Brief Description
Permabond TA440 is a two-component structural acrylic adhesive designed for high-strength bonding of various materials at room temperature. It offers excellent flexibility, impact, and peel resistance, making it suitable for demanding structural applications. This adhesive utilizes a "bead-on-bead" or "no-mix" application method, where the two components cure upon contact when assembled.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Structural bonding of metals, glass, wood, ferrites, ceramics, and rigid plastics.- Automotive exterior components.- Vehicle conversions and campervans.- Lifts, stairlifts, stairs, and walkways.- Sign bonding, point of sale, and shopfitting.- Bus, train, and tram interiors.- Magnet/ferrite bonding in electric motors.- Loudspeaker component bonding.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense (for certain structural bonding applications).- Automotive Service/Repair.- Cladding (as a structural adhesive alternative).- Construction/Building Services.- Fabrication (general bonding of diverse materials).- General Manufacturing.- LED/Electronics.- Metal Fabrication.- Plastic Fabrication.- Sign & Display.- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle.
Special and Unique Features
- Two-component, no-mix application (bead-on-bead method).- Rapid room-temperature cure, increasing daily output and reducing production costs.- High shear and peel strength.- Good impact strength.- Excellent durability, resisting tensile, peel, cleavage, and impact forces.- Resists stresses of differential thermal expansion when bonding dissimilar materials.- Good chemical resistance.- Can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods, such as paint baking and wave soldering processes, provided the joint is not unduly stressed.
Key Properties
- Chemical composition: Urethane methacrylate.- Color: Amber (Component A), Green (Component B), Mixed: Green.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 5,000-12,000 mPa.s (cP) for each component.- Ratio of use: 1:1.- Maximum gap fill: 0.5 mm (0.02 in).- Fixture time (zinc, no gap) @ 23°C: 15-30 seconds.- Handling time (zinc, no gap) @ 23°C: 60-90 seconds.- Working strength (zinc, no gap) @ 23°C: 30-60 minutes.- Full cure @ 23°C: 24 hours.- Shear strength (mild steel): 15-25 N/mm² (2200-3600 psi).- Peel strength: 45-65 N/25mm (10-14 PIW).- Tensile strength: 25 N/mm² (3600 psi).- Impact strength: 10-15 kJ/m².- Temperature range (cured adhesive): -55°C to 120°C (-65°F to 250°F).
Surface Compatibility
Permabond TA440 is suitable for bonding a wide variety of substrates including:- Metals (e.g., mild steel, zinc, aluminum, copper and its alloys).- Glass.- Wood.- Ferrites.- Ceramics.- Rigid plastics.Surfaces should be clean, dry, and grease-free before application. Light abrasion with emery cloth may benefit some metals like aluminum and copper to remove oxide layers.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond TA4605 Toughened Acrylic Adhesive.- Permabond TA4610 Toughened Acrylic Adhesive.- HARDLOC C-333-08 – 2K Acrylic Adhesive.- Bostik Born2Bond Structural Cyanoacrylate Adhesive.- Permabond TA4246 (aerospace approved, MMA based).- Permabond TA4590 (non-flammable, low odor, for metals).- Permabond TA452 (non-flammable, low odor, for steel).
Comparison Note
Permabond TA440 stands out for its balanced profile of high strength and excellent flexibility, making it ideal for structural applications that demand robust impact and peel resistance. Its unique "no-mix" application simplifies the bonding process and contributes to increased production efficiency due to its rapid room-temperature cure. This versatility, coupled with its ability to bond a wide array of dissimilar substrates while resisting differential thermal expansion, positions it as a highly adaptable adhesive solution for various industrial needs.
