Product Name
Maven EAF405 Fast Set 5 Minute Black Epoxy - Toughened 5-minute Set Epoxy Adhesive
Brief Description
Maven EAF405 is a two-component, fast-setting (5-minute working time), toughened black epoxy adhesive. It offers excellent strength and toughness, designed for multipurpose bonding applications at room temperature. Its toughened formulation provides enhanced impact resistance, peel strength, and resistance to thermal cycling, making it less brittle than conventional epoxies.
Popular Applications & Uses
- Bonding various metals including steel (ferrous and stainless) and aluminum- Adhering to a wide range of plastics, composites (fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber), glass, wood, and ceramics- General assembly and construction tasks- Repairs and maintenance in industrial, automotive, and household settings- Filling gaps and voids due to its medium viscosity and non-shrinking properties- Fast setting impregnating resin for reinforcing and field repairs with fiberglass, Kevlar, and carbon fiber- Rapid prototyping through fast casting of small to medium parts- Waterproofing porous substrates such as wood, textiles, masonry, and stone- Structural bonding in shock-critical applications- Woodworking joints, plastic repairs, modeling, and electronics assembly
Industries that Commonly Use It
- General Manufacturing: For assembly and bonding of diverse materials- Automotive Service/Repair: For vehicle repairs and component bonding- Construction/Building Services: For bonding concrete, masonry, wood, and general building applications- Metal Fabrication: Due to its excellent adhesion to metals- Plastic Fabrication: For bonding various plastic types, often with surface pre-treatment- Marine: For repairs and bonding in marine environments- Aerospace/Defense: For structural bonding of alloys and composites where toughened epoxies are required- Artist, Artisan & Prosumer: For crafts, DIY projects, modeling, and jewelry making- Cabinet & Woodworking: For wood bonding, filling cracks, and joinery- Mold Making/Casting: As a fast casting resin- LED/Electronics: For electronic component assembly and protection- Engineering Services: For prototyping and specialized bonding solutions- Distributers & Resellers / Industrial Supply: As a product offered for various industrial and professional needs
Special and Unique Features
- Toughened Formula: Provides superior peel and shear strength, impact resistance, and flexibility, reducing brittleness and improving resistance to temperature cycles and CTE mismatch- Fast Set Time: Offers a 5-minute working time for quick assembly and repairs- Black Color: Ideal for applications requiring a dark finish or blending with black substrates- Multipurpose Adhesive: Bonds a wide variety of dissimilar materials with excellent strength- Electrically Insulating: Suitable for certain electrical applications- Medium Viscosity: Allows for good flow and gap filling without excessive runniness- Excellent Environmental Resistance: Withstands various environmental conditions- Gap-Filling Capabilities: Effectively fills small gaps and voids- Non-Shrinking: 100% reactive with no solvents, ensuring no shrinkage upon curing- Water and Weather Resistant: Provides durable bonds in challenging conditions- High-Temperature Durability: Can withstand temperatures up to 300°F (149°C) for similar products- Easy 1:1 Mix Ratio: Simplifies preparation and application
Key Properties
- Type: Two-component, room temperature curing epoxy adhesive- Color: Black- Working Time: Approximately 5 minutes- Fixture Time: 10-15 minutes (functional strength in 15 minutes to 1 hour)- Full Cure: 24-48 hours- Viscosity: Medium (15,000 to 30,000 cps for EAF405)- Mix Ratio: 1:1 by volume- Shear Strength: Excellent, high bond strength (e.g., up to 2,500 psi for similar products)- Peel Strength: High, enhanced by toughening- Impact Resistance: High, due to toughened formulation- Temperature Resistance: Good environmental performance, up to 300°F (149°C) for similar products- Chemical Resistance: Superior resistance to chemicals, moisture, and environmental factors- Electrical Properties: Electrically insulating- Gap Filling: Excellent- Shrinkage: None (100% reactive, no solvents)
Surface Compatibility
- Metals: Steel (ferrous and stainless), Aluminum- Plastics: Many types, including ABS, Polypropylene (PP), High and Low-Density Polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE), and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) (with proper surface pre-treatment for some)- Composites: Fiberglass, Kevlar, Carbon Fiber- Construction Materials: Concrete, Masonry, Wood- Glass- Ceramics- Other: 3D printed parts, Fabric, Rubber, Thermoset resins (Epoxy, Polyester, Polyurethanes)- Note: Poor bonds to some thermoplastics like ABS, PVC, Polyethylene, and Acrylic without proper surface treatment
Known backups / known substitutes
- 3M DP405, 3M DP405NS, 3M 405 pails- MAX 5MIN A/B (a two-part toughened epoxy/polymercaptan resin system)- Devcon® 5 Minute® Epoxy- Permatex® 5 Minute Epoxy- System Three Quick Cure-5 Black- Other fast-curing adhesives such as Cyanoacrylates (CA glue), especially when combined with fillers like baking soda for gap filling- Polyester resin or Vinyl ester resin (often cheaper, but with different mechanical properties and application suitability, particularly for marine/fiberglass)- Polyurethane adhesives (offer high strength and heat resistance, but may shrink or foam during cure)- Structural Acrylic (MMA) adhesives- Silicone adhesives (known for flexibility and waterproofing, but different strength profiles)- For casting or filling large voids where mechanical properties are less critical, alternatives like Plaster of Paris or concrete can be considered
Comparison Note
Maven EAF405 stands out as a toughened 5-minute black epoxy, offering a critical balance between rapid curing and enhanced durability. Unlike standard brittle epoxies, its toughened formulation provides superior resistance to impact, peel forces, and thermal cycling, making it ideal for demanding applications involving dissimilar materials or environments with temperature fluctuations. Its fast set time allows for quick assembly and repairs, while the black pigmentation is advantageous for applications requiring a dark, discreet finish or blending with black substrates. This product is a robust choice for professionals and DIY users seeking a strong, reliable, and quick-setting adhesive with improved resilience.
