sizes / shapes of gasket with one product (no need to hold specific pre-cut gasket in stock).
- Will not deteriorate over time - no need to replace / service, no risk of loose particles damaging valves etc.
- Does not require tightening after "bedding-in" unlike conventional gaskets.
- Can be removed if necessary.
- Excellent resistance to water, chemicals and automotive fluids (fuel, oil, brake fluid, antifreeze etc.).
- Easy to apply, rapid cure speed with good instant pressure sealing ability.

Brief Description
Permabond MH196 is a medium strength, high viscosity, high temperature resistant anaerobic adhesive resin designed as a gasketmaker or flange sealant. It is primarily used for creating "formed in situ" gaskets between metal surfaces, effectively replacing a wide range of conventional pre-cut gaskets.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Making "formed in situ" gaskets between metal surfaces.- Replacing conventional pre-cut gaskets of various sizes.- As a dressing for conventional pre-cut gaskets.- Applications demanding high temperature resistance.- Sealing in automotive components.- Maintenance for cranes and heavy machinery.- Sealing in pumps, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic systems.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Automotive Service/Repair- General Manufacturing (for machinery, pumps, pneumatics, hydraulics assembly and maintenance)- Metal Fabrication (for creating gaskets between metal surfaces)- Engineering Services (for mechanical engineering and maintenance)- Industrial Supply- Distributers & Resellers- Transportation/ Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Provides an instant low pressure seal.- Capable of replacing all sizes of formed gaskets.- Offers good high pressure resistance, up to 5000 psi / 355 bar.- Exhibits high temperature resistance, withstanding temperatures from -55°C to +200°C.- Does not creep or shrink after curing.- Ensures uniform stress distribution, eliminating the need for re-torqueing.- The flexible cured polymer provides good vibration and shock resistance.- Thixotropic, non-drip property prevents migration of the sealant before and during cure.- Allows for metal-to-metal contact of flanges while filling surface irregularities.- Facilitates easy assembly and disassembly of components.- RoHS Compliant.- Features UV fluorescence for easy inspection.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Acrylic.- Appearance: Red.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 500,000 mPa.s (cP) at 2rpm; 100,000 mPa.s (cP) at 20rpm.- Specific Gravity: 1.1.- Maximum Gap Fill: 0.5mm.- Handling/Open Time: 15 Minutes.- Working Strength (at 23°C): 1-3 Hours.- Full Cure: 24 hours.- Operating Temperature Range: -55°C to +200°C.- Pressure Resistance: Up to 5000 psi / 355 bar.- Chemical Resistance: Good against engine oil, water/glycol, and petrol (with varying strength retention).
Surface Compatibility
- Primarily designed for use on metal surfaces.- Achieves best results on clean, dry, and grease-free surfaces, though it tolerates slight contamination.- Roughened surfaces (approximately 25μm) generally yield higher bond strengths.- Copper and its alloys can accelerate the cure speed.- Oxidized or passivated surfaces (e.g., stainless steel, zinc, aluminum) may reduce cure speed.- Not recommended for contact with oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or strong oxidizing materials.- Users should check compatibility with thermoplastics as the product may adversely affect some.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond HH190: An anaerobic paste adhesive that eliminates pre-cut gaskets, provides an instant pressure seal, forms a tough, durable seal for high pressure, and removes the need for bolt re-tightening.- Permabond LH197: An anaerobic liquid designed for formed-in-situ gaskets, noted for its high flexibility, making it suitable for dissimilar surfaces and non-ferrous metals.- Permabond A905 or ASC10: Activators that can be used to reduce cure time, especially on inactive surfaces like zinc, aluminum, and stainless steel.
Comparison Note
Permabond MH196 offers significant advantages over conventional pre-cut gaskets by providing a "formed in situ" seal that conforms precisely to flange irregularities. This allows for improved load transmission due to metal-to-metal contact and eliminates the need for re-torqueing, as the product does not shrink, creep, or relax after curing.
