Permabond 940 Cyanoacrylate Super Glue Instant Adhesive is a low odour, non-fogging, non-frosting alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate. It is also a thin, low-viscosity formula for tight-fitting bonds.
940 is a Medical Device Grade formula
The reduced odour improves worker comfort and safety. Unsightly fogging at the bondline is eliminated, which can otherwise be common with other cyanoacrylate adhesives, especially on hot and/or humid days. The elimination of fogging improves the professional finish of assembly jobs, and reduces rework and unacceptable finishes and apparences. The adhesive is very stable and will provide optimum performance for one year when refrigerated.
Product Name
Permabond 940 Instant Adhesive-Low Odor, Non-Frosting Non-Fogging Clear Thin Wicking
Brief Description
Permabond 940 is an advanced alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive engineered for rapid, strong, and aesthetically pleasing bonds. It is specifically formulated to be low odor, non-frosting (anti-bloom), and non-fogging, addressing common aesthetic and comfort concerns associated with traditional cyanoacrylate adhesives.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding a wide variety of substrates where a low odor and low bloom finish are critical.
- Ideal for applications involving dark plastics where maintaining a good aesthetic appearance is essential.
- Suitable for high-speed production lines due to its rapid curing properties.
- Used in applications such as wire tacking and tamper-proofing.
- General assembly requiring a clear, invisible bond.
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing
- Medical Device/ Prosthetics
- Plastic Fabrication
- Metal Fabrication
- Furniture
- Cabinet & Woodworking
- Sign & Display
- LED/Electronics
- Automotive Service/Repair
Special and Unique Features
- Low Odor: Significantly improves worker comfort and safety during application.
- Non-Frosting (Anti-Bloom): Eliminates the unsightly white residue often seen with other cyanoacrylate adhesives, ensuring a clean aesthetic appearance.
- Non-Fogging: Prevents the formation of hazy residue adjacent to bond lines, particularly beneficial in hot and humid conditions.
- Ease of Use: Requires no mixing or heat cure, simplifying the bonding process.
- 100% Reactive: Contains no solvents, making it a pure adhesive.
- Thin Wicking: Low viscosity allows it to penetrate tight-fitting joints effectively.
- Medical Device Grade: Formulated to meet the requirements for medical device applications.
Key Properties
- Chemical Composition: Alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate.
- Color: Clear.
- Cure System: Room temperature, moisture-initiated polymerization.
- Cure Time: Achieves handling strength in a few seconds; full strength typically within 24 hours.
- Viscosity: Low, ranging from 5 to 10 cP (thin wicking).
- Maximum Gap Fill: Up to 0.05 mm (0.002 inches).
- Temperature Resistance: Can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods, such as during paint baking and wave soldering processes.
- Specific Gravity: 1.09 @ 23.9 °C.
- Dielectric Strength: 25 kV/mm.
- Flash Point: 80 to 93 °C.
Surface Compatibility
Permabond 940 bonds effectively to a wide range of materials, including:
- Plastics
- Ceramics
- Composites
- Metals (e.g., aluminum, copper, mild steel)
- Wood
- Leather
- Rubber
For difficult or porous surfaces, the use of a Permabond activator is recommended. When bonding polyolefin plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE, or silicone, priming with Permabond Polyolefin Primer (POP) is advised.
Known backups / known substitutes
- Permabond 941: Similar to 940 but with a slightly higher viscosity and greater gap-filling capability.
- Permabond 943: Offers higher viscosity and gap-filling ability than both 940 and 941.
- Permabond 947: The highest viscosity in the Permabond 94X series, providing the largest gap-filling abilities.
- Loctite 416™ Super Bonder® Instant Adhesive: A comparable general-purpose instant adhesive.
- Loctite 414™ Super Bonder® Instant Adhesive: Another general-purpose instant adhesive.
- Permabond 731, 735, 737: Toughened cyanoacrylates designed for improved impact and peel resistance, offering more flexibility.
- Permabond 825: A heat-resistant cyanoacrylate adhesive.
- Permabond 910: The original 100% methyl cyanoacrylate adhesive.
Comparison Note
Permabond 940 distinguishes itself within the cyanoacrylate adhesive market by effectively mitigating the common drawbacks of traditional instant glues, namely strong odors, frosting (blooming), and fogging. Its alkoxyethyl formulation ensures a low-odor environment, enhancing worker comfort and compliance. The non-frosting and non-fogging characteristics are particularly valuable for applications requiring a pristine aesthetic finish, especially on dark or transparent materials where visual clarity is paramount. While other Permabond cyanoacrylates offer specialized properties like enhanced impact resistance (e.g., 737) or higher temperature performance (e.g., 825), the 940 series prioritizes a clean, virtually invisible bond without compromising on rapid cure speed and strong adhesion to diverse substrates.
