Brief Description
Permabond TA4246 is a 2-part, no-mix, room temperature curing structural acrylic adhesive. It is engineered to form very high-strength structural bonds with excellent environmental durability and chemical resistance.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Replacing rivets or welding in various assemblies to achieve a more lightweight and durable bond.- Structural bonding of a wide variety of substrate materials.- Assemblies requiring high peel and impact strength.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- Aerospace/Defense- Automotive Service/Repair- Construction/Building Services- Fabrication- General Manufacturing- LED/Electronics- Marine- Medical Device/Prosthetics- Metal Fabrication- Plastic Fabrication- Sign & Display- Transportation/Specialty Vehicle
Special and Unique Features
- Two-part, no-mix application for ease of use.- Cures at room temperature, eliminating the need for heat curing equipment.- Achieves very high shear and peel strength.- Offers excellent impact resistance.- Provides good chemical resistance and environmental durability.- Can serve as a lightweight, durable alternative to mechanical fasteners like rivets or welding.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Methyl methacrylate.- Appearance: Amber liquid.- Viscosity @ 25°C: 15,000 - 35,000 mPa.s (cP).- Specific Gravity (resin): 1.0.- Fixture Time (aluminium) @23°C (no gap): 1-2 minutes.- Handling Time (aluminum) @23°C (no gap): 2-4 minutes.- Working Strength (aluminum) @23°C (no gap): 15-30 minutes.- Full Cure @23°C: 24 hours.- Shear Strength (Mild steel): 33-35 N/mm² (4800-5100 psi).- Peel Strength (aluminium): 6.00 - 7.20 kN/m (34.2 - 41.1 pli).- Temperature Resistance: Can withstand -40°C (-40°F) and higher temperatures for brief periods (e.g., paint baking, wave soldering).
Surface Compatibility
- Adheres to a wide variety of substrates including mild steel, aluminum, brass, nylon, PMMA, and galvanized steel.- Surfaces must be clean, dry, and grease-free prior to bonding.- Light abrasion with emery cloth is recommended for some metals like aluminum and copper alloys to remove oxide layers.- Not recommended for use in contact with strong oxidizing materials.- Users should check compatibility with thermoplastics as the product may affect some.
Known backups / known substitutes
While specific named backups are not provided in the search results, other high-performance structural acrylic adhesives or toughened epoxies with similar strength, flexibility, and environmental resistance characteristics would be considered substitutes. The product itself is often used as a substitute for mechanical fastening methods like riveting or welding.
Comparison Note
Permabond TA4246 offers a superior alternative to traditional fastening methods such as riveting or welding, providing a more lightweight, durable, and aesthetically pleasing assembly with excellent resistance to environmental factors and chemicals.
